Microsoft has just posted a Blocker tool on its download site (Dec 6,07) that will block automatic installations of several upcoming service packs, including Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows XP SP3. The download includes three versions of the tool -- an executable, a script and a group policy template -- that prevents the service packs from reaching PCs via Windows Update, Microsoft's default update service. The tool blocks Windows Vista SP1, Windows XP SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2 for varying lengths of time. Vista SP1 and XP SP3 can be blocked for as long as 12 months after the service packs are released in final form, while the Server 2003 SP2 blocker bars the download only through March 2008.Microsoft says its "a blocking tool is available for organizations that would like to temporarily prevent installation of Service Pack updates through Windows Update. I'm currently downloading the beta of Microsoft Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" Beta 3 Enterprise Edition. This is a time-limited release of "Longhorn" Beta 3 and will expire on April 7, 2008. There are a number of versions available include x64 bit versions and web server only versions. I've settled for the x86 version as hopefully it will install in a VS2005 partition where I can experiment with it safely.A 1.8Gb .ISO download means that I'll have to dig out ISO Recorder. I may also give Microsofts unsupported Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel for Windows XP another go.There are generally two ways of dealing with ISO images, either burn the ISO images to a CD-ROM (using something like ISO recorder) or use a virtual CD-ROM drive (like the Virtual CD-ROM) that can mount ISO images. My experience of the latter has been a bit hit and miss but I'll keep my options open at this stage.
