FRANKFURT, May 4 - Daimler Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche would be interested in a cooperation with carmakers Jaguar and Land Rover, according to a report in a German trade magazine. Last fall, Land Rover teased attendees of an auto show with silhouetted images of an upcoming show car. Then, in January, it unveiled its Range Stormer concept car.Looks like the British company is doing it again, teasing the folks in Frankfurt with a photo of this vaguely SUV-shaped, two-door vehicle, but releasing no details. The Range Stormer turned out to be a treat worth waiting for, so hopefully this January in Detroit, perhaps we'll learn more about that sleek mystery car in the photo.

Honda Motor Co.’s luxury Acura division topped a consumer satisfaction survey by Pacific Grove, California-based sales consultancy Pied Piper, which was intended to measure how well U.S. car shoppers felt they were treated in dealer showrooms and if they bought a vehicle on the spot. Ford Motor Co. confirmed today that it has hired outside advisers to help evaluate options for its British luxury brands.“We’re working with outside financial advisers to determine the best future for Jaguar and Land Rover,” Ford spokesman John Gardiner said today. “We’re not ruling anything in or out. We’re investigating options in terms of all the possible actions.”Selling Jaguar and Land Rover is one of those options. But no imminent announcement of a sale is expected, a Ford source said.Ford isn’t naming the advisers. But the automaker has hired Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to help it shop Jaguar and Land Rover, sources have told Automotive News. The craftsmen in the Solihull Tool Room were tasked with creating a life-size, exact match of the one on the small screen, from scratch. “It is based on a Series I, but completed using a mix of several models,” said Roger Crathorne, Land Rover technical communications manager. We used a 1951 rolling chassis with a 90-inch rear body. There are panels used from a variety of Land Rover Series vehicles including 2007 Defender panels. The SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) isn’t so well approached by the company yet, although the Freelander is kind of an SUV. OHIO'S LEMON LAWS STAND IN LAND ROVER TRIAL Cleveland, Ohio, July 23, 2001 - A jury in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court found in favor of the owner of a Land Rover Discovery II under Ohio's lemon laws. The $45,000 luxury vehicle spent a total of 52 days in the shop for repairs to the electrical system, brakes, steering, engine, transmission, accelerator pedal and other problems during the first 17 months of use. The laws offer strong protection to consumers who purchase a vehicle in Ohio, as confirmed by a recent Ohio Supreme Court decision. The manufacturer's outstanding reputation for quality, luxury and dependability led Demetrius Smith to purchase the high end Land Rover. "I wanted a car I could use for both work and leisure as I spend so much time on the road. This SUV gave me problems from the first day I drove it and certainly was not a vehicle I could trust or count on," adds Mr. Smith

Jacques Nasser, the man who gave us the dubious marriage of Ford, Land Rover, and Jaguar that resulted in the now defunct Premium Auto Group,want to buy Jaguar and Land Rover. The Times reports that Nasser is visiting the factories to "woo trade unions" in an attempt to get support for his bid. Gentleman Jac's partnering with One Equity Partners, JPMorgan Chase's private equity firm. Fearing the old "strip and flip," union leaders have asked the Government to block any sale to an equity firm. Whoever ends up with the not-so-dynamic duo, the union wants Ford to "agree that if they are going to sell Jaguar and Land Rover they ensure there is a long-term commitment to keeping production, research and development and stamping at existing facilities."

According to The Sunday Telegraph, FoMoCo is making it easier for bidders intent on relieving the automaker of the remaining British pieces of their PAG (Premium Automotive Group). In an "unprecedented move," Ford has decided that potential buyers do not have to submit fully-financed bids for the second round. The change reflects the tightening of the international credit market; a trend that raised the cost of Cerberus' Chrysler takeover and delayed the recent sale of GM's Allison Transmissions unit. The lowered bar is a big boost to bids by two (count 'em two) ex-Jag CEOs (Sir Nick Scheele and Bob Dover), former Ford CEO Jac Nasser and Chrysler-owning Cerberus; all of whom are playing this game with OPM (Other People's Money). Indian automakers Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, however, are bound to be pissed at FoMoCo's newly leveled playing field. 

Tata's prospective purchase of Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford is reportedly foundering on Tata's insistence on price guarantees for Ford engines. The Detroit News quotes sources "close to negotiations" (as opposed to?) as saying Ford is unlikely to agree to any such guarantees in light of price increases in key commodities. Garel Rhys, director of the Centre for Automotive Industry at Cardiff University, calls Tata's request "absurd, and they know it." BUT Rhys reckons it's in Tata's interest to drag-out the purchase process while it secures financing. And, perhaps, a better price.
