      Vargas-Mayorga: Fernando's Last Stand - EastsideBoxing.com
24.08.07 - By John Howard: I was invited to Valencia, CA, last week to watch “Ferocious” Fernando Vargas train for his upcoming fight with Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga. Vargas 26-4 (22 KO’s) will fight Mayorga 26-6-1 (23 KO’s) on September 8th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. This will be Vargas’ last fight in a ten year career. And what a career it has been! A roller coaster ride that started with his pro-debut back in ‘97, and his first world title in 1998, knocking out Yori Boy more…

      Cindy Sheehan's Last Stand
Lauded by the left and loathed by the right, Cindy Sheehan has decided to pack her bags and go home, ending a nearly three-year long protest to end the Iraq war. In the wake of the Iraq funding battle in which the Democrats decided to give the President money for the war, Sheehan, frustrated, gave up and headed home.I had always found myself defending Cindy Sheehan, even as I shook my head in disbelief at her actions sometimes. Every time I'd consider turning my back on her, I was reminded of my mother, who once told me she wouldn't know how she'd respond if I joined the military and died in Iraq and it's very likely she might stand next to Cindy at Camp Casey. I am, after all, her only son and only child. I cut Cindy some slack, as a mother who lost her son in a war she opposed and kept quiet, even after her son died until she couldn't take it anymore. She exemplified what's so great about America; a patriot, standing up for what she believed in, even in the face of strong oppos

      Merbau's last stand
A new Greenpeace report reveals how the rare tree species, merbau, has been severely depleted. What remains is at high risk of extinction in the wild.Merbau was once plentiful but today exists in significant commercial quantities only on the island of New Guinea. The logging industry has set its sights on these last stands. Last month, the Australian government proposed a global fund to deal with illegal logging in Indonesia. This map also shows the trade routes of merbau from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (in full animation mode, click on the Navigation button and select Trade Flow).Merbau is rare and slow-growing, taking 75 years to reach commercial size. One hectare of its range may contain only one tree. At the current rate of officially sanctioned logging, most of the remaining merbau will be gone within the next 35 years (as this is the official rotation cycle for logging). However, this figure doesn’t even take into account illegal logging of this very profitable timber.

      Rove's Last Stand?
Newly revealed White House e-mails show President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, and then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales were involved in discussions of a shakeup of U.S. attorneys before Gonzales became attorney general.Well this certainly doesn't paint a pretty picture for Gonzales, but it's interesting to see Karl Rove's name implicated in this. Although, he's probably implicated in every White House scandal we'll see from this administration. What's also interesting is WHEN all this occurred...January 9, 2005, when President Bush was riding high after his reelection, the Republicans had what they thought was a tight hold on both houses of Congress, and Karl Rove was the Reigning Emperor of American Politics. Rove discussed the firing of all 93 federal prosecutors at the time, which after Bush's reelection would've only created a whimper of protest. (See that's the time to do it, not the week after your party looses Congress.)More on Rove; The Justice Departm

Real WiMax: Sprint's Last Stand (S)(VZ)
WiMax seems to some investors like a mirage. Out there in the future there will be a broadband signal that can blanket entires cities. Wide pipe for everyone. Democracy at work. Well, if you stop into South Korea, it is really going on. Samsung has just released a device that can act as a computer and a phone, using a WiMax signal to feed it. The new gadget can even get TV. Of course, Samsung is not some wacky start-up that is trying to peddle new technology to the world. And, it is headquartered in a market where the government plans to offer WiMax throughout Seoul by the end of next year. Samsung is one of the big backers of WiMax, along with Intel and Motorola. All three companies think there are big bucks in selling WiMax-enable handsets and infrastructure hardware to make WiMax systems work. All of this is hopeful news for Sprint, the gang-that-couldn't-shot-straight cellular company that competes with Verizon Wireless and Cingular in the US market. Sprint's integration with Nex
