Even the GOP-led state Assembly, which refused to vote on SB 523, held a hearing on the bill. So

The Great Lakes Are Under Threat and Wisconsin Fiddles
One of the very first acts performed by David Paterson as Governor of New York was to sign a law enacting the Great Lakes Compact, an agreement among all of the States and Canadian Provinces around the Great Lakes to protect the lakes from pollution, invasive species and covetous neighbors. To make a bad pun, it is a watershed agreement, an international coalition to protect one of the world's great resources. Except it has to be approved unanimously and Republican politicians in Wisconsin are playing games, sacrificing one of their greatest assets on the altar of cheesy politics. They don't like co-operating with neighbors- one state senator wrote "To relinquish our sovereignty to a regional body of governors that can make changes after the compact is adopted is unacceptable. Trail Recomendation: Young and Dog Lakes
I've included another two page spread in my coffee-table book. This panorama is one of my favorites. I hiked this trail in the hight of summer and was almost completely alone the entire time. I saw one or two people in the first mile, then nothing the rest of the day.The Young Lake trail starts at Tuolumne Meadows and works its way straight back into the wilderness, crossing creeks and cutting through meadows. There is an eastern and western route up to the Young Lakes. Be sure to take the eastern route either coming or going, and stop at Dog Lake. The area around dog lake is full of meadows and marshes perfect for the grazing of dear. The whole area is perfectly peaceful and restorative.Image at Left: one of the glacier scraped meadows along the trail, surrounded by a crown of distant, jag

It seems like buyers are realizing with interest rates this low (30 year fixed mortgages were at 5.5%-3/18/08) and plenty of homes to choose from...better buy now.

NYT - "Health Report Raises Dispute Over Great Lakes Pollution"
"Top federal health officials said Wednesday that they had asked the Institute of Medicine, the government's premier medical adviser, to referee a dispute over a report suggesting that pollution in the Great Lakes region may have serious health consequences for people who live there, including infant mortality and breast cancer. 'It's a good way to get a really high-quality and completely objective scientific review,' said Dr. Henry Falk, who oversees environmental health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But Dr. Christopher T. De Rosa, a federal toxicology official who was a co-author of the report, said the Bush administration had suppressed it 'because it implies injury.' He bemoaned the decision to ask for a review from the Institute of Medicine, which is par

Travel Recomendation: Sequoia NP Lakes Trail
The TreesOn my first trip to Sequoia National Park, I went with my family and saw what the park is famous for: really, really big trees:Now, don't get me wrong, the trees are truly amazing. There is no way to grasp their freakish size without actually seeing them. However, what I didn't realize on my first visit is that Sequoia National Park is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and has some majestic lakes and mountains that rival those of Yosemite. The TrailIt wasn't till my third trip to Sequoia that I hiked the Lakes trail. This trail starts at Wolverton on the north side of the parking lot. For some time the trail climbs steadily up through an unremarkable forest; however, take the north rout when the trail branches off, and you will gain an awesome vantage point on a deep cany

ATSDR Charged With Suppressing Report on Great Lakes Toxic Risks
"CHICAGO -- The lead author and peer reviewers of a government report raising the possibility of public health threats from industrial contamination throughout the Great Lakes region are charging that the report is being suppressed because of the questions it raises. The author also alleges that he was demoted because of the report. Chris De Rosa, former director of the division of toxicology and environmental medicine at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), charges that the report he wrote was a significant factor in his reassignment to a non-supervisory 'special assistant' position last year. The House Committee on Science and Technology is investigating De Rosa's reassignment, in light of allegations that it was related to the Great Lakes report and hi

From the Lakes to the Fens
Does anyone else remember a place called Lakeland Plastics, a small warehouse near Windermere station where you could buy freezer bags and all sort of plastic goods?Well, the small Cumbrian firm has transformed itself, and has a branch in Cambridge which has been nominated by a partially-sighted customer.Mark went to check it out, and as you can see from the photo (left) he is showing an unhealthy interest in the Hallowe'en catering range for gruesome snacks . His visit showed good basic facilities for wheelchair users such as level access, automatic door opening, generous circulation space and low checkout counters. What we could not know until our The Way To Be nomination came in was the helpful and discreet assistance offered to customers who need a bit of help to find and examine the goods. Thought for the Day: Just as the Lakeland poet Wordsworth spoke of the inner eye that can recapture beautiful sights such as wild daffodils, we know how much it means to disabled customers to

Tech school partners with Lakes Learning
Making transition easier. That’s what Lakes Learning and the Minnesota State Community and Technical College’s new partnership is all about. When entering MSCTC, students take an Accuplacer Assessment test to determine what math, reading and writing level class they should enter. Some students who take that test may come up with a score a bit lower than they had hoped — right on the edge of one class and a higher level. Rather than needing a course, maybe all the student needed was a refresher course before the test. Enter Lakes Learning. “The college felt the need for math, reading and writing but not to exhaust financial needs,” Helene Hedlund, MSCTC dean of Academic and Student Affairs. So without making the student take a lower level class than actually needed, Lakes Learning Instructor Amy Fish will tutor students in the desired field. The student can then test a second time and hopefully earn a better score. “That way they’re not paying for unnecessary three credits

Richardson Angers Environmentalists and Voters in Great Lakes States
Bill Richardson showed lots of promise earlier in the campaign but a series of gaffes has prevented his campaign from gaining any traction. This week Richardson angered voters in the great lakes region by suggesting that the water be diverted to the southwest: Michigan environmental activists Thursday accused New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson of suggesting that northern states — including the Great Lakes region — share water with the Sun Belt. “Richardson’s assault is the latest in a lengthy list of schemes to siphon Great Lakes water to other areas of the nation and the world,'’ said five groups, including the Michigan Environmental Council and the state chapter of the Sierra Club, in a written statement. A spokesman for Richardson, a Democratic presidential hopeful, said if elected he would “embrace a national water policy that will specifically help protect the authority of states and the rights of local communities throughout the country.'’

They are going to build a storm water pond system that will be a focal point in a proposed park called Historic Fourth Ward Park, near the proposed Beltline. Here are a few other ideas that developers have envisioned for this project. The five year goal is to create a 13 to 16 acre park on the south side of North Avenue near City Hall East. Long term, this park will grow to 35 acres. The $30 million water feature will be finished by the end of 2009 and will cover 4.7 acres. Fishing the Great Lakes:
By Dave Cisar Allocating Playing Time in Youth Football, The Youth Football Coaching Nightmare:This is often a subject many youth football coaches struggle with. The head coach is either a win-at-all-costs coach who cares little about getting all the kids in the game or he’s a guy that lets the soccer mom Nazi parents pressure him into playing all the kids the same amount.I don’t think either approach is right. This is youth football, if a player comes to practice, pays attention and does his best, he should get some playing time in every game regardless of what the score is. However playing all the kids the same amount, makes no sense to me either. If Tommy comes to all the practices, pays attention to the coaches and tries his best, and Joey misses practice, is inattentive and rarely tries very hard, the two should not play the same amount of time. What message do you send to Tommy?: That excelling is not rewarded. What message does Joey get?: That slacking off has zero consequen
