(CNN) — Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Connecticut, compared presumptive Republican nominee John McCain to a surprising figure on Sunday — Democratic icon John F. Kennedy. “I'm a Democrat who came to the party in the era of President John F. Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) further drove himself out of the graces of the Democratic Party when he endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Tuesday. Perhaps Lieberman was pushing them farther away in spite. Images of an irate, half-mad, Zeil Miller endorsing President Bush at the 2004 Republican National Convention come rushing back to me. The rarity of cross party endorsements in presidential elections is what makes this especially backstabbing. Lieberman has enraged Democrats over the past few years by refusing to go against the president on the Iraq war and a possible war with Iran. Lieberman has been a strong Bush supporter when it comes to the war in Iraq which cost him the Democratic nomination in Connecticut for U.S. Senate when he ran for re-election. Ned Lamont, who defeated Lieberman in the Democratic primary but lost to him when he ran as an Independent, criticized him for saying in 2006 that he wanted to elect a Democratic

The big story today is that Joe Lieberman is planning to announce an endorsement for John McCain tomorrow on the Today Show. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise as Lieberman already indicated that he might endorse a Republican who shared his views on Iraq. Perhaps Lieberman can even get McCain to take back his claim that the United States was founded as a Christian nation.
Lieberman and McCain do differ on a number of issues but supporting McCain as opposed to the other Republican candidates might make sense for a former Democrat who supports the war. McCain might be the least objectionable Republican candidate as at least he opposes torture, does not deny the problems created by climate change, has tangled with the religious right, and isn’t as xenophobic as many other Republicans on immigration.
It does show how pathetic the Republican choices are when a candidate can stand out for supporting compliance with the Geneva Conventions and not denying the consensus of scie

Joe Lieberman has been against the war from the beginning, but this is still a very damning statement against his former party:
No Democratic presidential primary candidate today speaks of America's moral or strategic responsibility to stand with the Iraqi people against the totalitarian forces of radical Islam, or of the consequences of handing a victory in Iraq to Al Qaeda and Iran. ... Democrats have remained emotionally invested in a narrative of defeat and retreat in Iraq, reluctant to acknowledge the progress we are now achieving, or even that progress has enabled us to begin drawing down our troops there.
Columnists George Will and William Buckley, conservative opponents of the war, have moved on to other subjects. Hillary Clinton has taken a sextagonal approach to the war (it varies from Michael Moore to Norman Podhoretz, depending on the audience). According to this article from thehill.com Senator Joe Lieberman is once again blasting the Democrats. This time it is on what he says is their naivity or unwillingness to use military force during tough times.
“I think either [Democrats] are, in my opinion, respectfully, naïve in thinking we can somehow defeat this enemy with talk, or they’re simply hesitant to use American power, including military power,” Lieberman said in a wide-ranging interview with The Hill.
“There is a very strong group within the party that I think doesn’t take the threat of Islamist terrorism seriously enough.”
This, in my opinion, is an understatement. Not only do they not think the threat of Islamo-fascists is real, they believe that George W Bush is the biggest threat to the world. They believe George W Bush is the worlds leading terrorist. Maybe the Democrat leadership doesn’t believe this, but their base does, and the leadership has to play to their base.

Collins have one of the chummiest across-the-aisle relationships in Congress.Which makes the following Lieberman swipe at Maine's junior senator all the more remarkable:Where we've seen failure is when the US government failed to plan projects carefully and then failed to keep a close watch over contractors and now we've seen billions of dollars wasted--a cost measured not just in dollars but in the undermining of the overall US mission in these war-torn countries.(Emphasis added.)Naturally, Lieberman wouldn't call it a swipe--he'd say he didn't mean to single out Collins. But let's be clear: When people talk about dismal-to-non-existent oversight of Iraq spending over the last four years, they're talking, in no small part, about the ineffectual tenure of Sen. Susan Collins as Homeland Security Committee chair.
A recent report from Time Magazine highlights the amount of power that Joe Lieberman now has due to the speculation surrounding the possibility that he may abandon his party for a party that seems to be more in line with his interests: the Republican Party.
According to the article, Lieberman has said that leaving the party is a “very remote possibility,” but the way recent events have played out seem to suggest that the idea is not far-fetched.
The main issue that distances him from the party is his position on Iraq. So far, Lieberman has been no less than 100% supportive of the Bush administration’s policy, which is a stance that doesn’t seem to have too much support, even from the Republicans.
It was his hawkish stance on Iraq that caused Lieberman to lose the Democratic nomination to Ned Lamont last year during his campaign for re-election in the Senate. Lieberman went on to win the election as an Independent. Upon being re-elected, he came back home t

I've always liked Joe Lieberman. Even when he was involved with AlGore I still respected him...for the most part. The one thing I was a bit uneasy about was the way he seemed to back off of what had always been his core issues. One might even say core values but I know how the left hates any intimation that they should have reasonable "values". Â I don't need to make a laundry list as I am sure most will realize what I mean. I can see Joe Lieberman switching parties. He's another person where the party has left him rather than him leaving the party. He will of course be thoroghly trashed by the left for daring to have a conscience and vote with his feet so to speak. I saw the way the moonbats pilloried Zell Miller for making his famous key note speech at the Republican '04 primary and would expect the same sort of vindictive and juvenille behavior from them again if and when Joe Lieberman does switch parties. Obviously this could mean a major power shift in control of the Senate as
Will Joe Lieberman come to the Republican side of the Seante??? Maybe, Maybe not. But he is still very distant to the Democrats. They threw him under the bus in the elections, and now are treating him as their best...
“I think we’ve got to start thinking about a war-on-terrorism tax,” Lieberman said during an Armed Services Committee hearing on Bush’s defense spending proposals. “I mean, people keep saying that we’re not asking sacrifices of anybody but our military in this war, and some civilians who are working on it.” Lieberman, an independent who usually votes Democratic, asserted that a war-on-terror tax would make it clearer to taxpayers how their money would be used.
First, I would like to say that the idea was proposed by Senator Joe Lieberman, not Smokin’ Joe Perhaps Lieberman is on to something. I could be in favor of fine tuning his proposal. We would have to make the entire budget for the War on Terror reliant on the new tax. The tax would require a public referendum for approval. If the public votes it down, the war would have to end. Also, the tax would only be good for one year and have to be voted u
Might Support Republican For President! Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2000 who won re-election as an independent last year, says he is open to supporting any party's White House nominee in 2008."I'm going to do what most independents and a lot of Democrats and Republicans in America do, which is to take a look at all the candidates and then in the end, regardless of party, decide who I think will be best for the future of our country," Lieberman said Sunday."So I'm open to supporting a Democrat, Republican or even an Independent, if there's a strong one. Stay tuned," said the three-term lawmaker who caucuses with Senate Democrats.Lieberman is an ally of GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a 2008 hopeful, and supports President Bush's new Iraq strategy. CQPolitics says that Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) no longer wants to be referred to as a “Democrat.”
For the past eight weeks, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman has asked to be called an Independent Democrat — "capital I, capital D," he even specified.
[…]
And yesterday, his office made clear that, if the compound modifier that the senator prefers was not going to take hold, then Lieberman's second choice is to be described as an Independent.
"There was a Democratic nominee, and he wasn't it," said Lieberman's new chief spokesman, Marshall Wittmann. "He still considers himself a Democrat, but the better reflection of his elected position is that he's an independent"
This is probably the first, and last, time but I agree with Marshall Whittmann. Lieberman is not a Democrat. Officially, he hasn’t since August when he lost to Ned Lamont in the Democratic Primary and jumped ship for the “Connecticut for Lieberman” party. However, b

John Orman, a political science professor that “bitterly protested” Senator Joe Lieberman’s switch from the Democratic Party to the “Connecticut for Lieberman” Party, has switched parties and elected himself chairman.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The party Sen. Joe Lieberman created to mount his independent re-election campaign has been seized by one of his critics, and the secretary of state’s office said Wednesday that it won’t challenge the takeover.
After the senator’s Nov. 7 victory under the Connecticut for Lieberman Party banner, John Orman switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Connecticut for Lieberman and voted himself chairman.
And don’t expect the party, under his leadership, to have a “big tent,” either.
Orman, a political science professor who ran briefly against Lieberman last year, said only critics, bloggers and anyone named Lieberman can join the party, which he said would
December 31 marks the end of the year.
Lieberman, the candidate, July ‘06 (Atrios with the transcript):
I am confident that the situation is improving enough on the ground that by the end of this year we will being to draw down significant numbers of American troops and by the end of next year more than half of the troops who are there now will be home.
12/3/06:
LIEBERMAN: … I must say, Bob, that the one thing he doesn't raise as a possibility is to increase the number of our troops there even though there's very broad criticism of Rumsfeld for having had too few American troops in Iraq after Saddam Hussein was overthrown. That may well be a critical part of the problems that we've been having lately. Incidentally, finally he makes a few suggestions such as embedding more Americans in Iraqi security forces which most people now think is a good idea and having more Americans on the border with Iran and Syria to stop the terrorists from coming in. You know, our military

The New Haven Register has an investigative piece into Joe Lieberman’s $387,000 in unaccounted petty cash disbursements from the last days of the August primary (h/t DeanFan84). The article raises serious questions about what this money went for, as well as what itemized disbursements for consultants who claim to have never received them mean. Not surprisingly, the Lieberman campaign has declined to answer these questions.
The Register article raises three serious potential violations of campaign finance laws. The one that most interests me is the possibility that the Lieberman campaign laundered money through their field consultants to convert it to street money.
Also, [Tom] Reyes and another man, Daryl Brooks of New Haven, who ran a consultant service, said they each got one check from the campaign for their services, but they are listed in the third quarter campaign finance report as getting two checks, for a total of twice what the men said they received.

Connecticut Bob interviewed Republican senate candidate Alan Schlesinger tonight and asked him about Joe’s $387,000 in unaccounted petty cash disbursements.

CT Bob: Senator Lieberman apparently went through $387,000 in petty cash during the twelve days preceding the primary. By comparison, Ned Lamont’s campaign recorded a total of $500 petty cash for the same period. No other senate campaign has recorded anywhere near the same amount of petty cash being essentially unaccounted for. What do you think may be going on here?
Schlesinger: “Well, it’s an awful lot of petty cash. It’s more than our whole
campaign in petty cash.
I’ll tell ya, it’s gotta be street money. I mean, it makes no other
sense.
I really thought the days of that were over, back in the early sixties,
but I guess not.
It’s unfortunate.”

I Remember When I Lost My Mind… for PowersandMorrison.com Saturday August 12, 2006.
This year the Democrats have a huge chance to win back the House and Senate. With the Democrats on the majority side of a major political issue, the failed war in Iraq, this can and will be the deciding factor for 2006.
I stopped by the GOP.com website just for laughs and came across this crappy flash animation on the front page. I made some screenshots and by the looks of it the Republicans are scared and they can smell a defeat:
First Shot: 15 Senate spots they think they might lose. HAHA!
Second: 21 Gubernatorial spots they think might slip…
Third: Oh Wow there’s that many GOP whackos in the country! Holy Crap they sure know how to photoshop in the color red!
But here comes the fear:
Could all be lost? No I’m afraid to say to you racists idiots, WILL BE LOST! Just wait and see how the Americans will
"Last month, after Lieberman told Democratic chief Sen. Harry Reid that he had "stopped attending the weekly Democratic lunch because he didn't feel comfortable discussing Iraq there, Reid offered to hold those discussions at another time. Lieberman has started attending again." But he also keeps in touch with Bush aide Stephen Hadley "every week or two."Lieberman is a prime example of what its like to be a Democrat that thinks independently. In the Republican party, if a member disagrees with his own, they don't shun him or make hasty efforts to destroy his campaign. In fact, the President supported many "moderates" for re-election.In the eyes of the Dems however, one disagreement or one attempt to disavow the party line and that Senator or Congressman is a case of damaged goods. All this liberal B.S. about "free thinking","creativity", or "free speech" is a bunch of crap.
To be honest, I never really like Joe Lieberman, even back in 2000. There was something about this guy that bugged me. Now I know what it is, the hypocrisy. Lieberman loves to call himself "the great independent" and he loves to argue how we should work in a "bipartisan" way. Meanwhile when a bipartisan resolution to oppose the troops escalation came to the floor, he voted against it. Lieberman says he "won't switch to the GOP" and will continue to caucus with the Democrats. Of course, cause if he doesn't, all the other Democrats will be united and half the Senate will vote the way the people want.Lieberman attacks the Democrats for wanting to "score partisan points" by opposing the President's plan, yet he caucuses with them. Now, yes, the Democrats do score partisan points initially and possibly long-term thanks to popular opinion, but remember why the Democrats won in 2006. They won because they were opposed to Bush, they won because the voters wanted someone to put pressure on t
Well, who doesn't? But Jonny's willingness to accept a Mercedes-engined Aston Martin highlights an important trend in upmarket automotive marketing: the end of mechanical snobbery. Yes, there are still brand purists who believe that the greasy bits' provenance is more important than a well-turned fender, a respected badge or comparative performance. That the connection between track and road is a holy one, whose realization establishes the brand's all-important bloodlines. But these engineering-savvy enthusiasts-- who were always a minority of any luxury or high-performance marque's buyers-- are a dying breed. Today's 30 or 40-something sports car buyer is likely to desire Nissan's GT-R because of its status as a Playstation plaything, rather than any racing glo
