Scientists at Nokia have developed software that transforms a mobile phone into a signal receiver and warns the user of an approaching lightning strike.Basically, a lightning bolt is an electric current that emits radio waves, which each bolt producing frequencies between 10 hertz and 5 gigahertz. Why I can't blog these days:My mom spent my entire pregnancy telling me that "lightning doesn't strike twice." My first baby was as colicky as they get and I was paralyzed with fear during this pregnancy that colic would strike again. It has. Moms are sneaky liars.It turns out that only people who sleep can blog. I can't for the life of me put together a single creative thought. Trust me, I've tried. My blogger account is full of posts I've tried to write during the past four weeks, each one more bland than the last. I don't know what to do other than plagiarize other people's blogs and call their witty, cohesive posts my own. Here's a contest over at Modern Mom I'd like to enter though. Corel has decided to get into the Web 2.0 game with a new program called Word Perfect Lightning which is a free, compact version of Word Perfect. The program is small at only 16MB and can be placed on a USB memory stick or burned to a CD for portability. What Corel is trying to do is combine desktop and Web applications as they have teamed with Joynet which offers email, calendaring, address books, and file storage. Corel is taking a hybrid approach to make it easier for users and to hopefully increase productivity. With Word Perfect Lightning users can signup for a free account which gives them 200MB of storage. Lightning comes with three simple tools: Navigator, Viewer, and Notes Window. While this seems like an interesting approach to combining Web and desktop, it is just a fancy notepad with online storage, email, and calendaring. Lightning may have struck twice in the HSBC arena last night, but it wasn’t enough for Tampa Bay to overcome the 7 goal second period by the Buffalo Sabres.
I was in for a real treat last night, I had seats just inside the blue line, 13 rows from the ice, on the end where all 9 goals were scored. The view was fantastic. Even though the Sabres had the game well in hand, very few people left early.
The game was an unusual one due to the bizarre 2nd period. First, there was the Sabres scoring 7 goals and making it look extremely easy. Second, the review of one of the Sabres’ goals took forever. Third, the glass was broken and had a nice sized hole which caused the referees to end the period with 2:08 left and tack the time on to open the 3rd period before the teams switched ends.
