      St. George Reef Lighthouse
About about eight miles northwest of Crescent City lies another lighthouse, St. George Reef. This one is a littler harder to get to since it is on a rocky Island out in the Pacific Ocean. The light was lit for the first time on October 20, 1892 and continued to shine until 1975 when it was abandoned. To view the St. George Reef Lighthouse from land, go north on the road that hugs the coast in Crescent City. When you arrive at the airport, turn left on Radio Road and follow it to the beach at its end. This is Point St. George, and the housing used for the keepers when they were ashore is adjacent to the parking area. The St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society offers helicopter tours out to the lighthouse weather permitting.

      Battery Point (Crescent City) Lighthouse
The light house is located in Northern California, just below the Oregon border, in Crescent City. The Lighthouse and its museum is open to the public for tours including opportunities to look into the personal quarters of keepers and their families and the furniture and artifacts they have left behind since the 1850's. Tours include a climb into the light tower. There are displays of many maritime artifacts, photographs and documents that chronicle its history. The Lighthouse is open April through September, tides permitting, between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM, Wednesday through Sunday. Visits to the Battery Point Lighthouse and Island are only possible at low tides. Extreme care and caution should be used when crossing the two hundred feet between the mainland and island anytime wave a

ABC Wednesday - L is for Lighthouse
(The Wordless Wednesday post is beneath this post.)L is for Lighthouse ....... It was early evening by the time we arrived at the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, and the light was falling just right on this famous landmark.Affectionately know as The Nubble, this light resides on a small island of steep rocks that is accessible by a seat that is hung from a pully line. It extends across from the mainland for supplies to be sent across. This photo was taken last autumn, and it is always crowded there with bus loads of tourists. When we were there, there were two weddings going on, a man ocean fly-fishing, and divers just coming in from an evening dive.Photographers, artists, and sightseers of all ages were vying for a spot on the rocky shore to enjoy this historic beauty.

      Capones Island and its lighthouse
Capones Island has always been famous for its white sand beaches and the Spanish colonial lighthouse perched on top of a hill. It was the last stop for our San Antonio, Zambales trip. From Anawangin, we had prearranged with our boatman to pick us up and bring us to Capones Island. We made it there just in time for lunch. The island was so picturesque as we slowly closed in on it. When we finally made landfall, I was raring to find a shady place to take a nap having had no sleep for the last 30 hours. And I did and found myself cozy on the sand drifting away to lala land.Since we didn't have much time left, we had to forgo the hike up to the lighthouse. Add to the fact it was hot and I had already consumed my supply of water. So we were content with making one round by boat on the way back

      Lighthouse
8"X10" Watercolour on paper I was determined to paint outside today, rain was forecast for later in the day, so how cold could it be? I went down to the lake, only to discover that whatever precipitation that pregnant sky was about to unleash, it wasn't going to be rain. It must have been at least -5C (about 22-23 F), far too cold for this wuss to paint. So I took some pictures and came home. I haven't done much true watercolour for a while, so I didn't really achieve the effect I was looking for. Oh well, I needed a change. Edit I decided I had to have another kick at the can. One thing about seeing your work on the screen, it really serves to bring the faults to the fore. I mostly just darkened the sky, this is a little closer to what I wanted. The sky still looks a little too blue on

      Peggy's Cove Lighthouse - revisted
A good shot is worth working on until you are fully satisfied. I went back and worked on this one after discussing it with a few friends and trying things out. Here is the final and I am VERY satisfied with it.By cropping out the road and most of the close rocks, I took away elements that were not adding to the value of the picture and also managed to lower the horizon putting the lighthouse and the lady at a rule of thirds focal point. I know I am self congratulating on this one, but I like it a lot! :)

      Lighthouse At Peggy's Cove
So what is a reasonable amount of post processing? At what level does an image go from a processed photograph to graphic art? Many purists would suggest that any post processing is a sin. Those same people do not consider that when they send their photos to a lab for printing, some post processing is being done by the lab itself! Moreover, when you choose pre-set camera settings on a digital camera (portrait/Indoor/Cloudy/Sports/etc...), these are post processing that the camera computer does to the image before it saves it. So what is the limit? In this post I am showing a before and after image of the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. The photograph was taken in a lull between showers. Everyone came out to take pictures then and as you can see the scene was crowded. My vision was not that. I w

Haunted Lighthouses - New London Ledge Lighthouse
Located at the mouth of the Thames River, entrance to New London Harbor, Connecticut at the eastern end of Long Island Sound sits the New London Ledge Lighthouse. Built in 1909 on the Southwest Ledge, the lighthouse was originally called the Southwest Ledge Light, but to avoid confusion with another lighthouse in New Haven, the Southwest Ledge Light, the lighthouse was renamed to New London Ledge Light in 1910.This lighthouse itself is a unique, one-of-a-kind structure with square red brick quarters topped with a mansard roof (a French type of roof designed to make maximum use of the interior space of the attic) and a circular lantern room. To appease the residents who didnt want to gaze upon an eyesore sitting in the sea, the lighthouse was built in Colonial and French architectural style

A winding pathway leads down to the lighthouse from the visitors center. Warning signs advise you about the 300 steps you need to travel down to the lighthouse. Going down is not too bad but climbing back up is not for everyone. On a clear day you get breathtaking views of Farallon Islands and the Pacific Ocean below. This rugged section of California coast is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore covering approximately 71,000 acres. No Mail at The Lighthouse
From A Day At a Time, Dec. 11: " Before I came to The Program- in fact, before I knew of The Program's existence- I drifted from crises to crises, occasionally using my will to chart a new course; However, like a rudderless ship, I inevitably foundered once again on the rocks of my own despair. Today, in contrast, I receive guidance from my Higher Power. Sometimes , the only answer is a sense of peace or an assurance that all is well..... May I not expect instant, verbal communication with my Higher Power, like directions on a stamped, self-addressed post-card. May I have patience, and listen and sense that G-d is present ".Yes, I remember the times when I thought I had to find all the solutions, and felt like the answers (and responsibility for them) were in my power. Usually, I WAS like a ship tossed in the wild sea, not finding the lighthouse that could direct me out of my crises. NAUTICAL LIGHTHOUSE BEDDING and DECOR for TEENS
All the lighthouses in this set would be capable of lighting up the entirety of Cape Cod! No need to use more than one or two lighthouse decorations in any yachting or sailor girl's bedroom. Play off the blues, grays with shots of bright red in solid colors or maybe a fabric printed with tiny anchors, flags or other nautical prints that visually blend at a distance would be best. Throw in some polished brass lanterns, table lamps and maybe a life buoy and your lighthouse bedding will settle in for smooth sailing. The lighthouse theme area rug might be ok so long as you could put it somewhere on the floor where it didn't fight for attention with the lighthouse medallion on the comforter. Maybe a bathroom would be a good place for it?

This exact lighthouse you are looking at, was built in 1957, after the one destroyed by the Nazi German troops in 1944.Near the lighthouse there are several more attractions. For example, you can lay on a much less crowded sandy beach or swim, watching ships going in or out of the Riga Port. Or you can walk in the nearby Piejuras (Seaside) nature park.

As usual, we went to occupy Strumble Head Lighthouse by Fishguard in West Wales. We have had permission to stay there from Trinity house, which looks after all the Lighthouses in the UK. Strumble Head Lighthouse is not open to public, so I can say we were 3rd time lucky to stay there. All together we have done slightly over 1000 contacts, mostly on 20m, few on other bands as well. 40m was not the best band for us, however team effort was there and we have done the best we could. Some of which is quoted below. High Resolution Image"On the island of Pharos, the famous lighthouse, reckoned one of the wonders of the world, was built by the architect Sostratus of Cnidos, begun, no doubt, under Ptolemy I and finished early in the reign of Ptolemy II. "The material used in its construction was chiefly nummulitic limestone. The sculptural decoration as well as other accessory ornamentation was partly in marble and partly in bronze. The innumerable columns were for the most part of Aswan granite. The lantern was formed of eight columns, surmounted by a cupola above which was raised a bronze statue (probably of Poseidon) about seven metres high. on Spiritual Abuse | a valuable lighthouse for seekers of all traditions
The Sufi Lighthouse: Illuminating Spiritual Abuse is unique in the history of Sufi literature, a very timely and valuable contribution for seekers of all traditions. No religious or mystical tradition is immune from the presence of spiritual abuse, for, wherever there are people who are seeking to become closer to essential truths, purpose, and meaning, there will be individuals seeking to generate counterfeit currency to offer to those who are unaware of, or incautious toward, the dangers which lie in wait along the spiritual path. Spiritual abuse assumes many different forms.Spiritual abuse may occur in neighborhood churches, mosques, temples, centers, and other places of religious/spiritual gathering. This problem also may take place in much more exotic and/or remote settings. Some instances of spiritual abuse may involve gullible individuals who are induced to become committed to a ‘guide’ or teacher who, when examined even superficially in an impartial manner, may exhibit many

The Lighthouse: A Net Zero Carbon House
In the UK, various companies are building cutting-edge green homes as part of the Offsite 2007 Exhibition. Yesterday saw the official launch of a zero emissions house called the Lighthouse built by the Kingspan company. It will be the first home to meet the UK government environmental standard, level six of the Code of Sustainable Homes, which all new houses must meet by 2016. The home has a simple, barn-like form with a 40 degree pitched roof that includes solar panels and rainwater harvesting. The home also boasts high levels of thermal insulation, passive cooling and ventilation, biomass boilers and downstairs bedrooms. Biomass boilers run on organic fuels such as wood pellets and count as zero-emission because the amount of carbon dioxide they give off when they are burned is offset by the amount that was absorbed when the crop was grown. The house also has a waste separation system that allows combustible waste to be burned to help provide power. See a short video t

If I had to make a wish for one band to reform and start recording again, it would be for the indie British duo Lighthouse Family, who were active from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. I have such fond memories of playing their songs during my college days, especially their second album, Postcards from Heaven. Honestly speaking, this is a feel-good music in its purest form. The music sucks you in without realizing and you just can't help but listen to their songs over and over again. That's why I had a hard time picking out a song to feature on my blog. I have several favorites that are always there in my iPod (check out some of my recommendations at the end of this post). Finally, I've decided to feature a song from their latest album, called Whatever Gets You Through the Day. The song's titled (I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free. There are so many things to love about this song. First of all, the song deviates from the usual "love" subject int

[Copyright notice this is my stuff and carries with it jws blogprint] So after all the blame of his three friends, assuring Job that no one is punished unless they had it coming to them, and Job is unable to figure out why such horrible things are happening to him, he challenges God to speak already and show him what terrible thing he did to bring this punishment down upon him. So God speaks.  But His answer is not the account of sin that Job asked for… it is quite different.  First of all, God says, “Gird thyself up like a man.” (Job 38:3).  This pretty well shatters the effiminate image of a God who is all soft words and loving gestures.  God is love, no doubt, but God loves masculinity as well and at this point in time, Job needed to muster up every bit of manhood

PJ LightHouse & other sites with interesting pictures and stuff
Pretty busy these few days due to Real Life™, so here's a few sites to keep you busy in case I don't update that regularly these two weeks ;)Some of the interesting sites I discovered via mybloglog.com and clicking the Next Blog button on my Blogger navbar and elsewhere. Not so much about cool downloads per se but more about the incredible/crazy/silly things that happen in this crazy world of ours.PJ LightHouse's very diverse blog has a very nice art category with some really fascinating art. I really don't know how this guy manages to find such stuff :oSome articles from PJ Lighthouse on some amazing scupltures made from ordinary objects to get you started: Eiffel Tower sculpture from matchsticksPencil sculpturesEgg sculptures! Two other sites of a similiar nature but focusing more on photos of weird and wonderful stuff in world, are My Interesting Files and Esthera's World - Hangout For Fun. Both are regularly updated and well worth a visit if you're into this kind of stuff

I think it's ok as long as you have a good working knowledge of painting from life. Since I paint out so much, it's fairly easy for me to use photos and to add or subtract from the photo, what I don't need for the painting. You will need to decide what you want to focus on in the photo and leave out what is unimportant. The photo I used for the above painting had the lighthouse as part of the landscape, not as the focus. There was a lot of water in the photo and the lighthouse was pushed back and less important. I felt like the lighthouse should be the star of the painting , so I made a huge change in the importance, by making the water secondary. Don't get the idea that you are locked in to what the photographer wanted to feature. I often change things around to suit the painting. My

      Sequim Lighthouse
Sequim LighthouseAs this blog is not just referring to our life in Sequim but also is supposed to tell Sequim visitors about things to do and places to go, we are starting a few Sequim Sightseeing posts. One of our trips when on vacation in Sequim was a hike to the Dungeness Spit. It was quite foggy that day (at least by the ocean), so we were quite surprised to find other hikers and even kayakers taking off from the beach. We were not sure how many of the tourists who started their walk on the beach along the the Dungeness Spit in the direction to the Sequim Lighthouse ever made it. We are still planning on doing the 5-mile walk to the end of the Dungeness Spit and resting at the Lighthouse. Summer time will be the right time to go on the adventure. For now, let's share some information on the Lighthouse. First of all, the Lighthouse is still working because of the New Dungeness Light Station Association. Association members pay a 'keeper's fee' for an opportunity to live and work a

      Hawaii Lighthouse
This lighthouse ink and watercolor painting doesn't look very "Hawaiian" but it is. This view is in early morning just as the fog was clearing. I used a very wet-on-wet style on the shrubs and trees and more definition on the actual structure.

Le phare nous guide jusqu'à ses pieds, tout comme jadis, il guidait les marins. Le bord des falaises est tout près, il faut l'éviter à tout pris afin de ne pas faire de chute qui pourrait être fatale...

      San Diego Lighthouse
Anyone familiar with San Diego, California, is familiar with this beautiful old lighthouse. The structure is perched on a finger of land which is called Point Loma and views the Pacific Ocean to the west, and overlooks the city of San Diego, San Diego Bay, Mexico and the mountains to the east and south. At a height of 462 feet, it was once the highest functioning lighthouse in the nation and its light could be seen by ships far at sea. However, one major problem existed with the location of this structure which hindered its usefulness. The light's lofty perch meant it was often shrouded in fog, which rendered it useless to mariners. It is now preserved as an historical monument, is refurbished and looks monumental. If you like to feel alone, try walking around at this location when the fog is in. It is quiet, damp and very isolated-almost spooky.
