This from the Herald-Leader:LOUISVILLE, Ky. --A federal judge turned away a challenge to Louisville's student assignment plan for the coming school year, saying it was brought too soon because no one has been affected by it yet.U.S. District Judge John Heyburn said on Tuesday that without having anyone affected by the plan, there's no way to know whether it violates the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling last summer barring race in assigning individual students to schools."We're much better off deciding this case not as a hypothetical," Heyburn said.Heyburn's decision came after attorney Teddy Gordon challenged Jefferson County's interim assignment plan. Gordon, who brought the case that resulted in the Supreme Court decision, said the interim plan illegally uses race to draw district lines for s

Rick Pitino spent the better part of three days breaking down videotape of teams trying in vain to stop No. 17 Notre Dame.

On Oct. 14 the Times of London Magazine ran a quote from Dr James Watson, who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for discovering the double-helix structure of DNA. In the article, the prominent scientist said he was "inherently gloomy" about Africa because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - whereas all the testing says not really." He went on to say in the article that, while he hoped everyone was equal, "people who have to deal with black employees find this not true." He wrote in his book Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life in Science, “there is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so.” His remarks ignited international furor.Watson was scheduled to appear next month in Louisville. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Steve Kragthorpe isn’t dwelling on a blown call by officials in last week’s 21-17 loss to Connecticut. The Courier-Journal reports: Case filed against Jefferson district A Louisville teacher is suing Jefferson County Public Schools, saying the district's practice of dispersing black teachers among its schools amounts to discrimination. Laukhuf Elementary teacher Lorraine D. Hill filed suit yesterday in U.S. District Court in Louisville, saying she was denied interviews and a transfer to Cane Run or Wellington elementary schools that were closer to her home because they already had too many black teachers. She is contesting the district's use of the so-called "Singleton Ratio," named after a 1960s desegregation case. The ratio requires that the percentage of black teachers within a school remain within 5 percentage points of the overall average for elementary, middle or high schools. In Jefferson County, that means holding most schools' percentage of black teachers between 6.8 and 21.9 percent, depending on the grade level. Nearly 15 percent of Jefferson County Public Schools' 6,168

Matthew Hardesty is a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Louisville, KY -->The Louisville Courier-Journal, usually critical (if not hostile) to the Catholic Church, redeemed itself somewhat with a recent article on seminarians in the Archdiocese of Louisville, KY. The title was interesting: "Few Hear Call to Priesthood in Archdiocese." Apparently, God and the Editor-in-Chief are pretty tight, so much so that God gave him a list of every person in the archdiocese who He has called to the priesthood. Pretty amazing. Personally, I would have went with, "Seminarians Reppin in Archdiocese"....but that's just me.Of course, Peter Smith, the author of the article, couldn't help but share his theological wisdom with us either. The parenthetical statement in the following quote is his: "Louisville's problems are echoed nationwide, with the United States seeing a 30 percent drop in priests since 1965. (Despite efforts by some activists, the church has remained committed to an all-male, celibat

LOUISVILLE --The University of Louisville yesterday announced a $2.5 billion expansion of its downtown Health Science Center over the next two decades. The expansion will create 2,200 jobs and 3.2 million square feet of construction, including research labs and parking garages, officials from the university, city and state said. They billed it as the largest economic development project in the city's history."Our goal is to recruit and incubate new business," University of Louisville President James Ramsey said.Plans for expanding the 30-block campus on the east side of Louisville's downtown include building six combined lab and office buildings in addition to research facilities and technology-enabled labs. In the following press release U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky announced that a federal grand jury in Louisville returned an indictment against Edward “Ted” House, of Louisville, Kentucky; Nathan Frisbie, of Louisville, Kentucky; Khaliad Raheem, a/k/a Dwayne Cross, of Louisville, Kentucky; and Jerry Crenshaw, of Louisville, Kentucky, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. The Indictment alleges that between January 1, 2000, and May 30, 2003, House, Frisbie, Raheem, and Crenshaw conspired with one another to defraud two residential mortgage lenders. The indictment identifies 24 separate fraudulent loan transactions, totaling approximately $1.5 million, in which the named defendants participated. The defendants defrauded the mortgage lenders through various means. Generally, they provided the lenders with false borrower background information in order to fraudulently induce the funding of individual loans. The defendants would pro
Yesterday, Martin Cothran of the Family Foundation wrote a brief celebration on the Supreme Court decision in Meredith on his blog vere loqui. It is a ruling that has many historical overtones that must be understood. Since the issue hit me in my wheelhouse, I thought a response might be in order.Cothran implies that those who think diversity is a good thing...(actually he says it better than that)...He says those who "sacrificed children to the idols of egalitarianism and diversity" are the modern descendants of the Canaanite god, Moloch. Well, this sounds really bad. I believe there is strength in diversity, so I wonder... Have I just been offended?I don't actually know. I'll have to look up Moloch first...to find out if he was particularly nasty or something. But if I've been sacrificing little children to some Canaanite god and didn't even know it...I'm gonna be hacked off.Martin is correct to point out that school districts will find other means to promote diversity.Today

Menzies replaced Reggie Theus, another former assistant to Pitino at Louisville, who left to coach more…
Parents of autistic children shared their joy and tears last night in a panel discussion as part of the first day of the eighth annual Autism Institute at the Galt House. The discussion, attended by about 45 people, was held as part of a series of events designed for educators, psychologists, family members and those who work with autism. It was a chance for parents to share ideas and help each other, said Rebecca Grau, interim director of the Kentucky Autism Training Center. Parents helped reassure others that despite the challenges, autism can be handled. "My son has autism, but autism doesn't have him," said one mother. ...Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States, and affects an estimated one out of every 150 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
