LI May home prices fall 10% over '07; Queens down 15%by NY Newsday - fullLast month's median closing prices of homes on Long Island dropped by about 10 percent -- 15 percent in Queens -- compared to a year ago. And when compared to April, the figures reveal an erratic housing market some real estate agents say is still correcting from the boom years and feeling the impact of the subprime mortgage
Here in Long Island, one of the great pleasures of summer is a bowl of steamed mussels. This recipe calls for cultivated mussels. "Culivated mussels?! Does that mean you have to speak French to eat them?" Not really. As opposed to the types of mussels found in the wild, cultivated mussels are farmed by hanging pieces of rope in the water and catchi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A multimillion-dollar Long Island home at the center of a dispute between Grammy-nominated rapper 50 Cent and his former girlfriend was destroyed by a suspicious fire early Friday.
The blaze occurred just days after a heated confrontation inside the woman’s attorney
The home at the center of a legal battle between rapper 50 Cent and his ex-girlfriend was burnt to the ground this morning around 5:00 am. The six people who were inside of the mansion at the time of the fire were taken to Huntington Hospital, where they were treated for non-threatening injuries. I wonder what caused the fire, hopefully no foul play was involved or else Bugsy will be busting some

Housing slump comes to the Hamptons by Financial Times - snip:The US housing slump has arrived at the Hamptons, summer playground of the Manhattan elite. In a sign that falling prices and home sales gluts are no longer limited to the nation’s declining rust-belt cities or bubble markets, prices for gilt-edged properties in East Hampton and Southampton have fallen sharply. The Long Island resort towns, among the wealthiest and most well-connected in the US, experienced a boom between 1998 and 2007 when home values quadrupled. “The downturn has caught up with the Hamptons,” said George Simpson, who runs Suffolk Research, a local real estate data company. The three-month running median sales price of single-family homes in the two towns fell 19.2 per cent to $638,600 (€400,000, £320,

Clam chowder, like most of the great American Regional soups, makes its culinary statement through the use of local ingredients. Also, like many of these regional soups, there is an endless variety in the types of recipes that dot the landscape... whew! So in working up my own version of this particular chowder I did the most sensible thing... "What's that, bub?" Well, I made sure that my chowder recipe reflected the veritable ocean of clam chowder that I've ingested since moving to the shores of Long Island in 1977...heh, heh! Such is the way that true cooks find their way home in the dark, n'est pas?Today's recipe employs a larger version of the littleneck clam called the Quahog clam. Quahog clams, also known as &

All the staff at Matava would like to say a massive thank you to the 19 students and 3 professors from Long Island University. It was an amazing 3 weeks and we miss you all.Once Claude, Sazie, Camille and Bridget (well done all of you), had all passed their open water course, we had 17 divers and 5 snorkellers every day. It was hard work, but by far the funnest group we’ve had. The competition was hot between the 3 dive groups, but Team Speed just pipped “The Diggers” and “Te’s Babies” for the title. Coincidentally I was guiding “Team Speed!” Cheers Jason, Nikki, Marijah, Sara and Amanda for all the laughs. So after 3 weeks of sharks, turtles, mantas, beer pong (Team Taco sucks btw), thumper (Ray you are a legend),two up (sorry Amanda) and general hilarity, its back to the

The maid, wearing rags on her back, had been tortured for more than five years when she wandered into a Dunkin' Donuts on Mother's Day morning. Wounds oozed from her ears; her body was covered with scars. Her story of painful, degrading abuse was corroborated by a co-worker found later that day, cowering in a small closet under the basement stairs of an elegant Long Island mansion. Both women received medical treatment. It was the woman who inflicted the abuse on the maids who ended up in the hospital Monday. After guilty verdicts against her and her husband were read, Varsha Sabhnani fainted and collapsed to the courtroom floor."This did not happen in the 1800s," Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Lesko said in closing arguments. "This happened in the 21st century. This happened in Muttontown, New York."In his closing argument, Lesko said the poorly educated women barely eked out a living in Indonesia and came to the U.S. to work as housekeepers for $100 or $150 a month — all of which
Direct marketing is traditionally through regular mail, phone, and even fax. E-mail is also a direct marketing channel. More and more, direct marketers are integrating the on-line direct marketing channels.
Last Thursday, I was invited to address the Direct Marketing Association of Long Island (DMALI) on the direct marketing opportunities available through Web 2.0, blogs, podcasts, on-line communities, etc.
It was a 1-hour seminar with me and Abe Mezrich of Didit.com.
The full seminar will be on Google Video soon. The first 10 minutes is below. I cite the latest Nielsen ratings for on-line communities and blog platforms.
Of course, the 60-minute audio-book WEB MARKETING 2.0 goes into more step-by-step detail!

What a weekend! On Saturday, I dragged my husband to go to a seminar on green kitchen design in Princeton, New Jersey, Miele's headquarters. Let me tell you, their headquarters are absolutely gorgeous. Modern, colorful, beautifully designed. What a treat. The seminar was filled with great information, which I have to gather together and make several posts of shortly. Very informative and will report back shortly. The seminar was over at about 1:30, and we began the drive back toward Long Island, over the beautiful Verrazano Bridge. When we were in the sort of beachy Brooklyn area on the Belt Parkway, I said, you know, part of me feels like driving to the Hamptons. My husband said, "let's go!" Crazy kids that we are, we did just that...into the remains of a hurricane which came fairly close to Long Island, resulting in wind and rain...very cozy, if not fun to drive in!We stopped at a few great shops, and by this time it was around 4:30. I was immediately inspired! The first

NYC foreclosures up 9.8 percent compared to last yearby NY Daily News - 10/12/07 snip:City homeowners are feeling the pain as foreclosure threats mount - and more trouble may be looming. In the Bronx, the number of foreclosure filings last month surged 21.7% from September 2006 levels, according to RealtyTrac, the real estate Web site.In Brooklyn, foreclosure filings were up 17.5% from a year earlier, and in Queens the numbers were 13.7% higher. Citywide, filings rose 9.8% - far better than the housing troubles nationwide, in which foreclosure filings have doubled in the past year. Some housing advocates cautioned that city homeowners' problems are worse than the statistics suggest. "The number of filings does not reflect the truth of the situation," said Carol Finegan, a foreclosure prevention counselor at Brooklyn Housing & Family Services. "Foreclosure actions aren't happening yet. Banks are stalling as long as they can." The problems she sees in Brooklyn are being repeated i
Looks like the dreaded noose is on a roll. The latest noose incident involves a noose that was found hanging in a Long Island, NY police station. The police station is one of the most diverse police departments in the state, prompting claims that such a despicable act is “out of character” for the community. No one is sure why the noose was hung. However, there are two theories. The first theory is that the noose was hung in response to a Black man being recently promoted to deputy chief. The second theory is that someone is angry about a push to recruit more minorities to the force. Whatever the reason, the noose was found hanging in the men’s locker room. Only police officers have access to the room. So, a member of law enforcement, responsible for protecting those in his community (including many Blacks), is bold enough to commit a hate crime at his place of work. No word of what—if any—evidence was collected at the scene of the noose hanging.Source: NY Daily N

The Brabant’s of Stony Brook, NY enjoyed a two week vacation based out of a beach home in Garden City. They scored their rental on Vacation Rental By Owner, got a great deal and a great house right on the beach. And, the pool was a usual hangout with the rough riptides.
The clan of grandma and grandpa, two sisters, one dad, one toddler, and a teething baby, ventured all over the Grand Strand. They visited Broadway at the Beach and, one of my favorite places, Waccatee Zoo .
My son and I chowed down a terrific lunch with them on Labor Day (which included authentic pasta salad). And, because they asked me about the best local butcher (Myrtle Beach has A butcher?), I now know J & J’s Butcher Shop on Inlet Sq. Dr. in Murrell’s Inlet is THE place.
See all of you on your next trip here!

Well, that's me, of course, a Long Island kitchen designer! My market/territory/areas served are the Long Island and New York metro area and beyond as demanded! We know that, so?What I'd like to talk about today is that the kitchen design "look" of Long Island, for the most part, reflects its well established suburban roots. Long Island being situated in the Northeast, close to New England, surrounded by history, naturally evokes tradition in many aspects of suburban life, creating a Long Island kitchen design point of view. The majority of the architecture on Long Island is based in tradition, as are most furnishings seen in the homes here, as well as traditional landscaping, artwork, accessories, and other areas of home design.I'm yawning already, what's the point?? Don't be so impatient! Here's the point! Most of my clients are in lock step with their physical, regional, surroundings as opposed to who they are, what styles appeal to them, where their interests li
Looks innocent doesn’t it? It’s a great summer drink & is quite refreshing… but don’t be fooled. When I was first starting my drinking experience I always avoided the L.I.I.T. because I had always thought that it was a girly drink. I mean, ice tea? Boring, especially when there are drinks like the Jager Bomb & the Alabama Slamma. Against my better manly judgment, i tried one, two, three, fuor, fife… oh wow, am i durkn. After a few, you will be feeling it, I guarantee it! Don’t underestimate the power of Lipton ice tea.
Just mix the below ingredients over ice, pour it in my favorite class, the Collins glass & add garnish (lemon or pineapple)if you feel so inclined. The beauty of a Long Island Ice Tea is that it tastes like ice tea! The greatest experience you can have with a Long Island is to use only top-shelf liquors for it. What a difference! Sure, the bar way is fine, but when you has for a Top-Shelf L.I.I.T. you know you have it m

Suffolk County Republicans are endorsing incumbent Democrat Steve Levy for reelection, failing to get their own candidate. It's the first major party cross-endorsement in a county executive race in Long Island history.Republicans admitted the reason for the cross-endorsement was due to the overwhelming popularity of Steve Levy and the slim chances Republicans have of even making it a race. In order to avoid a Levy Democratic landslide countywide, the GOP endorsed him, therefore allowing straight-ticket voters to vote for Levy and other Republicans without switching columns on election day.Still, Democrats are excited about the fact they will continue to hold both county executive seats for another two years at least, when Nassau County votes. Also, the cross-endorsements shows the sad state of the once-dominat GOP on Long Island.Says Town Supervisor Philip Nolan (D-Islip);"I'm just amazed, This is not the same Republican county where I wasraised."
Which for him may well also be January, 2009."Members of Congress, whether in my party or the other party, who supported the war and are now turning against it because it's unpopular, that to me is disgraceful. If you can't take a political hit, then you can't send soldiers into war to take real bullets."King may gain points with his own party by standing by his convictions, but his district isn't a rock ribbed Republican one. It, and Fossella's NY-13, say a 9/11 Republican bounce that has allowed them to survive for so long. I'm telling you from someone who lives within miles of both districts, the war is uber unpopular in these districts, and Bush is even more so.He is popular because up until last year, nobody saw how closely associated with Bush he is. He won last year with 56%, a drastic change for the worse from his previous reelects.A strong challenger in an anti-Republican Presidential year can topple him. It won't be easy though, especially if Rudy Giuliani is the GOP n
Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy will be officially endorsed today by Patrick Vecchio, the dean of the county's town supervisors. Vecchio, the Republican supervisor of Smithtown since 1978 has never endorsed a county executive candidate, and ran a short-lived GOP primary race to run against Democrat Robert Gaffney in 1991.It's the not the first time Vecchio, the leader of the island's major Republican stronghold, has endorsed a Democrat in Suffolk County. Last year he endorsed Congressman Tim Bishop, who represents the First District of New York, which stretches from Smithtown to Montauk, for reelection. Bishop won in a landslide.Levy is expected to do the same.
Patti Ann McDonald was elected Mayor of the village of Malverne on Long Island yesterday. She is wife of Steven McDonald, the former New York City Police Officer who was shot and paralyzed in 1986 in Central Park and subsequently became a non-violence activist. She defeated incumbent mayor Anthony Panzarella by a wide margin in Tuesday's local elections. It's the third Tuesday in March in an odd year...so that means it's village election time on Long Island. This year's headline is McDonald's victory. Not much happened elsewhere, but nevertheless, for those who are interested, here are some of the results;-David Nyce was elected Mayor of Greenport on the east end-Bellerose mayor Donna Sherrer was reelected-In Stewart Manor, voters approved funding to renovate the town's community pool, the oldest on Long Island-Attorney Brian Curran will be the new Mayor of Lynbrook-Edward Cahill will continue to be Mayor of Valley Stream-Mineola Mayor Jack Martins was reelected, despite public op
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi has an idea...abandon his party's liberal base. The super genius who decided to waste half a year taking on the most poweful man in New York in last year's governor's race is trying to get his consumer affairs commissioner, Roger Bogsted, to run against popular Republican Kate Murray for town supervisor. The problem? Bogstead is the chair of the Nassau County Conservative Party. The Conservative Party and the Democratic Party usually do not mix. In fact, sometimes, the Conservative Party and the Republican Party don't mix. The idea is smart on paper, take the Conservative voters, who usually number around 7,500 and pull them to the Democrats, and that may be enough of a margin to defeat the Republican candidate in a town that's trending toward the Democrats. Hempstead has been run by Republicans ever since the town's government was formed, but Democrats have carried the county in national, state and even county elections. More than 75% of the town

At CW Post Campus in Long Island, the Brookville Hall mascot “Pete”a rubber duckie, was taken hostage by terrorists!
Oops never mind, it is all good. For it was just a youthful prank. Some didn’t see it that way though, their feelings were hurt. Talk about thin skin. The entire “2 minute” “A “Duck Napping,” was caught on film. Yes folks it only lasted “2 minutes” The video was posted on YouTube and Google video, but (of course) it has since been removed. Of course. It was satire folks, satire. The hostage was a “rubber duck” for God’s sake! Damn I thought Muslims had a sense of humor. But then again, maybe they don’t.
Supposedly there was no mention of Muslim terrorists in the prank. Yes they used cheesy accents, so what? So why the uproar? Who I ask is assuming what? They are so quick to jump on anything and everything, that vaguely relates to the what they deem to be offensive,
According to an article in today's Westport News, Sandy Point in West Haven is named as one of the stewardship sites that would benefit from the $25 million of federal funding. However, the Long Sound Stewardship Act still must be signed by President Bush.According to the article:It is a bill authorizing $25 million in federal funding annually to further the goals of an initiative that includes purchasing land and development rights to properties along the Sound.(...) Linked to the Senate action, environmental officials from Connecticut, New York and the federal government have agreed to designate 33 areas along the Sound's coastline as ecological or recreational assets needing restoration, protection and research -- with 17 of them in Connecticut. They have established a committee to oversee spending $6 million to restore coastal and river habitats on both sides of the Sound. The surprising wording above is about the "purchasing land and development rights" - I'm not certain that
