For some reason I can not get Windows Live Writer to install on my computer using the integrated Live installer. It just gives me some meaningless error message and dies. What I needed was a standalone installer that didn't require an Internet connection to execute. Well, after much searching, I found links to standalone installers for all the Windows Live programs. One note of caution for some wordpress users. They may get some error when they upload their entry. The entry will be published but wont be updated in the WLW ... this fix will help you here. And those of you, who have Word 2007 installed, may not find this much useful as it already has good blogging features for any blog provider out there including Wordpress, etc. Another dampener...
9 months after the release of the first beta version of Windows Live Writer (WLW), Microsoft announced on May 30th the release of the beta 2 version. I like WLW and i have been using it since i started to blog.
Many bloggers talked about the neat features of WLW beta 2, so i won’t bother you with that stuff. I would rather concentrate on the rather painful and undocumented upgrade process from beta 1 to beta 2 on Windows Vista. I expected the installation will be simple and straightforward, but unfortunately, i spent around 30 minutes gathering information until i finally tweaked it and made it work .
So for my readers’ benefit, i woudl like to outline the right installation/upgrade process for WLW beta 2:
1. If you have WLW beta 1 installed, ensure that all work is backed up. This can be done using WLW backup, a routine which i reviewed not long ago.
2. Using your Control Panel, remove Windows Live Writer beta 1.
3. Run the WLW remov
Anything, within reason of course, that purports to make life a little easier is worth investigating and it is with that in mind that I'm testing Windows Live Writer[1] an editor for creating blog entries. I feel immediately more comfortable as the text entry area is much larger and the spell chekka (sic!) is a welcome addition. BTW, it's worth updating the visual style under the Tools Menu so LiveWriter matches the blog as it will be displayed. The drop down category list is also welcome. Clicking on the down arrow brings up all the previously defined categories and you simply click in the check boxes to include them. You can also add a number of plugins[2] to extend the functionality of the blogger, for example to include acronym lookups, snapshots of URLs, Codepasting, and 40+ other useful things. A few days ago we announced support for MetaWeblog, which is a protocol that allows you to edit your blog entries offline, using an editor, and publish them to your blog whenever you want. Although my web sites run on Wordpress, I usually write blog posts using Windows Live Writer (WLW), which I have installed on my desktop . Among many things I like about WLW, is the ability to easily backup my work as a file in my local PC or network drive, and to restore it in emergency cases. The utility I use in order to backup my WLW work is interestingly called “ Windows Live Writer Backup Utility” .
The backup utility takes care not only of your recent blogs and blog drafts, but also your blog/s settings and installed plugins. Backup is kept as a *.wlwbackup file.
Note for Wordpress users : The utility doesn’t backup your blog database, themes, settings etc’, so it does not replace the great Wordpress backup plugin, that should be used periodically in order to provide a failover.

I’m just sitting here playing with Microsofts new Beta version of Windows Live Writer. My initial impression is that this tool is a little more intuitive and easy to use than the regular wordpress backend editor. You should probably check out this new tool while the price is right, if you know what I mean.
Features of Live Writer that immediately impressed me were as follows:
1) True WYSIWYG: Live Writer takes WYSIWYG to the next level by actually showing me what my post will look like, with the correct proportions and styling downloaded from my custom wordpress site, in real time. It takes the guess work out of whether my pictures are too large or too small, whether my text wraps in a way that will ultimately annoy me, and whether my article needs to have a “more” tag inserted.
2) Basic Photo Editing: I love being able to add a “Real Opinionated” watermark to my photos, not that anybody is exactly standing in line to rip off my stuff, but yo
Today there is something new about this blog and that is the way this post was published. This post was written using Windows Live Writer which is a part of Windows Live Software Services and is one of the best Desktop Blogging Tools around.
The reason why most people do not like this amazing desktop remote blogging software and the same reason for which I stopped using Windows Live Writer is that Windows Live Writer does not support Tag or in other words does not allow you to use Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin which is the best SEO Plugin for wordpress.

I have reported on the past about Windows Live Writer which is an awesome FREE blogging tool made by Microsoft and yes, it is FREE! I am writing this post using this blogging tool. One of the great things I like about this tool is the fact that Microsoft allows outside programmers to create Writer extensions which enhance the functionality of Windows Live Writer. The Windows Live Spaces team has released a desktop application that is supposed to make it easier to write posts on not only your Windows Live Spaces Blog, but is supposed to support other formats as well such as Wordpress, TypePad, Blogger, Movable Type, and more. I actually have a few blogger accounts and would be greatly interested in a faster easier way to write posts on the blog so I will check this out soon and let you all know. Google actually released a plug-in for Word that seems to be all over everyones blog as a suggested utility, however, even Blogger says the utility does not work with their current version.
Windows Live writer allows for WYSIWYG authoring so you should know exactly how your post is going to look before hitting the send button, as well as photo publishing and even map publishing using the Windows Live Local service.

A comment to my previous post from Spike Washburn (of the Windows Live Writer team no less!) suggests image uploading won't be supported until Blogger improve their API, which is a shame. So Blogger, get your finger out! And apologies if it appeared that I was suggesting Windows Live Writer deliberately wasn't supporting image uploads to Blogger. A couple of other points about Writer. First, I'm very pleased to see it is a managed application. Great to see MS dogfooding the .NET Framework and proving it's possible to produce professional apps using WinForms. Second, it's great to see developers from MS responding to blog posts from little old me. Fact is I'm a Z-list blogger that no-one reads but I've had two lots of feedback from MS people. That kind of communication will really help build a good feeling towards MS in the IT community. And yes, I'm using Writer to write this post.
