There is increasing evidence racist attacks are growing in many areas in Lithuania. The Indian singer, Bemeen, who works in the area has encountered examples of people using expressions such as “nigger” in order to describe him or his colleagues. This week, a gang assualted Bemeen, who is black, resulting in a beating that sent [...]
There is very interesting definition of cities in Lithuania. As per parliament of Lithuanian a city is defined as the compact areas populated by more than three thousand people. The definition is interesting and strange as well because there are various cities in the countries like India and china where such definition is implied for villages. Thus as per definition; there are 103 cities in Lithuania. Smaller settlements in Lithuania like ‘town’ is known as ‘miestelis’ and villages are known as ‘kaimas’. If, the status of the place is not clear than that place is referred as ‘gyvenviete’. Klaipedia is officially the first city of Lithuania which was established in medieval period. During this period, location for cities was determined on the basis of trade and transportati

Apologize for the brevity, but there's not little happening off and plenty going on the pitch today which is how I like it and how it should be.- Lithuania will appeal the two-ban match on midfielder Saulius Mikoliunas for diving.- Wanna know what the proposed colors for the Philly side is if the MLS awards the city with a club? All I can say is ugh. Seriously, if you want to be taken seriously outside of the 14-year-olds in this country, you need to act like it.- The head coach for France's Rugby team was injured... playing soccer.- Hired than fired before being hired, in other words, welcome to Canada Soccer, Fred Nykamp.- All the man wants is a goal. One measly goal. Maybe he should try the Suicidal Tendencies approach instead of begging. Cheers.src='http://kona.kontera.com/javascript/lib/KonaLibInline.js'>
Recently I browsed through the statistics of tourism in Lithuania on the whole. As they provide only the data of how many foreigners were actualy living in the hotels, motels and other places, the numbers can be not very exact, but this shows the trends.
In year 2006 Lithuania had more that 750′000 foreign visitors living in hotels and motels. This number increased 11% from year 2005, which is quite good growth.
Biggest growth was in towns like Druskininkai, Palanga, Birstonas, up to 50% from year to year.
Vilnius only had 530′000 visitors in 2006, with a 12% increase from year 2005.
If we split the visitors by country, the first one is Germany, then goes Poland, Latvia, Russia, UK and Finland.
Probably they now the reasons why to come to Vilnius…
Looking in the keywords that are popular in Google I saw that many people are looking for a taxi numbers in Vilnius. I already mentioned in my previous post about transport in Vilnius, that it is better to call a taxi and ask them to come to the airport than use the taxi in front of the airport door.
So I thought it will be usefull for You to have these numbers.
If You will buy a Lithuanian calling card, You can use the number 1422. If you use your own mobile foreign number, use +370 5 240 00 04. If you are comming in a busy time, like Friday or Saturday evening, you can call a VIP number 1415, but this will cost you the same as the taxi standing outsite in the airport. But you might need this number when getting back from a club at night. VIP number is always free line and the taxi will come faster. Price per km - 3 LTL.
These all numbers are from one Taxi company. If you would want to use others: 1445, 1818, 1410.
1. Architecture. There are a lot of different architecture to see. The ones that like travelling to see the cities, old buildings, churches and hear some history behind it - Vilnius is the best place to be. Lithuanian history is very rich in stories, dating a thousand years back.
2. Nightlife. Vilnius is a new Prague or Paris. I read this in one of the blogs on internet, from the prople that came to Vilnius. There are a lot of clubs and pubs to have fun. You can choose from beer pubs with Lithuanian style, Irish pubs (Dubliner), strip clubs, dancing places and a lot more. Kaunas, a city 100km from Vilnius is more a clubbing city, there are parties with well-known Djs every weekend.
3. Celebrate your party in Vilnius: birthday or bachelor. Clubs and bars are already mentioned. But go fishing, skydiving, paragliding, drive 4×4 in the woods (if you find a normal team of off-roadsters, you will definitely never forget the experience, as they will let you do anything you want), have s
Roaming costs are going down after European Commission requested this from mobile operators. But local cals anyway are cheaper and somethimes more convenient, as you can use all the local short numbers to call for a taxi. So if possible, take your old phone and use the pre-paid calling cards.
There are 3 operators in Lithuania: BITE, Omnitel and Tele2. They have several pre-paid brands. As the telecommunication competition in Lithuania is very high, the local calling prices are really very low. Based on the statistics, Lithuania was the cheapest telco country in the whole European Union.
You can choose from LABAS (operator BITE), Ežys (Omnitel), Extra (Omnitel) and Pildyk (Tele2). LABAS, Ežys and EXTRA would be best choices if you are planning to travel outside Vilnius, as the coverage of BITE and Omnitel is the best. But otherwise the prices are very similar.
If you will travel to Vilnius in a group, a good idea would be buy one brand pre-paid cards to keep in touch during the trip.
I thought best way to start would be to gather some of the best comments already posted about Vilnius. So I browsed through internet and found some really nice and full stories about how people visited Vilnius and how they were surprised to see different view from the imagined Soviet ruins.
Also this will give you a different view form the people who already visited Vilnius and Lithuania.
http://realtravel.com/vilnius-journals-j5421465.html in this link an active traveler Zoe posted a story more about center of Vilnius and the old town experience. She visites Gate of Dawn, some of the nicest churches in the old town. Next day she tells a story about Trakai, a small but very visited city near Vilnius (only about 20 km).
http://realtravel.com/vilnius-journals-j4578424.html Kate here did some skydiving, making here stay more extreme in Lithuania. It is quite popular for the travelers from UK and USA to come to Lithuania for a set of extreme adventures - from paragliding and skydiving to
Lithuania and Vilnius is becoming more and more popular destinations of Wester Europe travelers and especialy youth, students. But Lithuania and all Baltic states still are perceived as Soviet Union countries, a lot of people often ask “are you russian”?
I better like the comments of people who already visited Vilnius, they compare it with Prague, Paris. And these comments are real, created by real experiences and not by 10 year old history, which is already far in the past.
So I thought it would be a good idea to make a blog about Vilnius and places to see and make it with local touch. There are a lot of sites with information about the Lithuania and Vilnius, but they are more dedicated to tourist to buy their travel packages. This is supposed to be real and with no commercial touch.
And if You are planning to visit Vilnius, please write Your questions in the comment boxes, i will try to cover any missing information that you might need.

Among the pine forests of north- eastern Lithuania, a dried-up oil pipeline called Druzhba -- Russian for friendship -- has become a symbol for the increasingly hollow relations between the Baltic states and Russia. A year ago, a reported leak on Russian territory blocked the flow of oil into AB Mazeikiu Nafta, the only refinery in the three former Soviet republics. While deliveries have stopped before at politically tense moments, this time the refinery didn't wait for the leak to be fixed. President Bush Meets with President Adamkus of Lithuania, FULL STREAMING VIDEO, Oval Office. 11:02 A.M. EST. In Focus: Global Diplomacy PRESIDENT BUSH: It's my honor to welcome a personal friend and a friend of freedom and peace to the Oval Office. Mr. President, I respect you, I respect your country. Lithuania has been a country whose history has been one of great tragedy. You, yourself, have lived through that tragedy. And it's so refreshing for a person like me to talk to somebody and to strategize with somebody who knows the great blessings of living in a free society. The example of your country is an important example for the world, and that is that freedom is universal, that those of us who have the benefits of living in a free society must prevent a country such as yours from ever again being subjected to the tyranny of a few. You know full well the suffering that your relatives went through. And, therefore, I find it -- I'm not surprised that in a struggling democracy like Afg

Quick post:
I'm being sent to Lithuania for work. I'm still trying to work out what I've done to deserve this. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Swedish government may have something to do with this.
The point here is that I doubt that I will be able blog from where I'll be.
You'll hear from me again when I'm back; by the weekend.
This would be a great opportunity for you to relive the
