Back in the day, when I was still an amateur bather, I discovered aromatherapy. I would go to the herb store and buy those bottles of 100% pure essential oils. Some of them I could buy a little larger than others because they were used more frequently. I decided to buy a large bottle of Lavender. I've been continuing to experiment with loose approaches to flowers, using lots of water, and as part of this have produced a few studies of lavender. Here are a couple. They're not really loose and watery enough, now I come to look at them again. Ingredients: 2 cups grated soap 1/2 cup water 6 vitamin E capsules 1 T. ground dried lemon verbena leaves 1 T. dried lavender buds 10 drops lavender oil 20 drops sweet orange oil Steps: Melt soap with water. After it has melted, add vitamin E oil and remaining ingredients. After the soap has cooled and thickened, scoop out a small handful of the soap and roll into a ball. Flatten the ball to create a disk shape. As the soap cures, press the soap into a firmer and smoother shape. If you like, mix a little orange oil on your hands and polish the soap smooth. This soap will discolor if the lavender buds are added too soon to the melted soap. If you do not like the rough surface and the darkened color, omit the lavender buds and add extra lavender oil. Or, after a week of curing, you can slice thin shavings from the soap to smooth it and remove any dark patches.

Yesterday we did a full day of sightseeing upcountry Maui with our house guests. We're another step closer to getting our new hedge in the ground (for new readers this is why) as I have now taken a heap of softwood cuttings - more than we actually need - and stored them in the shadehouse. The plan is that these will develop roots over the winter months and hopefully we should be able to repot them into individual containers by spring. With this time delay we probably won't be putting these in the ground until Spring 2008 which leaves the garden bed barren until then. However, we will most likely opt for some flowering annuals just to fill the beds this season. I’d been having trouble sleeping lately. I’m not quite sure why, but I don’t seem to be getting a good night’s sleep as I should, which is affecting my mood in the day, and productivity at work. After 2 weeks of looking like a panda, with dark circles under my eyes, I was ready to throw in the towel. Then, I remembered something I used to do to help me sleep. I’d burn some lavender oil in an aromatherapy pot. The smell of lavender relaxes me, and in time, I’m just slumbering, as I ought. It works a treat! Lavender Oil is distilled from the lavender flower, and the musky smell is rather distinct. Some people call it the old lady smell as they associate it with little old ladies who use it liberally.
