      Eat Your Letters
(Okay, I give up, no one is going to the wordpress blog, so I'll keep posting to this one in addition to that one. Sheesh!)We stopped getting the daily paper sometime last year shortly after we figured out that, if we didn’t cut expenses, we’d be using newspapers for fuel thanks to the rising cost of oil. Now, I buy one when the mood strikes me as it did yesterday. I’ve always read most of the paper, but now that I only get one once in awhile, I find myself reading all of the paper, right down to the legal notices and police blotter. (But not, of course, The Phantom cartoon strip. Why is the racist thing still in the paper? But, I digress.) Yesterday, there were two things that struck me. In the police blotter, there was a paragraph about a young man who had held up a grocery store

      Resignation Letters: Keep it Simple!
Mary J. Blige sang it best, when she blurted out…No More Drama! The same is true with resignation letters. If you're resigning because of race-based discrimination, harassment, and/or retaliation (constructive termination), you've probably already had more drama than you can stand. So, try not to be highly emotional, when you’re writing your resignation letter! Yes, you may be justified in being upset or angry, etc. However, those legitimate emotions can be twisted by your employer and can be used against you in the future. Remember, your official resignation is in writing. Therefore, it can come back to haunt you. So, choose your words carefully. Here are some tips:--don’t forget to include the effective date of your resignation;--give 2 weeks notice—unless there are extenuating c

Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam (Accademy Award 1989)
Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam is a documentary based on the book which printed letters from the soldiers and nurses who served in Vietnam. This movie is so powerful precisely because it is so simple. Using real letters written by US soldiers and archive footage, the film creates a highly personal experience of the Vietnam War.An intensely moving and disturbing experience. It shows a more human story of the war than we see in most media outlets and reveal real people in real situations trying to explain or understand. It has no plot except that thousands of young men went to a faraway country and had unspeakable experiences there, and many of them died or were wounded for life in body or soul. You can buy Dear America - Letters Home from Vietnam.

      The "Billy" Letters
In the late '90s, pop-culture historian Bill Geerhart had a little too much time on his hands and a surfeit of stamps. So, for his own entertainment, the then-unemployed thirtysomething launched a letter-writing campaign to some of the most powerful and infamous figures in America, posing as a curious 10-year-old named Billy. What better mentor for a 10-year-old than Charles Manson? Little Billy seeks life advice, and America's most notorious killers are happy to oblige....SPECIAL DELIVERY Geerhart as an actual 10-year-old; the original envelope he received from pen pal Charles MansonAs it turns out, no group hates to disappoint a child more than convicted killers, all of whom responded promptly to Billy's questions about dropping out of school. Congressional Letters
I have a couple of posts I'm working on for this weekend, but in the meantime, Kyle recommended that I repost a comment I left at CFLF.Anyways, the context of this is as follows: Kyle, justifiably outraged at the collective yawn that occured in the wake of the revelations that President Bush personally approved torture, sent his local (Republican) congresswoman a letter in connection with an ACLU letter-writing campaign. He was shocked when he received a response back, apparently bearing the signature of the congresswoman herself. Then he read the letter, which not surprisingly amounted to a non-responsive response. Then he fact-checked some of the claims in the letter. Somewhat surprisingly, he found that the underlying facts for the claims in the Congresswoman's letter were, uhh, inc

This problem is solved by simply holding the ALT key down while typing the letters in the phone application. You can even add numbers to your address book this way for speed dialing! This is a concession to AIDS and the fact that many people are not real excited about doing the breathing. I can understand. It is certainly not tops on my list of fun things to do.They are now also emphasizing using the new Automatic External Defibrillators (AED). I got to learn how to use them. Map drive letters to local folders in Windows XP

Wouldn't it be nice if you could map a drive letter to a nested folder on your hard disk? Then, you could access nested subfolders just as easily as you can access shared folders on the network. Fortunately, you can do just that. Letters From Your Friendly Cashier: Vol 27
Dear Empathetic Customers, The last thing I want to do is discuss my finger anymore. But after such an outpouring of concern on your part, I felt that if I were to ignore the fact that you cared so much, I would be remiss. And very unfriendly. And as diverse as you all seem to be, you taught me a few things about how to ask people about their injuries. Did you guys all go to the same social

River: The Joni Letters (with Bonus Tracks) - SPECIAL EDITION
Editorial Reviews Amazon.com On paper, River sounds like a match made in several versions of heaven. Legendary pianist Herbie Hancock re-imagines Joni Mitchell with his hand-picked, star-studded band--including saxophonist Wayne Shorter--in tow. Luminary guests lend vocals to a song apiece: Norah Jones ("Court and Spark"), Tina Turner ("Edith and the Kingpin"), Corinne Bailey Rae ("River"), Luciana Souza ("Amelia"), Leonard Cohen (with an unsettlingly sanguine version of "The Jungle Line"), even Mitchell herself ("Tea Leaf Prophecy").In the event, though, a few fundamental elements go awry. Hancock plays with almost saccharine understatement throughout, and even Shorter's seminal "Nefertiti" and Duke Ellington's "Solitude" fall into the album's presiding, somnolent surface, t

Failure to spread the letters will be cursed.Chain letters started long before emerging of the internet. During that time, it was very inconvenient to circulate the chain letters since the main media was through posting of letters, which required photocopying of the letter before you drop it into other people’s mailbox. Since chain letters used to be scarce, it seemed to be more mysterious and receivers were more frightened and had higher chance to

Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters
This book (edited by Jon Lellenberg, Daniel Stashower and Charles Foley, and published by Harper Press ISBN: 978-0-00-724759-2) contains letters written by Conan Doyle to, for the most part, his mother from when he was a small child away at school until shortly before his death. It does exactly as the title suggests, it lays his life out in front of you and, as a result, I feel that I know the writer intimately. And that word is very important, as these are intimate letters. These are not grandstanding letters written for publication in newspapers to express some important point about the events of the times, although Conan Doyle had strong views about a number of things and was not shy about expressing them publicly, at one point leading to a bit of a telling off from the army. These lett
