I feel terrible for the parents in Louisiana who want their children to receive an adequate education and realize that science is an important part of such an education. After Gov. Bobby Jindal ignored those calling for a veto and signed the Louisiana Science Education Act into law, it is going to be increasingly difficult for Louisiana's children to receive the education they deserve. If you have
Sunday, July 06, 2008 On July 2, 2008, Governor Bobby Jindal signed Senate Bill 51 into law. SB 51 allows all law-abiding employees, invitees, and customers to keep firearms locked in their vehicles while parked on publicly accessible parking lots, unless state or federal law already prohibits the possession of firearms on the premises, or the vehicle in question is company-owned or leased. I heard a u-haul moving a family next door to me yesterday, and I wasn't looking forward to it, because you never know what type of people your new neighbors will turn out to be.They could end up being enemies or friends for a lifetime, it’s just the luck of the draw, and whenever my cards were dealt, I was probably day-dreaming about something else, because I don't remember the occasion. In addition the image above is not a picture of my new neighbors, although the man may resemble the father; I didn’t meet the rest of the clan. I would have taken a picture of the Dad moving his furniture out of the U-haul when he yelled, “Hey what do you do?” Although, I just said; “ I ‘m a photojournalist at the local paper” (because I was taking pictures of my cat Sim

An article from AP via the Seattle Times: New ethics rules touted by Gov. Bobby Jindal as a hallmark of his young administration actually make it harder to prove violations, a government watchdog group said Wednesday.Lawmakers approved Jindal's legislation during the first of two special sessions he called soon after taking office in January. Jindal repeatedly decried Louisiana's corrupt image during his election campaign. The problem, according to the nonpartisan Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana, is in the wording of one bill: While existing law requires "reliable and substantial" evidence of wrongdoing in an ethics case, the bill that takes effect Aug. 15 requires a higher, "clear and convincing" standard in ethics cases. The change will require the gathering of more evidence a
At least we finished ahead of West Virginia: Louisiana’s legal climate is ranked as the second worst in the country, according to Lawsuit Climate 2008: Ranking the States, the annual assessment of state liability systems conducted by Harris Interactive, a leading national market research firm, and released today by the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR). Louisiana ranked 49th out of 50 states in the study, down one spot from the previous year. In addition, New Orleans/Orleans Parish was named among the ten least fair and reasonable court systems in the country.Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said the state needs to “take a comprehensive look at fixing the broken lawsuit system,” pointing out that Louisiana has languished near the bottom of

The Parable of the Lost Sheep is seemingly lost on some folk in Louisiana. They'd rather the lost sheep be fried in oil than be let back into the fold. The Good Shepherd is more concerned for the lost sheep, but if you've just tightened your belt a couple of notches too much, the message might get blurred in the subsequent fainting fit. The State of Louisiana is seeking to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that death "is not cruel and unusual punishment for the rape of a child" and thus doesn't violate the 8th Amendment. This comes on the day that the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the lethal three-drug cocktail used in most U.S. executions during the past 30 years. No matter that the stuff takes a time to wend its way through the veins. I suppose these judges describe themsel

In 2006, Roy Roberts pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder after a stabbing attack on the teenage daughters of his girlfriend. Now, Roberst has signed a plea deal which is said to require that he spend the rest of his life in prison. State District Judge Tony Marabella says the plea agreement (exchanged for a death sentence) prohibits Roberts from ever applying for parole, a commutation of his sentence, or a pardon from a governor. In addition, Roberts agreed to never try to make any money by selling books or profit from the case. See full story here.EDITOR: While I cannot speak with expert knowledge of the laws of the State of Louisiana, it seems there are some things worth exploring in this case. Ascension Parish (French: Paroisse de l'Ascension) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is one of the fastest growing parishes in the state. Its populaton is estimated to be 20,000 to 30,000 residents greater than the 2000 census. One of the major reasons for parish growth is the number of families wanting to move their children from the East Baton Rouge Parish public schools to the higher-performing Ascension public school system. For a time, Hurricane Katrina also brought in new residents from sur

The chairman of Louisiana's House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Cedric Richmond has announced that his committee will hold hearings on what is known as the "Angola Three" case and he is calling on Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) to pardon the men involved. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich, the chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, has also recently met with two of the three who remain in prison. The men - Robert King, Herman "Hooks" Wallace and Albert Woodfox - say they are victims of cruel and unusual punishment because of the time they spent in solitary confinement. A lawsuit is also pending in federal court. Wallace and Woodfox also say they were wrongfully convicted in a guard's death. King's conviction for killing another inmate was overturned, and he was released in 2001 after 29 years in solit

This is quite a good writen article about where priorities lay when it comes to domestic issues and those who simply want to faten their wallets and brush off the issues which matter to most Americans;Once again, the President asked Congress for billions of dollars in war funding for a tragic war in Iraq, while vetoing important domestic priorities like Labor-HHS appropriations and health care for 10 million of our nation's children! This is yet another example of President Bush's insensitive priorities: tax cuts for the rich and billions spent on his oil war, while right here in The United States, he denies health coverage to millions of poor children! It is no wonder that his approval ratings have dipped below 30 percent! For the cost of less than 40 days in Iraq, we could have provided health care coverage to 10 million children for an entire year! It is simply mind blowing that while the President continues to spend over $10 billion per month in Iraq, and over $600 billion on the

In a crowded field of 12 candidates, Bobby Jindal emerged with a majority of the vote for Louisiana governor, avoiding a runoff election that would have been mandatory under Louisiana’s rules that a candidate must receive a majority (as opposed to a plurality) of the votes to take the office. The election is notable because Jindal is of Indian descent, is only 36 years old, is a racial minority Republican, is the state’s first non-white governor since Reconstruction, and– since he’s not black – he was smart enough to win and may just be smart enough to do the job.Earlier in the week, Nobel Prize-winning DNA scientist James Watson reportedly told The Times of London that he is “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “All our social policies are based on the
A Republican has won the governorship in the state of Louisiana. U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal won the election to replace the incompetent Gov. Kathleen Blanco who was not running for re-election. While the main stream media tried to pin the lack of preparedness to help after hurricane Katrina, it was Kathleen Blanco who showed the real lack of leadership and preparedness. Governor-elect Jindal’s story seems to be an inspiring one.
U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal became the nation’s youngest governor and the first nonwhite to hold post in Louisiana since Reconstruction when he carried more than half the vote to defeat 11 opponents.
Jindal, the Republican 36-year-old son of Indian immigrants, had 53 percent with 625,036 votes with about 92 percent of the vote tallied. It was more than enough to win Saturday’s election outright and avoid a Nov. 17 runoff.

On the heels of the near win in Massachusetts' 5th congressional district, Republicans are putting the head on in Louisiana. In the October 20th (Saturday) open Gubernatorial primary, Republican Bobby Jindal can win outright, and become the next Governor, if he can get 50% of the vote. His current double digit lead suggests that he might be able to.If Jindal does win (by reaching 50%), he will capture the Governorship of an important swing state and reduce the majority of the Democrats from 29-21 to 28-22. This could aid in the GOP winning back majority status over the next 4 years.Perhaps more significantly, (when combined with the narrow defeat in Mass. 5) it will signal that the democratic wave is over.If Jindal wins, but fails to reach 50%, he will be forced into a runoff with the person who finishes 2nd.

Hardbeatnews, NEW ORLEAN, Louisiana, Mon. Oct. 1, 2007: The husband of an elected Louisiana representative has been arrested and charged by the federal government for hiring five “illegal” Trinidadian migrants.
First the story of the Jena 6 from Wade Goodman at NPR:All Things Considered, July 30, 2007 audio: As at hundreds of other high schools across America, black and white students at Jena High School in Jena, La., rarely sit together. The white students gather under a big shade tree in the courtyard, while black students congregate near the auditorium. But last year, a few days into the first semester, a new student, a freshman African American, asked the principal at an assembly, if he, too, could sit under the tree. He was told he could sit anywhere he liked.Three white boys on the rodeo team apparently disagreed. The next morning, there were three nooses hanging from the shade tree in the courtyard.Anthony Jackson is one of two black teachers at Jena High School. He laughs ruefully, as he recalls watching the nooses swaying in the tree."I jokingly said to another teacher, 'One's for you, one's for me. Who's the other one for?'"Many in Jena's black community wanted the three white

From January 2008, Wal-Mart has declared they will no longer buy and sell cypress mulch that's been produced in the US state of Louisiana. Lowes have already committed to a moratorium on this product and Home Depot has give suppliers until Oct 1 to give assurances their products are free from Louisiana Cypress.
This is a great example of organised environmental lobbyists fighting for a good cause and winning. The Save Our Cypress Coalition has been petitioning all three stores since November 2006 and are now only having their voice heard.
And while this is a great outcome that these 3 majors are willing to conform, there are many problems that still lay ahead.
The first, and obvious, one is that while suppliers are being given these mandates it is still predominantly self-regulated. No system for checking on suppliers admissions has been started, or is likely to be put in place. Therefore, the media will need to remain vigilant in order to flush out those suppliers who disregard
It’s an attack ad on Bobby Jindal, the Republican frontrunner for the office of governor in Louisiana, by the Democratic Party. It’s total bullshit. The article in question (available here for $1.50) is little more than Catholic Apology 101. The source of the cherry-picked phrases in an appropriate colour:
Sincerely motivated Christians studying the same texts have disagreed on the fundamentals of the faith, thereby dividing not only Protestants from Catholics, but also particular Protestant denominations from each other. Post-Reformation history does not reflect the unity and harmony of the “one flock” instituted by Christ (Jn. 10:16; see also Jn. 17:11, 17:21-23; Acts 4:32; Eph. 4:3-6, 4:13; Rom. 12:5, 16:17-18; 1 Cor. 1:10-11, 3:4, 12:12-13; Phil. 1:27, 2:2), but rather a scandalous series of divisions and new denominations, including some that can hardly be called Christian. Yet Christ would not have demanded unity without providing the necessary leade

Hat Tip to That Political Blog as this is the only place I have seen this.
Louisiana has become the first state to ban the barbaric procedure known as late term, or partial birth abortion. This is a step in the right direction as this procedure is disgusting. A baby is partially birthed, as the name would indicate, and then murdered by a doctor. A person schooled in helping and saving human lives takes the life of a half birthed baby. Say what you want, this is not abortion.
This law does allow for an exception if the mother’s life is in danger, although I believe this exception is a ruse. If the mother’s life is in danger this late in a pregnancy why can’t the baby be removed by C-section? The pro-death crowd doesn’t want to hear that argument.
Anti-abortion activists call the procedure “partial-birth abortion;” surgeons and abortion rights activists call it “dilation and extraction.” It involves partially removing the fetus intac
I normally dont get too involved in the abortion debate. I think it is another of those decisions that the federal government should have nothing to do with and left to the individual states to decide. But in the case of partial birth abortions I have to chime in with those against it. This paragraph says it all as far as I am concerned: Anti-abortion activists call the procedure "partial-birth abortion;" surgeons and abortion rights activists call it "dilation and extraction." It involves partially removing the fetus intact from a woman's uterus, then crushing or cutting its skull to complete the abortion.Thats just barbaric. The Chinese use that method to enforce their population control laws. So the Democrats are following the example set by the communist Chinese? They must be very proud of themselves. ~RJHFox News story link Louisiana Becomes First State to Ban Late-Term AbortionsFriday, July 13, 2007BATON ROUGE, Louisiana Louisiana became the first
The town of Slidell, LA, is not too far from me. I can get there in an hour. Given my familiarity with the widespread Christian extremism in this area, I was not surprised by news that the ACLU is suing Slidell due to the latest local attempt to violate separation of church and state. The suit concerns a painting of Jee-zuhs in a city courthouse. The ACLU correctly points out that hanging a painting of Jee-zuhs in a courthouse lobby is a constitutional violation. That they actually have to bring suits like this in 2007 is a testament to the level of religious idiocy we have achieved in America.First, the ACLU asked the Slidell City Court to remove the painting voluntarily. Doing so would have avoided any legal action and certainly would have been the right thing to do."We did not file this lawsuit because the ACLU is anti-religion ... We did file this lawsuit because we believe this display is clearly in violation of the law," said Vincent Booth, president and acting executive director
Louisiana legislators have passed a law banning the termination of late term pregnancies. There are no exceptions for the woman’s health. Doctors who make one themselves are subject to arrest. The punishment for acting on the idea that women are entitled to full medical care in all situations is a fine and up to ten years in prison.
Can you say fucked the hell up? Those of the belief that women are life support systems for uteruses that are owned by the men in their lives just effectively made it a fucking crime in the state of Louisiana to value the health and welfare of the woman over the contents of her uterus.
What’s even more annoying is that papers and media outlets are only saying that Governor Blanco hasn’t indicated if she’ll sign it with no reference to the one she signed last year about the same time (html version of SB 33) Called a ‘trigger law’ as it only goes into effect upon the federal termination of civil rights for women, i
