EEOC settles landmark "cat's paw" discrimination case
When an adverse employment decision is made by a person who lacks impermissible bias, but was influenced by another individual who was motivated by such bias, is the employer liable for this rubber-stamped decision? While courts have not conclusively answered this question, the majority answer is yes. The leading case recognizing this theory of liability is EEOC v. BCI Coca-Cola Bottling Co. It famously describes this type of discrimination as "cat's paw" liability. "Cat's paw" derives from a fable in which a monkey tricks a cat into scooping chestnuts out of a fire so that the monkey can eagerly gobble them up, leaving none left for the cat. It generally describes a situation where one is unwittingly manipulated to do another's bidding. Last week, the EEOC reported that it settled with

It served as the city's main entrance when it became South Korea's capital more than 600 years ago.More than 100 firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze, firing hoses from every angle. But their efforts were not enough to prevent the two-storey superstructure crumbling as the flames ripped through it.By Monday morning, only the stone base of the gate was left. According to initial estimates, it will take three years and $21m to restore.South Koreans spoke of their anguish at losing the gate, which was re-opened to the public two years ago for the first time since 1907.[BBC]

Ben’s Chili Bowl - A Washington, DC Landmark
Ben’s Chili Bowl was born in 1958 and Washingtonians have been thankful ever since. Over the past few years, I’d heard it’s name associated with stars such as Bill Cosby, and finally decided to see what the buzz was about. Located in northwest DC, along the U Street corridor, Ben’s Chili Bowl has watched the neighborhood around it gentrify and develop in recent years. The Starbucks and metro entrance across the street is a fitting contrast to the historical chili joint which began serving customers when U Street was once known as the “Black Broadway” due to all the jazz clubs. As noted on the history page of Ben’s Chili Bowl website: It was not uncommon to see such luminaries as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole, Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory, Martin Luther King Jr., or Bill Cosby at “the Bowl.” Ste

Two BNP members suffer landmark libel case defeat
TWO British National Party members have suffered a landmark defeat in their fight for libel damages from a magazine. Former London mayoral candidate Christopher Roberts, of St Mary's Drive, Benfleet, and his brother Barry argued they were defamed by a 2003 article in the monthly Searchlight publication. The piece, written by Gerry Gable, appeared in the News from the Sewers column, and reported allegations the Roberts brothers, who have both stood for Parliament, had threatened "to kneecap, torture and kill" various people after a bust-up within the BNP. He also alleged Christopher Roberts had stolen cash after a party rally. The brothers vehemently denied there was any truth to the allegations, which were first aired by other BNP members, and argued they were defamatory. They also said the article not only repeated untrue allegations, but "embellished" them as well. But, at the High Court last year, Justice Eady ruled Searchlight had a defence of "qualified privilege", as the article

Boston Icon "Mr. Butch" - Homeless Guitar Celebrity and Beloved Local Landmark is Dead
This story is still unfolding.... The man was probably one of the most upbeat and charming characters many will meet their entire lives. Entertaining and cheerful, he became a landmark in the city for many who (like myself) have only lived portions of my life here. How remarkably odd that a homeless man - even one as enigmatic as the great "Mr. Butch" - would become a symbol of stability amongst a sea of change here. I know many others feel the same. There is a Mr. Butch Wikipedia page! On an annual basis, Mr. Butch was voted the "Neighborhood Character" in the Boston Phoenix's polls - even though that was not how they initially intended the question. I learned of his passing just late last night and decided to put a couple of tracks together for him. Please play these and enjoy the images while you read the story wh

Traveling classroom uses landmark civil rights sites as teaching tool
More and more colleges are leading trips through the South -- to cities such as Memphis, where King was shot in 1968, Little Rock, Arkansas, Atlanta, Selma, Alabama, and Jackson -- to help students understand the long, bitter struggle for equality. The trips bring events of that period to life and provide students with insights they could not get in a classroom, say officials of Southern Methodist University, sponsor of the tour Matlock joined."Seeing Medgar Evers' house was sobering because we saw how that family had to live back in that time," said Matlock, describing the home where the Mississippi NAACP field secretary was fatally shot. It is in Jackson, the tour's first stop. "The house was designed with no front door. They had to live on the floor. They were prisoners in their home."In 2005, SMU created its Civil Rights Pilgrimage Travel Seminar, which takes students during spring break to historical sites. Matlock, who works in the university's Human Resources department, trave

      Landmark Mall
by Chantelle Getting there Insofar as anywhere is a long way from anywhere in Doha, Landmark is a long way from anywhere. It is also a nightmare to get to with unfinished roads blocking your every turn. When the road is finally finished, the best way to get here will be along AL Shamal Road. There's a terrible shortage of taxis at this mall - I wouldn't even dream of going there without a car.Review: Landmark seems to be trying to for a more upmarket approach than City Centre Mall. Mega-mart, the food provider in Landmark, is both more expensive and classier than City Centre’s Carrefour, and Landmark’s main shopping area is fairly smart. It has a good range of shops, and I particularly liked Lush, the first branch I have seen, both for its emphasis on hand made beauty products and the delicious smells that greet you on entry. However, in its food hall (full of the usual low class fast food stalls) and its terribly named ‘circus land’ and ‘cinema land’ Landmark descends to

My Experience With The Landmark Forum
It was the beginning of August 2006, and being the college student that I was, I stuck to a tight budget. One of my dear friends had mentioned a seminar a few months prior. He attended this seminar as a teen, went to some follow up seminars, and in turn accredited his amazing character and productivity from what he had learned there. The seminar had caught my interest immediately, as I was already submersed into the world of personal development, and this info coming from one of my mastermind group members was well received. It took me a few months before I made the monetary commitment ($440) to attend this 3.5 day seminar. My Review: Life altering, phenomenol experience from which there is no turning back. I haven’t heard of any seminars like that! From what I understand they don’t spend a penny on advertising, but they always fill up seminars with casual groups of 75-250. It all works on word-of-mouth. So what did you get out of it? I got that in order for me to stay comm

She was a gentle, dignified, hard-working and selfless lady who always put her family first. When she was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 1993, her first thought was that this was one death too many in the family for her own mother, Maie, had died of the same disease in 1982. June had lost her mother during the terrible phase of the illness. The only known cause of this incurable cancer of the chest is exposure to asbestos earlier in life, and as a child growing up in Armley, Leeds, June had innocently played amongst the deadly dust billowing out of the JW Roberts asbestos factory.June decided to fight for justice and so instructed IM to take the company responsible for her illness to Court.
