The Reading Room: UNQUESTIONING LOYALTY TO PASTORAL LEADERSHIP THE MARK OF A CULT
UNQUESTIONING LOYALTY TO PASTORAL LEADERSHIP THE MARK OF A CULT By David Cloud For church leaders to demand unquestioning loyalty is a perversion of biblical truth and is the mark of a cult. The Bible gives authority to pastors and elders (Heb. 13:7, 17), but that authority is not unlimited or unquestionable. Those who demand blind obedience from their [...]

      No More Mortgage Lender Loyalty
No More Mortgage Lender LoyaltyBy: Michael SteriosThere once was a time when loyalty was rewarded. However times have changed and loyalty to your mortgage lender no longer seems important. These days the average mortgage lender seems obsessed with attracting new business while few seem interested in providing their existing customers with incentives to remain with them.New customers are often drawn into taking out financial products from their mortgage lender because of various incentives that are offered to attract new business. The incentives on offer can include discounts on application fees, discounted interest rates, free valuations, cash backs, and even free gifts. However, it seems that once the relationship between the lender and the customers moves beyond the honeymoon stage there

      Lagniappe Builds Loyalty
On a recent trip, we made a detour to Philadelphia (about 50 miles out of the way) to have dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant. This restaurant is in the heart of Philadelphia's Chinatown (near the convention center). The restaurant has a wonderful ginger garlic sauce they bring to the table for appetizers. We just love it and always request more. This restaurant really gets the concept of lagniappe. Lagniappe is a familiar term in New Orleans and it refers to a small extra given to the customer for free (e.g. an extra beignet if you buy a dozen). I have visited this restaurant on just about every trip to Philadelphia and frequently go out of my way when returning home on Interstate 95. They go out of their way to show guests they are appreciated. On one visit, I brought my par

      Merit & Loyalty
It has been awhile since I wrote one of these essays, but sometimes, situations in life inspire me to contemplate certain things. And somehow, these two qualities have stuck out for me that, on the surface, may seem incompatible. However, one can see a connection when looking deeper.Merit and loyalty are both principles, both that say much about a human being's character. But, they represent two distinct sides of the self.Merit is often described as the state of deserving, whether good or bad. It is almost best determined by what one feels they've earned from the work they've done. It is also a very subjective state, as it is often debatable what someone truly merits or whether they've actually done the work to earn what they think they deserve. Then, there's loyalty, which is often the sta

      Loyalty
"Loyalty cannot be blueprinted. It cannot be produced on an assembly line. In fact, it cannot be manufactured at all, for its origin is the human heart-the center of self-respect and human dignity. It is a force which leaps into being only when conditions are exactly right for it-and it is a force very sensitive to betrayal". -Maurice R. Franks If somebody will ask you how will you define loyalty, what will be your answer? If you will be ask how loyal are you to your self? To your friend? To your family? To your work? To your country? What will be your answer? Will you be able to say directly that your are 100 percent loyal to the above mentioned? Are you as loyal as the dog to his master? Is Carville Right to Place Loyalty First?
I agree with Mike Lux's conclusion that James Carville is wrong to describe loyalty as a "cardinal virtue", but I would take Lux's argument one step further.  Carville's focus on loyalty first is misplaced and reminds me of what is wrong with the current presidential administration. Carville claims that "[n]owhere in the world is loyalty so little revered and tittle-tattle so greatly venerated as in as in Washington."  Actually, loyalty has had a pretty good run for the last seven years in Washington, although the results have not been so good. The Bush administration has made loyalty the coin of the realm, as another former Clinton insider has observed.  Bush has surrounded himself with yes men and women–the slogan "you're either with us, or you're against us" doesn't only apply

      LOYALTY and DISLOYALTY
LOYALTY and DISLOYALTY Dag Heward-Mills Loyalty is one of the Biblical principles that are rarely been taught or often neglected in churches and businesses. Ironically, loyalty takes a major part for the growth and success of any organization especially the church and every person especially a leader must understand this great principle or shall we say acquire this character. In view of that, all of us should look closely on the topic of Loyalty (and Disloyalty as well). Besides, it is those that are loyal (faithful, good stewards) that are given the authority to govern and be rewarded in the end: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Matthew 25:21 TNIV

Due to a lot of confusion out there in regards to the role of a Jew in exile, there is a need to be specific about what should otherwise be considered obvious. An American Jew is and should be loyal to America first before the State of Israel; the same goes from each Jew of whichever particular nation he lives in. As the Talmud phrases it: "The Law of the Land (you dwell in) is the Law." If a Jew finds this concept confusing he should move to Israel. Because God dispersed his people throughout the world to spread His Glory, not to desecrate it by disloyalty to their homeland or any other sinful pursuits. A truly religious American Jew should place America before Israel if he wants to remain truly religious.A Jew's connection to the people of Israel and the Holy Land, however, is connected

The England U21 right-back has had a tough time at club level this season, making only three starts for Arsenal so far, none of which have been in the Premiership. Hoyte ended last season as the club’s second-choice right-back and despite Emmanuel Eboue’s conversion to the right side of midfield has remained nothing more than a backup after to the signing of French defender Bacary Sagna who, somewhat surprisingly, has been nothing short of outstanding since his arrival from Auxerre. Despite Hoyte’s difficult situation, the English defender has shown great maturity by indicating that he is prepared to stay and fight for his position at Arsenal rather than moving to a smaller Premiership club that would surely guarantee first-team football. “Of course I want to stay at the club and fight. We must offer more than just service. We need to maintain a broad product line that can be configured to the specific needs of a customer. It is important to know that an average product tailored to a customers very specific need is often better than the more advanced, but inflexible, product. Many times organizations are not obsessed by the leading edge; rather they embrace solid, tested products that can be tailored to fit their needs like a glove. It is important for us to produce unmatched value for our customers who do not necessarily want the very latest product - just the best result and help in obtaining it.1. It is necessary to understand the importance of empowerment and the critical role of individual initiative. It can be summed up in a one-word motto = THINK. How Ask.com Could Gain Webmaster Loyalty
I recently did an experiment where I used Ask.com as my main search engine. While the Ask.com SERPs have the best organization of the major search engines, the actual organic search results from Ask.com are not good. Because of the less-than-ideal organic search results, webmasters and SEOs don’t take Ask.com seriously. Ask.com doesn’t bring traffic so SEOs don’t even mention it when talking about major search engines. This is bad for Ask.com. Search engines need the active support of webmasters. Webmasters give search engines free coverage and links. Links are (obviously) good for traffic. For example, Yahoo.com pages frequently come up in the Google SERPs. One way that Ask.com could start getting positive coverage and links from webmasters and SEOs is to offer genuinely useful webmaster tools. If it weren’t for Yahoo’s SiteExplorer tools I would rarely ever visit Yahoo.com. If it weren’t for MSN Live’s ip: and linkfromdomain: queries

Next was the resignation of Attorney General Gonzales.   CNN had a long bit about how "lonely" the president must be feeling with all of this resignations (Karl Rove being the other).   Not one looked at the obvious political motivations behind the resignations (neither Rove nor Gonzales are doing the party any good just over a year before an election), and none even considered Bush might have known about them in advance.  Can they be this stupid? The race was scheduled to run Sunday, Aug. 19, but finally got under way Tuesday.“No other sports fans in the world are like NASCAR fans,” speedway President Roger Curtis said. “They battled postponements, long, cold days in the rain and mud. They even battled fog. Other sports fans would have thrown in the towels and umbrellas long before Tuesday.”3M Performance 400 race winner Kurt Busch agreed. “For all the fans to be here on a Tuesday — I’m sure some of them might not have a job when they show up for work tomorrow morning,” Busch said. “There’s some diehard fans in this area … The heart that NASCAR fans have and their drive to be out here and give up a

      Cigarette Butts for Loyalty
[Note- this entry is about a month old now due to lack of internet connection at new flat]I look at the room around me, the cigarette butts in a glass of only three quarters empty Jack Daniels and coke, the empty bottles of vodka, the clothing and makeup strewn in between empty wine glasses. The crumpled packets of Marlboro lights; the crate of empty beer bottles. I walk into my room. The bed’s a mess, the light’s still on from when I passed out at five am, Friends is frozen on the screen of my laptop and a large glass of water is sitting untouched beside the bed. I remember flashes of the night. A tall black guy approaching me at the crowded bar of some dimly lit club or other. His arm around my waist, deep voice whispering in my ear. “Come on baby, come with me, you’re dynamite.” I didn’t even pause to think “who even says that?”- I was past far too drunk and into totally out of my depth. I was in the sort of state where leaving with a guy isn’t something you

      The 3 C’s of Loyalty
Before you start a customer loyalty program, or if you are evaluating your existing program, consider the 3 C’s of Loyalty. These are essential components to any loyalty marketing program and can provide you a structure to build from.Capture: The foundation of a good customer loyalty program is collecting customer data by offering your customers a reason to give it to you. A customer rewards program gives your customers a reason to complete a form that provides you all the relevant data and contact information to effectively manage a loyalty marketing program. If you are going to ask customers to enroll in your program, it is suggested to train your wait staff to present the program and ask for them to complete the form PRIOR to them receiving their meal and offer them immediate gratification for enrolling. One idea is to offer a free soft drink if they enroll at that time. Partner with you soda provider to give you free product to absorb your cost in exchange for putting their l

Brand loyalty in the absence of television
The fact that brand loyalty begins by the age of two, with children recognizing brand logos by the age of three is old news. In fact, the research was published in the early 90's. It is a fact commonly exploited by early reading programs. I used it in my preschool classroom under the innocuous name of "environmental print." We spent reading time cutting out logos and gluing them in little books so my young charges could learn the letter "M" from a McDonald's sign, "W" from WalMart and "C" from Coca Cola.I never really viewed these activities as preparing the children to become consumers in the market. In fact, I viewed it more as exploiting the fact that they already were consumers to a higher end.My children do not watch very much television and virtually no advertisements. That does not make them less aware of the brands around them, and even my two year old recognizes her favorite haunts by the logos out front. But they do not seem to have the fierce loyalty I remember as a

      Family Loyalty (Part 1)
When I was a child, my father taught us (I have two siblings) that family loyalty was the most important trait there is. He was the youngest of four brothers and he idolized his older brothers. Growing up, I never tired of hearing stories about how my dad's brothers were wonderful athletes, how well they did in school, how popular they were, how many offices they held and so on and so forth. My dad has been dead for 18 years so it is impossible for me to ask him when he stopped--idolizing them, that is. What I do know is that he and his eldest brother were the only ones to attend college. After college, my uncle moved to North Carolina, married someone outside of his family's faith, and rarely returned home. It wasn't because of my grandparents' attitude toward his wife; they were very accepting. All these years later, I wonder why my uncle abandoned his family. My dad's second oldest brother was captured in World War II and may have been a hero but wasn't very successful once he

The pseudo-religious theme from “I Tried” carries over to “Order My Steps (Dear Lord)” with a reading of a Bible verse (Jeremiah 10: 23-24, if you want to be specific) followed by excessive condemnation over people not praying and repenting enough. I initially thought it was packed with real heart, but the three violence-praising tracks that round out the record diminish the gospel wannabe’s authenticity.
