      Can Licorice Treat Canker Sores?
Canker sores are a common oral condition that can cause severe mouth pain. According to a new study, they can be treated by an extract of licorice root. An examination of the effects of an over-the-counter medicated adhesive patch containing the extract showed that after seven days of treatment, ulcer size in the group who received the adhesive patch was significantly lower. Candy Review: Licorice Bridge Mix
One of my favorite licorice indulgences has always been Bridge Mix. When I opened this month’s Black and Red Licorice of the Month Club’s package, I was thrilled to find a nice little bag of Bridge Mix waiting for me. Now, I’ve never quite understood why this fun mix of various licorice candies is called a “Bridge” Mix. Does it involve the card game enjoyed by little old ladies worldwide, or does it have to do with the structure of the same name? If you know, tell us in the comments! Despite the mystery of the name, Bridge Mix is a wonderful way to enjoy different flavors and strengths of licorice in one convenient package. There are four different types of candies included - little pastel colored candy coated licorice bits, something that resembles a licorice button in white and black (and occasionally red), small black jellybeans, and drops coated with a multicolored mix of sugar balls. Pastel Licorice Bits: These candies definitely have the strongest

Candy Review: Black and Red Licorice Laces
Once again, it’s time for our monthly Licorice of the Month Club reviews. This time, the good folks over at Licorice International sent out some black licorice pipes which I’ve already reviewed (that didn’t stop me from loving them - again) and some red and black licorice laces. I have to admit that I wasn’t overly impressed with the red laces when I first tasted them. I found them very hard to chew and overall not really worth the effort. With that experience, I put off tasting the black for a later date. A few days later, I returned to the package and resolved to try again. I was so glad I did. The second time around, I started with the black. By the feel of the package, they were very soft and moist. Tasting bore out those observations, and my mouth was pleased with the soft, slightly salty, easy to chew licorice. If you’re after a less sweet, more salty licorice, this is the way to go. It’s not nearly as salty as the true Dutch salt licorice, b

Candy Review: Black and Red Licorice Piglets
My life continues to have meaning. Recently, I experienced the pain of realizing my subscription to the Licorice of the Month Club was about to run out. Luckily, the good folks over at Licorice International offered to enroll me in their Candy of the Month Club, which I gladly accepted. This month, I got to try out Black and Red Licorice Piglets. They are identical in shape and size, but obviously differ in color and flavor. In terms of texture, they are both relatively firm, which makes the hard edges a little uncomfortable to eat. The flavor of the black was nothing extraordinary. The licorice was very mild and slightly sweet, but the effort to chew the somewhat firm candy didn’t really make it worthwhile. The red was very similar and reminded me a lot of Twizzlers. For the record, that isn’t a good thing. The flavor was that typical “red” with no identifiable fruit basis. In general, I didn’t love these. With an overly firm, jagged texture, the effort

Real Deal on Weight Loss Herbs: Licorice and St. Johns Wort
This is the second installment of the Real Deal on Weight Loss Herbs. The first one is about dandelions and tamarind. Although licorice root will satisfy sweet cravings, it can interfere with heart medications, cause cardiac arrhythmia (or irregular heartbeat), and even result in a heart attack. Licorice root can also force the body to use up its stored potassium, which can lead to muscle pain or weakness. Another popular medication is St. John’s Wort, which purportedly raises one’s mood and keeps one from getting depressed. Depression often drives people to eat; so by controlling depression (or stress, which St. John’s Wort can also ease) this herb can allow you to lose weight, right? Despite this promise, however, St. John’s Wort is not often produced in good enough quality in over the counter medication. You also cannot take St. John’s Wort with red wine, yeast-based foods, or cheese, and you need to take it along with your meals to keep from getting an upset stomach. imag

Candy Review: Licorice, Gum, and Mints from Tundra Trading
When Tundra Trading recently sent us a box of their Finnish sweets to try, I was thrilled to try the licorice, but somewhat hesitant to experience the variety of xylitol-based confections included (given Brian’s experience with xylitol). Well, as it turns out, my expectations were turned completely upside down. Of the assortment, I tried first the red Tire Tread, having previously mentioned the black licorice version. The red is similar to the black, though a bit less sticky. The flavor is slightly fruity, but doesn’t bear any specific flavor reference. Overall, I enjoyed the red quite a bit and would definitely recommend it to fans of red licorice. Next up were two types of Tubi’s Organic Soft Licorice - one long rope and a bag of small chews. In every way except length, the two varieties were identical. Unfortunately, that means that I didn’t really enjoy either of them. I found the Tubi’s to be somewhat grainy and the texture to be unpleasant. The fl

Name That Candy: gummi cardboard and boxed licorice tubes
Believe it or not, I get 2 to 3 emails per week asking if I know what some long-lost candy from someone’s childhood is. Previously, I had been answering the ones I knew and posting a few of the ones I didn’t. From now on, I will collect all of these emails each week and post them on Monday in one “Name That Candy” post. So here are two from last week: Samantha M. writes: I’m seventeen. I remember a candy I used to eat when I was about eight or nine. I can’t remember what the package was made out of, but the candy itself was on a little thin cardboard thing. The candy was sort of gummy, and was made in a cool design that you could pull off the cardboard thing almost like long, string stickers. I don’t remember the colors, but for some reason I think each one may have been multicolored, and I think at least one kind of them was blue and red. I live in Minnesota, but I’m quite sure that it wasn’t only a local candy. I think th

Licorice Candy Review: Hint Mints and Chateau d’Lanz
This month’s Licorice of the Month Club selections included a couple of somewhat unique confections and a tasty old standby. I started with the Chateau D’Lanz Swiss Licorice. It comes in a pretty gold foil bag and is described as “The Ultimate Hard Licorice Drop.” I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the picture on the Licorice International website, I thought they would perhaps be similar to a softer drop but in a firm texture. However, I was mistaken. For one thing, the drops I received were completely squished down and stuck together. This may have been from melting, but I’m not entirely sure. I paid careful attention to the advice on the back of the package to “Suck, don’t chew!” and popped one in my mouth. Due to the strange shape, it wasn’t very comfortable, but I persevered. I quickly discovered that they were quite hard, but soon softened. However, they were extremely sticky and definitely posed a hazard to any loos

      Radicchio and Licorice Risotto
This dinner earned mixed results in my house. I didn't really care for it, but the husband thought it was awesome. (Figures!) I think I found the bitterness of the radicchio off-putting (though, I'll admit, it could have been the wine I used). I loved the risotto, and I even appreciated the licorice... but all together, in addition to the wine paired... didn't impress my taste buds. Dave

Candy Review: Jelly Belly Licorice Bears
Jelly Belly recently sent us a free bag of their new Licorice Bears to review, and I had the pleasure of sampling the delicacy. At first blush, I thought these bears would be like the Katjes Kinder I previously reviewed and didn’t enjoy. They looked very hard, but I figured I should give it a try, at least. Luckily, looks can be deceiving. They were firm, certainly, but very easily eaten, with a texture that softened quickly and made them easy on the teeth and jaw. The flavor was nothing extraordinary; while very good, they are clearly of an American recipe and a similar flavor can be found in many current candies. They are very sweet and lack the earthiness of a molasses-sweetened licorice, yet they should still strongly appeal to those of us who grew up on traditional American licorice flavors, which are normally sweetened by corn syrup or sugar. All in all, these little bears won’t exactly usher in a new age in licorice, but they are certainly tasty. At $5 a bag, howeve

Licorice Candy Review: Black Ace Licorice
May 7 was a very good day for yours truly. Not only was it my birthday, but my new computer arrived AND I got free licorice to try. Woot! This time I got to try Black Ace Licorice, both red and black. I was immediately intrigued by the letter which accompanied the samples. It mentioned that, due to being wheat and gluten-free, a higher concentration of licorice root extract has to be used. More licorice?? Great! I was also pleased to have the chance to review a product safe for the growing element of our population who may have a wheat allergy; a close family member of mine has celiac disease, so the subject is close to heart. I started with the box of black licorice, excited to find out what a wheat-free licorice tastes like. I was initially taken with the extremely soft texture, which was softer than any other licorice candy I’ve ever tasted. After a while, however, I found that a significant portion of the candy got stuck in my teeth. Despite that, the texture still wasn&rsq

      Licorice Candy Review: SNAPS
SNAPS are a retro candy that I didn’t know about until just a week or two ago. I was in Michael’s Arts and Crafts store and noticed it on the “retro” candy rack alongside Sugar Babies and Necco Slapsticks. “Oooooooo, what’s this?” I thought to myself as I picked up the package. It was definitely a retro candy with it’s bold and simple graphic design which consists of colorful illustrated representations of the candy inside spotting the bright red background. “Classic Chewy Candy” reads the tag line, but that doesn’t tell me what exactly SNAPS are. Turning the package over I finally find out what SNAPS are made of, literally. Ah, so it’s a black licorice with a candy coating! So how did I enjoy my first taste of SNAPS? I didn’t. The snaps themselves come in 4 colors: white, green, pink and orange red. The sizes are not uniform at all, some are tiny and others rather long. What first surprised me was that t

Candy Review: Kookaburra Licorice and Mini Pastels
On my return from a recent vacation, I was overjoyed to find April’s Licorice of the Month Club selections waiting for me. This month I got to enjoy Kookaburra black licorice and Mini Pastels. The month’s selections also included Licorice Toffee, but as I have mentioned before, my jaw simply is not up to the task of chewing such confections. A few months ago we received an extra bonus of Kookaburra black licorice, so I have already mentioned it before. However, this time the sample received was larger, so I was able to enjoy it more thoroughly. As before, I found that it had a wonderful, soft texture. The flavor is very sweet and mild - almost too mild. To my taste, it could have done with a bit more licorice flavor, though it certainly wasn’t objectionable. As a bonus, we received a small sample of Mini Pastels. These are somewhat reminiscent of Good & Plenty, though smaller and in a multitude of pastel colors. Their flavor is also much more subtle than Good &a

Licorice Candy Review: Gustaf’s Platinum Sweet and Licorice Dollars
Gustaf’s Platinum Sweet As many of you know, one of the highlights of my life is receiving my monthly selections from Licorice International’s Licorice of the Month Club. Sadly, this was not my month. This time around, we received Gustaf’s Platinum Sweet and Licorice Dollars. I started off with the Gustaf’s, but was immediately defeated by the firmness of the candy. Unfortunately, I have a bad jaw, and have had two surgeries (including one where they basically sawed through my upper jaw and reset it with two bone plates, which are still in there) as well as numerous other treatments to get me to the point where I am relatively stable. As such, I simply can’t chew candy that is too firm, and this fell into that category. The flavor I was able to taste from sucking seemed quite pleasant, with a nice sweetness, but I really wasn’t able to fully enjoy the candy. Still, I would recommend that those who like really really firm licorice give it a try; as

Candy Review: RJ’s Black Soft Natural Eating Licorice
During one of my recent attempts to find things to order with free shipping (I got hosed into Amazon’s Prime program), I stumbled across Amazon’s licorice section of groceries. Naturally, I was so happy I was nearly giddy. Yeah, ok, so I wasn’t really giddy. I don’t get giddy. I was pleased. After browsing through, I decided I should order a box of RJ’s Black Soft Natural Eating Licorice. For $15 I would be getting four 10.5 ounce bags. In general, Amazon’s prices are fairly good, especially if you don’t have to pay for shipping. Plus, with Prime I get two-day shipping, so I don’t have to wait weeks for my fix. When the box arrived, I eagerly dove in. As I ripped open the first bag, the sweet, wonderful smell of licorice drifted up to greet me. After the first bite, I realized I had found a winner. These are soft, smooth pieces of heaven. They are shaped as many typical licorice candy - solid tubes about two inches long. Their exterior i

Eat to the beat with licorice clothing
Photo by LYDNA FORREST/Dominion Post Unlike fellow Candy Addict Caitlin, I’m not a fan of licorice. My mind can never parse the idea that this stuff is meant to be candy. However, I can certainly appreciate when someone comes up with a creative use for the sweet, like this winner of a unique fashion show that took place in Hastings, New Zealand. The show contained outfits that were completely edible or recyclable. The idea for the winning dress came from a group of teenagers (naturally), and it was modeled by 15 year-old Saskia van Rijk. The costume included licorice bracelets, licorice earrings, a fake tongue bought from a joke store and the piece de resistance, a toffee guitar. “They said if we won, I had to break the guitar on the stage, so that’s what I did,” Saskia said. “It smashed really well. “ Rock on! She wins major points from me for the KISS homage too. Eat to the beat in edible fashions keywords: candy, sweets, licorice, clothing,

      Licorice as an aphrodisiac
dried licorice rootsLicorice (or liquorice) is the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, from which a sweet flavour can be extracted. The liquorice plant is a legume (related to beans and peas) and native to southern Europe, Middle East, and parts of Asia where it grows wild. It is a herbaceous perennial, growing to 1 metre in height, with pinnate leaves about 7–15 centimetres (3–6 inches) long, with 9–17 leaflets. The flowers are 0.8–1.2 cm (1/3 to 1/2 inch) long, purple to pale whitish blue, produced in a loose inflorescence. The fruit is an oblong pod, 2–3 centimetres (about 1 inch) long, containing several seeds.Licorice gets its name from the Greek glyks, meaning “sweet” and rhiza meaning “root”. It is the sweet tasting rhizomes (underground stems) and roots that are used as flavorings. Licorice is mentioned in the Hippocratic texts, and to the Romans, who made licorice extract as we do today. Ancient Chinese herbalists used licorice, distilling the root’s essence and pr

Licorice Candy Review: Kokindjes, Sweet Finnish Licorice, and Kookaburra Allsorts
Kokindjes My reason to live arrived a few days ago. No, I didn’t find a boyfriend; my Licorice of the Month Club selections arrived! By now, you all know how much I love my monthly licorice delivery. This month we got Sweet Finnish Licorice, Kokindjes from Holland, and Kookaburra Allsorts from Australia as a bonus. I tried the Kokindjes first, not sure if I would like them. I was worried they would be some hideous, unsweetened thing, but in fact they were very good. They are the size of small gumdrops, and are very soft. Their flavor is interesting, as it is both salty and sweet at the same time. They are certainly a departure from typical American licorice flavor, but they were still really good. Sweet Finnish Licorice Next up was the Sweet Finnish Licorice. These were short lengths of solid tubular licorice. They were a bit harder than I prefer; with a rather weak jaw, they were kind of hard to chew. Still, they were a nice flavor, with mild sweetness but plenty of licorice
