      Leukemia 101
Luekemia is a cancer (malignant disease) of the blood or 'bone marrow', (soft tissue found in the hollow interior of the bone.) It is characterized by the uncontrolled accretion of blood cells, usually white blood cells. The word Luekemia means "white blood", which was derived by luekemia patients' high white blood count. An excessive amount of cells can interfere with other cells which causes a very harmful imbalance of blood count. There are four different categories of luekemia:* Acute Lymphocytic Luekemia (ALL): This type of Luekemia is a rapidly progressing disease that is the most common type of Luekemia for children. However it does occur in adults, especially those over 65 years of age.* Chronic Lymphocytic Luekemia (CLL): This type of luekemia (chronic) progresses more slowly than

      How Is Leukemia Treated?
Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. There are two types of leukemia, chronic and acute, which are treated differently and have different symptoms. Acute leukemia rapidly progresses and needs immediate, aggressive treatment. Chronic leukemia can take months or years to show symptoms and may not need immediate treatment but will require ongoing monitoring. Chemotherapy utilizes chemicals to treat the cancer. It causes many side effects such as hair loss, nausea and decline of the immune system. The complete course of therapy can be from two to five years including maintenance. This is the most common form of treatment for leukemia with the desired result being total remission. Even without symptoms, ongoing monitoring must occur to guard against relapse.Radia

      A Crash Course On Leukemia
This morning, I was able to be of service to JS, a 29 year-old father of three. He looked fairly healthy and if I saw him on another setting, I wouldn’t have known that he’s afflicted with a potentially life-threatening disease. But JS was not here to ask what disease he has. He knows what he’s up against and he’s been fighting it since last year. 4 years PTC – The patient noted the appearance of pin-point rash-like lesions on the volar aspect of the forearm and anterior thigh. The lesions appeared spontaneously without precipitating factors. The lesions became migratory, increasing in size and resembled hematoma. They resolved without any intervention and consult. No fatigue, weight loss or loss of consciousness was noted. 2 years PTC – The patient noted a growing abdominal mass on the left flank. The mass was non-tender, firm and wood-like in consistency. Early satiety, anorexia, weight loss, palpitations and gum bleeding were also noted. 14 months PTC

Antioxidants found to be Leukemia Killer
A recent scientific study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh's medical wing found that antioxidants in red wine as well as numerous fruits and veggies kill leukemia cells. This comes as good news to anyone suffering from the debilitating cancerous disease because as of now the best treatment comes only from chemotherapy. The downside, health wise to chemo is the radiation that kills both good and bad cells. Vitamins in fruits like black raspberries have compounds in them that help ward off bad leukemia cells. Doctors hope to take the compounds found in these natural substances and begin to test them on animals and then hopefully people. As of yet, no toxic effects have been discovered in the antioxidant compounds found in red wine or fruits/vegetables.

However Bill Walsh, a member of the hall of fame, three time Superbowl champion, and one of the greatest coaches of all time, loses his fight with leukemia at the age of 75 today and I could not find any mention of him on IGN, 1up, or Gamespot.
