It's a big change, moving from an apartment into a house. For one thing, you get to celebrate things like Halloween in a completely different way. Well, Halloween is almost upon us and time for a challenge. Several week ago, Muse from Xanadu and I agreed to a challenge to carve a pumpkin for Halloween and to reveal our attempts on our Blogs. Well, here is mine... There is a national shortage of pumpkins here in the UK, due to the awful weather that we have experienced this year. Because of this, my pumpkin was rather small (well, they do say size doesn't matter!).My first task was to chop the top off...Then to sccop the flesh and seeds out...Making sure that everything is removed...Then the best bit, the design. I started with a blank sheet of A4 paper......folded it half and began to draw half a face...Once the first half face was completed, I folded the paper the opposite way and traced the image. This is so, when opening the paper to the full page again, I could copy the image over to the other side of the page to get an 'even' looking face.The last stage was to roughly cut out the design and pin it to the pumpkin. The other day I told you about the jack-o-lantern in The Dark Knight viral website whySoSerious.com. The pumpkin has a huge bat symbol grin which seemed to be reminiscent of the popular Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale graphic novel The Long Halloween.
We wondered if this was a clue we’d be getting a Dark Knight treat at Halloween.
Well it seems that the poor old pumpkin is feeling a little worse for wear. The jack-o-lantern’s candle is slowly burning down and looks set to go out any time soon. Not only that, the jack-o-lantern is beginning to break and rot but only on one side of the pumpkin’s face. Two-Face anyone? We think so.

Ok, now this is just filler. They held out with original material for a while, but the symptoms of a crossover will always, eventually manifest. Plus, there were like, five artists? I had been pleasantly surprised by the last two issues, but now I'm looking forward to the end of the Sinestro Corps war so I can drop this like a bad habit.
Take a closer look at this lantern, and you will see what it is really made of. The effect of the paint and shiny surfaces make for a great combination of style and design. If you take a look at a tin can especially drinks cans, they have such great colours and designs that it would look good in any recycled object.
All that is needed is a little tea light candle placed inside and the lights and shadows that are given off are simply great.

This is Ricsson’s Lantern. He had learned how to make this lantern during his art lesson in school. Mooncake Festivals, also called Lantern Festivals and Mid-Autumn Festivals, will be on 25 September 2007, coming soon next Tuesday. Ricsson is very excited about it. He was asking if we can go downstairs on that day. The children love to eat mooncakes. After Mooncake Festivals, there will not be anymore mooncakes. They would need to wait for another year. Most of Emerald Dawn is really lousy, which is too bad, because the space stuff is fun. The stuff on earth, all the lame Hal Jordan gets drunk, crashes a car with his friends in it, goes to jail--it's beyond terrible. The space stuff isn't exactly well-written. Gerard Jones's dialogue is terrible, whereas Priest's dialogue in the first issue was just bad. But it's space stuff and it's fun and trippy at times. The most interesting part, Hal Jordan's training on Oa is skimmed over. We see his training, but we don't get to see him meet people... He never feels like an Earthman on a fantastic adventure, he just seems like a function of the plot. No depth, no texture, no nothing.Keith Giffen's terrible plot is something special, because who wants to read a comic book about the Hal Jordan presented in Emerald Dawn? On Memorial Day, over 1300 candle-lit lanterns made of wood or paper was launched from the shores of Ala Moana Beach Park by family members paying their respects to their ancestors. During this Toro-Nagashi, or “lantern offerings on the water,” lanterns are individually set afloat on the ocean and are said to ferry spirits “from the shore of delusion to the shore of salvation.”

May 24th was Buddha's birthday, and in celebration it was a holiday in Seoul (which meant a day off for us from work). The Lotus Lantern Festival is an annual event leading up to Buddha's birthday. After meeting the authors of The Korean Way of Tea we walked the short distance to the Jogyesa temple. It was colourfully decorated with thousands of lanterns for Buddha's birthday celebrations.These small children drew a lot of attention, they look so grown up in their buddhist monk's robes, but they were still very playful.There were two parades during the weekend festival. He's trying to make it seem as if he's got connections to some kind of lord out there, and that by telling some great stories, he can win a get-out-of-jail-free card. Chinese New Year is around the corner. Thought it would be nice to do some Chinese New Year Craft with my boy. I help out quite a bit here because he get bore of repetitive work. Sigh!This is the very basic of the lantern done with Ang Pao. Outcome is nice.Materials needed:12 Ang Paos for the lantern (we are using square ones so it looks nicer)1 Ang Pao for the lantern decorationDouble-sided tapeStringHow to do it:Fold 4 corners of the 12 Ang Paos inwards covering the picture. (It will look like a smaller square now)Join top right with top left corner using double sided tape to secure. It will take 4 Ang Paos to do this.Repeat the above steps so you have 2 sets; 1 for bottom and 1 for the top.To do the middle part, join top right corner of (base) Ang Bao on the left with bottom right corner of a new Ang Pao. Then join top left corner of (base) Ang Pao on the right with bottom left corner of the same Ang Pao. (confusing huh? ;P)Repeat till 4 Ang Paos are secure with the base.Now stick t

When I was walking back home from town today an odd line of reflection occurred to me.When I was in junior school and DC comics were the must-have collectable of the pre-teen boys, my favourite hero was Green Lantern. I collected the Green Lantern comics, and there was just one shop in town that sold them. Sadly I must have got rid of them years and years ago - they'd probably be quite collectable now.It struck me as I walked along how there was a sort of parallel between the Green Lantern vow/oath (each Green Lantern on their respective worlds could choose their own vow) and the Vows of Bodhisattvas within Mahayana Buddhism.It then struck me that my own affinity to Amoghasiddhi was perhaps a continuation of my original attraction to Green Lantern - or perhaps they are both expressions of something that pre-dates them both and which I have yet to remember. Unlike Amida whose vow is famous (and the basis of all Pure Land practice) I don't think Amoghasiddhi is particularly renowned
