This little ladybug pendant is, simply put, cute as a bug. Being part of the arguably defunct Elephant 6 collective the band have retained the naivety of the collective's sixties pop stylings emerging perhaps as the American peers to a host of Scottish indie pop acts; most notably Belle & Sebastian.
I should probably be a little more specific in stating this, so here we go then; the Ladybug Transistor sound like Stuart Murdoch with the Shadows as his backing band. Whilst this might sound a loathsome suggestion to most of you chuck in a twist of Northern Soul. Opener Always on the Telephone' has the nasal guitar work of Hank Marvin paired, dare I say it, beautifully with lush orchestration that would make latter-day Camera Obscura seem tactless.

She was taking the summer off from being a pop star in Sweden and hanging around New York to write. We sat down at the piano one day and I helped with a song of hers called “Sun Goes Down.” It became a duet and was released on her last record I Think It’s A Rainbow. We’ve become friends and I see her a lot in New York. She was down in SXSW with her marvelous band, so we had to have her drop in to lend some vocal harmonies. Thanks to RegisAt first listen, the Ladybug Transistor resemble the better-crafted Britpop groups of the 1980s. Gary Olson's deep, carefully enunciated vocals bring to mind Echo & the Bunnymen and Lowlife-era New Order, especially on "Echoes" and "Wooden Bars," tracks from Argyle Heir, the Ladybug Transistor's fourth release. But a closer focus unveils a deeper surprise--gentle hook-laden pop songs augmented by perfectly placed layers of woodwinds and brass. "Nico Norte" could easily be an updated outtake from the Mamas and the Papas' Deliver album, while "Brighton Bound" features harmonies that would make a barbershop quartet proud. Only the faux-renaissance "Catherine Elizabeth" seems out of place, but even that delicate tapestry of a tune works on repeated listens. Argyle Heir? The Ladybug Transistor? What do they mean? The Ladybug (ladybirds to the British and Australians) is my second favorite garden dweller. Aside from their aesthetic quality I appreciate them for the work they do in the garden to keep the aphids and scale under control. This year I decided to avoid using chemicals in the garden to provide as hospitable home for beneficial insects. I spent two days stalking and photographing this ladybug in the garden watching it march up and down various plants looking for food. Unfortunately I picked it up on the third day to show it to my nephew and it flew off into the pear tree next door.Yesterday I noticed a new insect in my garden that I didn't recognize and was about to pull out the gardening gloves and start smashing them when something told me to hold back until I could photograph this bug and get an identification for it. Making great wine requires skill and more than a little luck. Winemakers have many challenges in the quest to make a great vintage. Add ladybugs to the list.According to an Iowa State University study presented recently to the American Chemical Society, a growing number of wines suffer from what is being called Ladybug Taint. Ladybugs are a natural control for aphids and other pests. But Iowa State researchers also found they excrete a foul-smelling liquid that is damaging some wines with a green pepper or roasted peanut odor. It turns out that ladybugs produce methoxypyrazines, a natural defense mechanism. Certain species of ladybugs release more of these odors than others, which the researchers found could have as many as 28 different odors. Ladybugs are often present in vineyards and the researchers say only a small amount of methoxypyrazines mixing with grapes can impact a wine's flavor.
