Wayne White takes old thrift store paintings and jazzes them up with his own embellishments - namely words. I guess that saying that "a picture paints a thousand words" is true when it comes to his cool paintings. The former Pee Wee's playhouse set designer turns his second hand finds into beautiful funky landscapes that are definitely a little kitschy, a little funny and ALOT strange. What made h

I would like to credit the authors but can't remember which sites I researched. Titanium White - titanium dioxide (oxide)Reflects 97.5% of all available light. The most opaque white, perfect choice for direct painting but difficult for color mixing because it takes so much color to tint Titanium. Titanium is completely inert, does not change by aging or normal chemical action, but it does require more oil to grind than other whites and can show some yellowing because of the darkening of linseed oil when it dries. It does not dry very quickly and is more Zinc white in this respect. Titanium

You need to take the time off from your regular painting schedule and have separate time to read and paint for learning. There are a couple of good ways to do this. Some painters do some study first thing in the day, when they arrive at the studio or on location. The have a plan or an exercise ready to start and they use it as a way to warm up before serious painting time.Another method is to take longer periods of time like weeks or months to study and research; an in studio artist residency or retreat if you will, taking yourself out of your usual studio routine. I use both methods. I like to do a lot of exercises before I teach work

I also sit at a work table and use them. I have two boxes, one for acrylic or gouache, and the other for oils. I keep them both set up and ready to use at all times. I always have two sets of every medium and brushes, one for in studio and one for in my car studio. It makes life so much easier for me. So many landscape painters have fallen into the trap of believing that alla prima or plein air is some sort of magic. To me plein air painting is simply a useful tool in helping to create a good painting. There is nothing magical about it. I believe that getting the best painting is the goal. If I start a painting on location but can't finish it there, because of time constraints, weather, wind, heat or any number of reasons; I can finish the painting in my studio and improve it. That is the goal for me. I don't market my work as either plein air or studio really, since I do both. I find that my patrons really have no interest in whether the painting is pur

What you need is a plan before you begin. Think about what drew you to the scene and rely on that for the theme of your paintng. Let go of all but the main elements and rank them by importance. Keep the number small and think, main element, secondary elements, tertiary elements. How will you lead the viewer through the painting to rest on these elements? What paths will you create to lead the viewer? Will you use values in such a way as to establish paterns or paths? Will you allow a dominant value in the painti

Some painters make a science of it, being very precise, others keep it minimal with simple streaks across the water in a side to side motion. My method is simple. I am not a realist painter and so I approach landscape painting from a design perspective rather than trying to copy nature. I like to lay in the basic elements of the reflection, trees, color masses and so forth, early in the painting. Then I will ignore the water for some time while I work on the land masses. I save the water for last, using a semi abstract method to apply the paint. I like to use diagonals and curves to leave motion on th

I can think that I am paying attention to what I'm listening to when suddenly, something that is said will stand out in high relief and I'll recall most of whatever else I heard as "blah, blah, blah." What struck me most about what Edward Burtynsky says on this clip is that when he started taking photos of mines and such twenty-five years ago, he did not fully understand why he was taking the photos, he just felt compelled to make them. That's how I feel about the landscapes I'm painting now. When I started painting them a year and a half ago, I did not understand what I was doing but I was compelled to paint them. I have a slightly better understanding now of what I'm doing and where I may be headed but I can tell that the seeds of what I started with will take a while to fully flow

One of my most favorite images in Medieval painting is the hand of god reaching down out of the clouds. In certain paintings, there even appear to be flying saucers (actually, I think that's what the object looks like in the above featured icon from which the hand of God reaches). Atmospheric perspective is an important aspect of landscape painting because it expresses spatial depth in your painting. Think of your painting as having three major planes, foreground, middleground and background. As objects diminish in the distance, their tones shapes and colors become more and more muted because there are minute particles of dust and other objects in the air between your eyes and the objects. That is why a landscape painting with all hard crisp detail looks amateurish. I still continue to be impressed with the way the Chroma Interactive Acrylics perform. I had a field day this morning finalizing the sky with glaze after glaze and a significant amount of scumbling thrown in for good measure. It would have taken

They are high contrast and full of light. I think that is the consistency of my work, light and contrast. Here are elements of light:Light Source- Where is the light on an object coming from? It can be from several sources, including direct light from the sun as well as ambient light. It can be diffused or focused, bright or dim. It's position and intensity can effect the appearance and the mood of a painting.Highlight- The brightest point of light on an object. It is found in the middle of

      Norwegian Fjords' Beautiful Landscapes
In those places where cold is very intense, the ice that was formed in winter is not melted in summer. So the ice accumulates in the mountains in big amounts. Its own weight makes this ice roll down the mountain, like true ice rivers. This is called a glacier.Sometimes this glacier continues advancing towards the valleys nearby to the sea. These glaciers, by their own strength, dig the earth on their way, until they reach the sea. Salt water melts these ice rivers. When the entire glacier gets melted, results in a valley flooded by water, surrounded by mountains that are incredibly sculpted with awesome shapes. This is called a fjord. In Norway there are many fjords. In fact, it has the second biggest fjord in the world: Sognefjord. This one reaches a maximum depth of 4,291 ft under the sea level. Some Norwegian fjords are so rough and dangerous that the Norwegians needed to tie their livestock to avoid them falling to the abyss accidentally. The lands that surround the fjords are very fert

Book Review: Beautiful Landscapes by Diane Wright
Diane Wright (2007) Beautiful Landscapes. Walter Foster. It's the last day of October, so just time for one last Big Draw Book Review. This will be a quick one, but as I've only just received the book from Amazon, I can't resist it.Diane Wright is an extremely accomplished graphite artist, rather in the mold of Mike Sibley, the subject of my previous review. Indeed, Diane is a great admirer of Mike's work, and considers him to be her mentor. Therefore, the style of work shown in the two books is very similar. However, Diane's book is a very slim volume, just 64 pages, and can be picked up very cheaply ($9.95 direct from her web site). In a sense, then, it is an "entry-level" version of Sibley's book, though this description doesn't give Diane enough credit as a fine artist in her own right. As the title indicates, this book focusses entirely on landscape drawing. The first part of the book is devoted to drawing major landscape elements, with particular emphasis on trees.

      Landscapes Are Forever
I absolutely love art. Ask me I'll tell you; Art makes the world go round. It brightens walls, provokes thought, pronounces decor and really is the window to a persons soul if you view the art they collect whether it be fine paintings or handcrafted art such as sculptures, basketry, pottery etc. One of my favorite art forms is landscape paintings, especially if I am familiar with the location.

Palms8x10 inchesacrylic on panelSee my paintings HEREArt Notes Blog HEREPainters TipValues In ColorWe do frequent value studies in black and white to understand how values work but what about translating them to color? Here is a simple exercise to do that with your current palette.Use a limited palette to mix your color values, as that will be less of a production.1. Mix a three value scale with the lightest, darkest and mid value, in black and white at the top of your canvas or index paper on the top left. This will be your guide. Now try to match this 3 scale with each of the colors you are using to make a row for each, under the original black and white scale. So you would have three values for black and white, under that blue, then yellow, then red, and so forth.2. In the middle/right section of the canvas or page at the top do a five value scale from Black to white. You will repeat this in your colors as they move down the page.3. You will do a full value range painting in black an

Tips For Painting Landscapes In Watercolor
One of the biggest challenges beginners face with any type of art, is the ability to really connect with the creativity that is inside of them. It’s difficult in the beginning to just let go and paint from your heart and soul. Your mind is being filled with techniques and systems for approaching painting, that may inhibit your creativity. Don’t get me wrong, painting techniques are essential to learning, but there should be a point where you begin to draw from your own creative imagination. When painting a subject, whether it be a person, landscape, wildlife, etc., it is important that you first carefully study and observe your subject. You need to get intimate and personal with the subject you are painting. If you want to learn how to paint great landscapes, then you should spend time in and around the area that inspires you to paint. Only then can you really get a sense of what it is you are seeing, and how to re-create that scene on paper. Before you even touch the pai

      Macro Landscapes - “Sporangia”
There is no doubt, that wonderous landscapes can also be found down near your feet! The first image, I concentrated on these two “sporangia” spores, or moss, that were standing proudly among the mountains of white dogwood blooms that had fallen from the trees. It provided a wonderful play of colors and light! © 2005 - Michael Brown * Copying/downloading of images is prohibited. “Sporangia Moss” With the second image, the lens was flat on the ground while the body of the camera itself was sitting down within a slight dip in the ground. I wanted something a bit more abstract, and showing how the small stem areas of the sporangia moss could look like tall tree trunks in a landscape. © 2005 - Michael Brown * Copying/downloading of images is prohibited. “Sporangia Landscape” Both images were created with the Canon 100mm macro, teleconverter, cable release, and natural light. Camera was flat on the ground for both images.

Renoir Landscapes at the National Gallery
Finally I manage to write a bit about this exhibition.Renoir is not a favourite artist of mine, though I appreciate his work his good - his women are very simpering, shallow and sugary and having done some research for an art history assignment at uni, I found he had a very unpleasant attitude towards women, thinking women artists were an abomination and women should be in the kitchen or bedroom! He 'painted with his *****', he said. Some of his works, like the Bar at the Folies Bergere I do like, very much.Anway, to the landscapes. I really hadn't seen many of his landscapes before so was interested to see them. It was noticeable straight away that, unlike Monet, he didn't look hard at the greens that were there, but used bluey-greens and generalised, choosing his own colour scheme, though in the example shown here the greens aren't so blue - probably because the water is very blue and it simply wouldn't have worked in this case. The early landscapes were frankly not very good!

      Landscapes
In art, a cloudscape (or skyscape) is the depiction of a view of clouds or the sky. Usually, as in the examples seen here, the clouds are depicted as viewed from the earth, often including just enough of a landscape to suggest scale, orientation, weather conditions, and distance (through the application of the technique of aerial perspective, which see).A landscape comprises is the visible features of an area of land, including physical elements such as landforms, living elements of flora and fauna, abstract elements such as lighting and weather conditions, and human elements, for instance human activity or the built environment. Landscape may also signify the objects around one in a building.Landscape art depicts scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather usually is an element of the composition.
