The host for this month of the Daring Baker's Challenge is Morven and the challenge for the month of March was to bake a Perfect Party Cake by Dorie Greenspan .It is a white cake flavoured with lemon, and I love anything lemony and followed the recipe..though there was a choice to experiment.The filling was a lemon-buttercream filling that was spread on top of the raspberry preserves layer.The frosting was buttercream to which blueberry preserves were added. These were then sprinkled with Chocolate strands by my toddler of course who wanted to help. Nothing sexy here just the 2005 Roulot Bourgogne Blanc. First day this wine was all texture and a little bit of baby fat flavors. Last night though the minerality seeped in and filled out the mid-palate and this had crunch, salinity and a long finish. Really a great effort and something that will last probaly 3-5 years in the cellar without pre-moxing. A lovely drink and perfect in the rare instances I drink white Burgundy out of my own cellar. I finally got a chance to watch the movie Once. I had been waiting for it to come out on DVD for so long! I loved it. Here's the story line. There is a struggling busker with some great songs who fixes vacuum cleaners. He meets a girl. She is a pianist without a piano. She encourages him to record his songs. They write songs together and fall for each other but nothing happens between them physically - unlike every other Hollywood movie. Here is a little taste. There are so many great songs in the movie, NOT JUST the one that won the Oscar for Best Song - Falling Slowly. I loved "If You Want Me" and "When Your Mind's Made Up." I'm thinking of buying the soundtrack.The only caveat I have in recommending the movie is the frequent use of the f word. Other than that, I recommend it to anyone.

Though I'm now in the second month of February and entering March in a few days' time, it is not easy to part with the wonderful memories we had in Hawaii. It was such a lovely place to have a family vacation - relaxed ambience, friendly locals, great weather, awesome beaches and rich culture. The above shows Waikiki beach at Marriott Waikiki's end - how I miss these beautiful blue skies. For Valentine's Day, my husband brought home these beautiful, simple flowers.For the past several days, they have been sitting up on a shelf separating my kitchen from the living room. Only today, while on the phone, did my eyes travel up the back side of the flowers. I stopped talking, mid-sentence.What the heck is that?Someone please tell me that little bugs did not sprout out of those. I think the flowers are getting pitched today. I have no idea want those things are, but I can tell you that I find them to be completely creepy. I get the chills just looking at those pictures.Maybe next year my husband will get Valentine's Day right. (and if you read that link from last year, read the follow up one too.)
