What This Office Needs Is A Good Inside Linebacker
As a big fan of The Office, I’ve  thought “How could they improve upon the characters they already have?”.  The answer, of course, is not easily.  Everybody has their favorites, and at times, their not so favorites.  Nukegirl giggled the other day while watching with me and said; “Daddy, what’s a beet?”  Thankfully, beets have [...]

Patriots Draft Recap, Day Two: Pats Add Linebacker and Cornerback Depth
The Patriots were able to add to next year’s draft by trading their first of three third round picks to the Chargers for a 2009 second round pick and a fifth round pick this year. I love that the Patriots are always looking to set themselves up for next year’s draft. It’s just one of the reasons why the New England Patriots are the most dominant team in the NFL right now. For a recap of day one, click here. Third Round Pick (78th overall): Shawn Crable, LB, MichiganCrable is a pass rushing outside linebacker with experience playing with his hand both on and off the ground. He’ll step right in as a situational pass rusher and a special teams contributor. He projects to an outside linebacker in the Patriots’ system. He should benefit from learning behind Mike Vrabel, assuming

      Jets Sign Outside Linebacker
The Jets have signed rookie defensive end/linebacker Marques Murrell off of the Eagles’ practice squad. In his final two seasons at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville, NC, Murrell registered 21 sacks to earn All-Region honors. He went on to become a two-time first team All-American at Appalachian State University, finishing his collegiate career with 36 sacks and a school-record 18 forced fumbles. He gained 13 sacks in both his junior and senior seasons. Murrell went undrafted in the 2007 draft and signed on with the Eagles on their practice squad. The 22-year old Murrell is the younger brother of former Jets runningback Adrian Murrell. He was also a defensive end in both college and Philadelphia, but will now stand up and play as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.

Jaguars Sign Veteran Linebacker Chris Claiborne
The Jacksonville Jaguars were looking for, and got themselves some linebacker help on Sunday, as the team has signed unrestricted free agent LB Chris Claiborne to a one-year deal.  The former first rounder was released by the Giants last October and was not in a training camp this summer.  Reports say that he had a strong workout with the Jags, and that the deal likely was for the NFL minimum base salary of $720,000.  Part of the reason for the signing is for depth, the other is to help out in a pinch, as right now Clint Ingram is hurt with an ankle injury.  He did not play in the teams preseason game Thursday vs the Packers. Claiborne was the Lions first round pick in 1999, and last season spent four weeks with the Giants, playing in two games and reocrding two tackles.  He has played with the Lions, Vikings, Rams, Giants, and now the Jags.  In eight seasons, Claiborne has 569 tackles, 15 sacks, eight interceptions, 30 passes defensed, and eight forced fumbles. He has appeared i

      Jets Sign Runningback & Linebacker
According to Hoss Aultman of Jets Confidential, the New York Jets have signed RB Tony Fisher and LB Mark Zalewski. Fisher rushed for 880 yards and scored four touchdowns in 235 rushing attempts for the Green Bay Packers over his first four seasons in the NFL. He signed on with the St. Louis Rams for the 2006 season and was used primarily as a third-down back. Fisher ran the ball six times and caught 14 passes out of the backfield, however he was placed on injured reserved with a torn ACL ending his season. He is definitely a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield bringing in 48 receptions for 347 yards with 1 touchdown in 2005 behind Ahman Green. The Jets were desperate for a veteran runningback after losing Cedric Houston. Zalewski tried out for the team during minicamp, but wasn’t signed. He spent his college career at the University of Wisconsin. Zalewski was a team captain for a young Badgers defense in 2006.

Pats Sign Linebacker Chad Brown; Release Three
In a move that was talked about last week, the Pats have signed veteran free agent linebacker Chad Brown to a contract. In doing that, the team also announced they have released three players. Brown, who is now 36, comes back to New England after playing with the Pats in their Super Bowl season of 2005. Last year he was with Pittsburgh, the team he was originally drafted by in 1993 out of Colorado. With the Steelers last year, Brown had seven tackles and one sack in playing in eight games. The year before with New England, Brown had 57 tackles in 15 games. Three of the tackles came on special teams. He has 79 career sacks in 14 NFL seasons playing with the Steelers, Seahawks and Pats. The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker was a four-year starter for the Steelers before he headed to the Seahawks, where he played eight seasons. Released from the Pats on Thursday included cornerback Antwain Spann, wide out Jonathan Smith, and tight end Jake Nordin. Spann played in eight games with the Pats l

For a Rookie Linebacker, It’s Like Going to Work
The first day on the job is always a little scary, even if you are a professional football player.Much like the rest of his fellow collegians preparing to enter the work force, Stewart Bradley had concerns: fitting in with his co-workers, getting to know his bosses and dealing with the anxiety of starting a new career.Though he puts on a helmet and pads instead of a suit and tie, it is still a job.“Someone asks you where you were today, you’re like, I had to go to work,” Bradley said last week, putting in a little overtime after his first N.F.L. minicamp. “It’s your job.”It is not a bad career for someone who walked on at Nebraska because a rash of injuries in high school ruined his senior season. But Bradley, like any driven young professional, knows he cannot rest on his laurels.“You can’t get too hyped up in this ritzy lifestyle that everyone talks about and reads about,” he said, “because when it comes down to it, you’re just a regular guy going to work.”A t

Bengal Linebacker Nicholson Arrested for Assault on Woman
I guess the whole deal of the Cincinnati Bengals trying to clean up their image is out the window.  Friday, Linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested on a domestic violence charge after a woman called 911 on Friday afternoon to say she had been assaulted by Nicholson.  The woman, Victoria Johnson, says that Nicholson punched her in the face, and there was swelling around Johnson’s left eye.  He was charged with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor.  Of course this is the first arrest of a Bengal, a team that has been in more legal trouble than any other, since league commish Roger Goodell laid the law down awhile ago. Goodell has already dealt with two Bengals - wide out Chris Henry, and Linebacker Odell Thurman.  Both are already suspended for misconduct.  Nicholson was on the list already as one nine Bengals arrested during a nine-month span.  When Goodell talks about teams that need to get in line with the League’s policy’s, the Bengals are at the top of the li
