Human Rights Poem (49): The Slave’s Lament
The Slave’s Lament, Robert Burns It was in sweet Senegal that my foes did me enthrall For the lands of Virginia-ginia O; Torn from that lovely shore, and must never see it more, And alas! I am weary, weary O! Torn from &c. All on that charming coast is no bitter snow and frost, Like the lands of Virginia-ginia O; There streams for [...]

      Gaeta’s Lament on Battlestar Galactica
Throughout Guess What’s Coming To Dinner, Gaeta sings to distract himself from the pain after his leg is amputated. The song, Gaeta’s Lament, serves as a narrative thread connecting the entire episode, not only communicating his character’s misery, but weaving together the multiple story arcs. Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man With my three wishes [...]

      lament for Lester
I remember well my dearest Grandpa, his crooked smile, laugh and languid wave. A young child, I did not know what he saw, or that he made a protest which was brave. Even then I’d seen, hard times fell on him, but the young me didn’t know why or how. While pursed lips grasped the cold beer bottle rim, it seemed [...]

Australian press lament 'Tour de Farce'
They might have walked away with the coveted World Cup trophy, but Australians were on Monday shaking their heads at the bizarre ending to the biggest event in cricket's one-day calendar."Victory in tour de farce" trumpeted Sydney's Daily Telegraph, which bemoaned the official bungling that saw the last minutes of the final against Sri Lanka played play out in near pitch-black darkness.Confusion over whether the game had finished, which saw Australia celebrate victory for ten minutes before being asked to play three more overs, had reduced the competition to an "international laughing stock," the paper said. The criticism did not stop at the rain-interrupted final played at Bridgetown's Kensington Oval but extended to the entire tournament, which was dismissed as too long and boring."The 20

      Labour lament
Recent polls make grim reading for Gordon Brown. YouGov has the Conservatives with a 16 point lead, with Labour remaining under 30 per cent (28 per cent). This means Labour are losing more than swing voters, they are losing their core vote. Bad news for Brown, especially when his low approval ratings are taken into account. If this wounding was not bad enough, YouGov provide some salt in the result that if Tony Blair were still leader the Conservative lead would be slashed to just 5 points (voters looking back to halcyon days, I imagine).Predictably, voters are gloomy about the future of the economy and think the government overspends and overtaxes. Brown's reputation as a floundering ditherer seems to now be entrenched in the minds of voters, and like pessimism over the economy this is di

      Anti-hijabers lament triumph of democracy

The parliament's board of governors ruled that the hijab is permitted in its hallowed halls. Headscarves OK in Parliament The Copenhagen Post It was a victory for the Red-Green Party's Asmaa Abdol-Hamid and a bitter defeat for the Danish People's Party on Tuesday when parliament's board of governors ruled that MPs may dress as they wish in parliament, so long as they can be recognised by their colleagues. The decision was specific taken up in response to the issue of women wearing the traditional Muslim headscarf. Abdol-Hamid is a parliamentary candidate for her party, and she said she would continue wearing her headscarf should she become an MP. The Danish P

      A Mother's Lament
Since my son began college two months ago, I've been feeling bad that I haven't been as insightful as I'd wished in providing advice for him, and helping him put things in perspective. During his recent break, we talked a lot about the problems he's been encountering, with the hope of finding solutions. Now that my son has returned to school, he's been trying to stop focusing on what he's going

'Paulson's Lament: Deregulation has been a Failure'
You know things are very very bad on Wall Street when a guy like Henry Paulson -- Treasury secretary, solid Republican, and former Goldman Sachs CEO -- joins the crowd calling for more regulation over the financial markets.   Paulson spared no one in his criticism Thursday of the excesses of deregulation that has now created the worst global financial crisis in a generation, threatening the health of the U.S. economy, the savings of millions of Americans, and the survival of some of the biggest financial institutions in the world. See full story.   Wall Street and Washington both failed big time, he said. Wall Street invented new ways to make money by selling securities so complicated that no one could really follow which shell the pea was under. Fortunes were made on

As U.S. Christians, we issue a call to the American church to lament and repent of the sin of this war. We lament the suffering and violence in Iraq . We mo

Don Fardon - (The Lament of the Cherokee) Indian Reservation (1968)
One of the most overlooked bands of the British Invasion, the Sorrows offered a tough brand of R&B-infused rock that recalled the Pretty Things (though not as R&B-oriented) and the Kinks (though not as pop-oriented). Their biggest British hit, "Take a Heart," stopped just outside the U.K. Top 20; several other fine mid-'60s singles met with either slim or a total lack of success. With the rich,... A Mother's Lament
The photograph above represents my experience at Cal in the Sixties. While Joan Baez may have enjoyed participating in anti-war demonstrations, I was stunned when students ran down Telegraph Avenue throwing rocks at storefronts. I was speechless when some members of the police department hit some of them with billy clubs. And I was frightened when they tear-gased my dorm. All of this and so much more caused my first undiagnosed depressive episode. Almost 40 years later, I'm here once again for the Transfer Student Orientation for my son. He picked the university that almost destroyed my life.I made peace with Cal about five years ago. I've been so excited by the way my son (and I) have been treated. Nonetheless, today was very difficult for me. Perhaps, because of the stress of the last few months, there have been moments when I've felt like I could cry 40 years of tears.I pray my son has made the right choice for himself. I can't bear the thought that he could be as unhappy here a

      No Need to Lament
Law professor Jonathon Turley is lamenting the idea that the NRA is right when it comes to the Second Amendment. But Professor, I'm here to tell you, that's no reason to be sad. Jonathon Turley says coming to this conclusion is hard for "someone raised to believe that the Second Amendment was the dividing line between the enlightenment and the dark ages of American culture." Now Turley knows what gun owners have known for years: that the enlightened men who spoke of our right to life, liberty,...(read more)

      A Bears lament
Fellow Chicago Bears fans, if you watched yesterday's game like I did, I'm sure you'll agree that I will probably not need to repost the Super Bowl Shuffle this year. Sad but true.Rex looked like Rex, and that isn't really a good thing. Mike Brown is injured and out for the season (again). Cedric Benson looked like the chump I've thought he was since the day he was drafted by the Bears. Where did all the magic go?So I've been taking a bit of a brrrrrreak! to recharge the old blogging batteries. Mo' music tomorrow. I promise! I'll get those packages mailed out to contest winners (finally) and have a new one up courtesy of our pals at Equal Vision Records. I just need another day to get my head back in the game. That's all.

      Lament of a Naked Libertarian
I don't know if I'm getting old, but I am beginning to think maybe there are just too many idiots for libertarianism to flourish in these modern United States.Brattleboro, Vermont has long been known for its tolerance of public stripping. No one really paid attention to sunbathers in the town commons.Naked women on parade floats—who cares. Teenagers hanging around a parking lot in the buff—no problem. What could be better than a town of hippies, Yankee cranks and libertarians, all bound together by the universal absence of tan lines? But now the town, where it is only climatically possible to be nude about six weeks out of the year, has been forced to ban it altogether. These days it seems anything like this turns into a creepy perv magnet. It's like this beach on Puget Sound off the Evergreen State College campus in Washington State. The little beach, which is only accessible by a two mile walk through the woods, is a gem and has always been clothing optional. When I was a t

I've just been called in to work because 'the system is down' or at least that's how it was explained to me. I actually find the system is up and working just fine except the print server was stuck on the 'boot from which device' screen - waiting for me to select Hard Drive. This apparently renders the whole system 'down' from a user perspective.Ah well. At least everyone is happy bunnies now.As for me, I'm off to bed. Good night. :)

Mike and Jamie: A Valentine's Day Lament
This post is about two people that I find so annoying that the very thought of them makes me want to pay someone a large sum of money to beat my head in with the nearest blunt object. Mike and Jamie (who happen to share the study cubicle right next to mine) are best friends, just short of having matching tattoos and BFF bracelets. But what makes me feel compelled to perform bodily harm on myself each time I hear their names is the fact that Jamie is positively in love with Mike. I realise I'm not making any sense so let me put things into perspective. Here is the crucial tid-bit you need to know about Jamie: She's HOT!!
