      More Rain in Laredo
"Rain, Rain, We like rain. All the plants are glad you came."Our Creatures in My Backyard camps have been exploring the world of plants this week. We've been little seeds, snug in the ground. We've been climbing in tall, tall trees. We explored musical instruments that sound like rain.We danced like plants in the wind and the sunshine. We even made a musical rain storm and felt real drops of rain on our hands. And, at the end, we had fun digging in the dirt and planting our own seeds to take home.Noah, of course, just had to dance in the rain after class yesterday.

Sir Douglas Quintet - Nuevo Laredo (1970)
Sir Douglas Quintet was a rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Despite their British sounding name, they came out of San Antonio, Texas and are perhaps best known for their 1965 hit single, the 12-bar blues "She's About A Mover". With a pulsating organ riff provided by Augie Meyers and soulful vocals from lead singer and guitarist Doug Sahm, the track features a Tex-Mex sound. Other influences came in from blues, jazz, and contemporary rock. The band soon joined the late-'60s explorations of expanded rock-music potentials. In addition to "She's About a Mover," the band is known for its songs "Mendocino," "Dynamite Woman" and "Can You Dig My Vibrations?"StyleThe Sir Douglas Quintet is considered a pioneering influence in the history of rock and roll for incorporating Tex-Mex and Cajun styles into rock music. However, early influences on the band's emerging Texas style included ethnic and pop music from the 1950s and 1960s, such as doo-wop, electric blues, soul music, a

Fun for Children (And Parents!) in Laredo
Have you visited the Imaginarium yet? If not, you are missing a real treat. The Imaginarium of South Texas (formerly known as the Laredo Children's Museum) is dedicated to providing "bicultural exhibits in a creative learning environment." What that translates to is a place for children to explore the world around them, in an friendly environment that naturally invites that exploration. It's a place for children to play, yes, but more than that, it's a place for children learn through play.Located in Mall del Norte next to Dillards, while larger facilities are being constructed on the campus of Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), the Imaginarium includes a grocery store pretend play area, a magnet wall, a giant bubble table, a well-stocked reading area, and many other exhibits. And, don't forget the Imaginarium hosts wonderful summer camps for children 5-12 years old. (Visit their website for the latest details and information about hours and memberships.)

      New to Laredo?
Have you heard of the Newcomers and Friends of Laredo Club?Neither had I when we first moved to Laredo. In our first Kindermusik class, I met several ladies that were members of this club. Noah and I started attending playgroup events (play days at playgrounds, Christmas and 4th of July parties, field trips) and made lots of friends. Even though we've lived in Laredo for more than six years now, we still enjoy being a part of Newcomers.Newcomers and Friends of Laredo is a social club comprised of new residents as well as Laredoans. There are a number of activities planned each month, including: monthly Luncheons with community speakers, Adult Socials, Family Socials, Coffees sponsored by local businesses, Bunco, Bridge, Canasta, Cooking demonstrations and recipe sharing, Scrapbooking, Golf, Bowling, Children's Play Group, Babysitting Co-op, and Moms' Night Out. Getting together and making new friends makes the adjustment much easier and more enjoyable. For more information, call 956-75
