Climbing Straight up The Sturdy Ladder
From 24 Four Hours a Day, July 15:" You are climbing up the ladder of life, which reaches into eternity. Would G-d plant your feet upon an insecure ladder? "Many years ago, I was privileged to help an immigrant adjust to his new country. He had undergone many difficulties, and had suddenly hit a new one. I asked him a similar question: Do you think that Hashem (Higher Power) has brought you this

      "Ladder" diagrams LADDER LOGIC
Ladder diagrams are specialized schematics commonly used to document industrial control logic systems. They are called "ladder" diagrams because they resemble a ladder, with two vertical rails (supply power) and as many "rungs" (horizontal lines) as there are control circuits to represent. If we wanted to draw a simple ladder diagram showing a lamp that is controlled by a hand switch, it would look like this: The "L1" and "L2" designations refer to the two poles of a 120 VAC supply, unless otherwise noted. L1 is the "hot" conductor, and L2 is the grounded ("neutral") conductor. These designations have nothing to do with inductors, just to make things confusing. The actual transformer or generator supplying power to this circuit is omitted for simplicity. In reality, the circui

      Digital logic functions LADDER LOGIC
We can construct simply logic functions for our hypothetical lamp circuit, using multiple contacts, and document these circuits quite easily and understandably with additional rungs to our original "ladder." If we use standard binary notation for the status of the switches and lamp (0 for unactuated or de-energized; 1 for actuated or energized), a truth table can be made to show how the logic works: Now, the lamp will come on if either contact A or contact B is actuated, because all it takes for the lamp to be energized is to have at least one path for current from wire L1 to wire 1. What we have is a simple OR logic function, implemented with nothing more than contacts and a lamp. We can mimic the AND logic function by wiring the two contacts in series instead of parallel:

Permissive and interlock circuits LADDER LOGIC
A practical application of switch and relay logic is in control systems where several process conditions have to be met before a piece of equipment is allowed to start. A good example of this is burner control for large combustion furnaces. In order for the burners in a large furnace to be started safely, the control system requests "permission" from several process switches, including high and low fuel pressure, air fan flow check, exhaust stack damper position, access door position, etc. Each process condition is called a permissive, and each permissive switch contact is wired in series, so that if any one of them detects an unsafe condition, the circuit will be opened: If all permissive conditions are met, CR1 will energize and the green lamp will be lit. In real life, more tha

      Motor control circuits LADDER LOGIC
The interlock contacts installed in the previous section's motor control circuit work fine, but the motor will run only as long as each pushbutton switch is held down. If we wanted to keep the motor running even after the operator takes his or her hand off the control switch(es), we could change the circuit in a couple of different ways: we could replace the pushbutton switches with toggle switches, or we could add some more relay logic to "latch" the control circuit with a single, momentary actuation of either switch. Let's see how the second approach is implemented, since it is commonly used in industry: When the "Forward" pushbutton is actuated, M1 will energize, closing the normally-open auxiliary contact in parallel with that switch. When the pushbutton is released, the cl

      Fail-safe design LADDER LOGIC
Logic circuits, whether comprised of electromechanical relays or solid-state gates, can be built in many different ways to perform the same functions. There is usually no one "correct" way to design a complex logic circuit, but there are usually ways that are better than others. In control systems, safety is (or at least should be) an important design priority. If there are multiple ways in which a digital control circuit can be designed to perform a task, and one of those ways happens to hold certain advantages in safety over the others, then that design is the better one to choose. Let's take a look at a simple system and consider how it might be implemented in relay logic. Suppose that a large laboratory or industrial building is to be equipped with a fire alarm system, activated b

      Programmable logic controllers LADDER LOGIC
Before the advent of solid-state logic circuits, logical control systems were designed and built exclusively around electromechanical relays. Relays are far from obsolete in modern design, but have been replaced in many of their former roles as logic-level control devices, relegated most often to those applications demanding high current and/or high voltage switching. Systems and processes requiring "on/off" control abound in modern commerce and industry, but such control systems are rarely built from either electromechanical relays or discrete logic gates. Instead, digital computers fill the need, which may be programmed to do a variety of logical functions. In the late 1960's an American company named Bedford Associates released a computing device they called the MODICON. As an

Climbing DownThe Ladder To The Top
Our world today is a dog eat dog world. To many, if not most, all that matters is getting to the top. People will step on just about anyone to get to the top. That isn’t just in the secular world. From the earliest years we instill in our children a sense of always making it to the top. We use top CEO’s as roll models. There is only one place to be: the top. Number two is nothing but the first looser. Or, is it?Luke wrote, “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” (Luke 14:11). That doesn’t say that being at the top is bad thing; it speaks to the attitude that we have on the way there and when we get there. We can be at the top of the ladder of success and be lower than the person on the bottom rung of the ladder of success.

      Ladder of Goodwill for blogs
Unless we are in a very fortunate position, then when we start a business blog we are likely to be faced with the challenge of how to attract visitors to it, how to encourage them to become readers and then how to build their trust and confidence in us and our blog over time. This comes through building, developing and of course maintaining a relationship with our blog readers and it’s a process that I’ve been trying to represent visually for a while. Recently, I came across something that I feel comes very close while flicking through some books at home and one in particular called “How to Succeed as an Independent Consultant” which is written by Timothy RV Foster. In it, I found a diagram and section entitled the ‘Ladder of Goodwill’ which the author had developed to explain the developing relationship a supplier has with its clients. The various rungs on the ladder were described as ranging from ‘Nowhere’ at the start where a customer has no knowl

Now May Be A Good Time To Build A CD Ladder
Economists expect the fed to cut interest rates again this week, only a month after cutting rates for the first time in over 4 years. What does this mean? Well, outside of any effects a rate cut may have on the stock market, it means the interest rates banks pay their customers may fall as well. How can decreasing interest rates affect consumers? For the last year or so, it has been easy to find high interest bank accounts that pay about 5% interest. However, following last month’s rate cuts, interest rates around 4.5% are more common. If the rates are cut again, it is possible that interest rates will drop once more. Lock in current interest rates. It you plan on keeping cash as part of your investment portfolio, now may be a good time to consider a CD ladder. Why? Because a CD ladder will allow you to lock in favorable interest rates for a set period of time. Last week, my wife and I built a 5 year CD ladder and locked in our CDs at rates between 4.91-5.06%. For us, these rates

How To Build A CD Ladder
Many people prefer to keep a certain amount of cash in their investment portfolio, especially when investing for periods of 5 years or less. However, savings accounts do not always give the best return on investment for cash. Certificates of Deposit (CD) usually offer better interest rates than savings accounts because a CD guarantees the bank access to your money for a certain time period. This allows the banks to lend your money to other people and earn a profit. The only problem with CDs is liquidity - you must leave the money in the CD until it matures, or you face an early withdrawal penalty. However, there are options to increase your access to your money. Building a CD ladder is a simple and effective method of investing your money at better interest rates while maintaining some access to the money. How to build a CD ladder: Let’s use a 5 year ladder as an example. In year 1 you invest in 5 separate CDs, one each for lengths of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years. At the end of each y

Count the lessons learned from failures as rungs upon the ladder of progress".I have heard it said many times in Shiurim- Life is like a down escalator- if you're not climbing up, then you will be pulled downward-. It's all about striving to become a better person and according to the Ramchal- working at growing closer to Hashem. Program would agree with this, because, it usually is in synch with Torah Values. If I don't keep aiming higher and higher, then I will just be pulled down. But recently I also heard someone say that even when we climb up the rungs, we should remember to keep one foot on the lower rung (to keep us steady), and also remember where we came from. This helps us not to fall all the way down if we have a slip- it keeps us balanced. In program it's known as "keeping the memory green". This means that I have to r

Santino Marella Sidelined Too... Did the WWE Walk Under a Ladder?
Santino Marella Sidelined Too... Did the WWE Walk Under a Ladder? At a house show, Santino Marella was injured by Umaga. Usually when Umaga does the swinging body slam he takes he opponent to the ground with him, but this time apparently Umaga just threw him to the ground. From the sounds of it Santino's injury does not seem to be too serious, but my only question is. Did someone at the WWE walk under a ladder? Spill salt? Cross a black cats path? What is going on?Hardy, Edge, Undertaker, Rey, Santino, Lashley, and probably some others that are not coming to mind right now.

      Climbing Up Jacob's Ladder Again
News rose today that "Jacob's Ladder" was being remade. While my opinion of remakes in general is unfavorable and I quickly try to forget, this one really made me think. "The Sixth Sense" seemed to be more than inspired by Jacob's Ladder. This would take any sting from the "he was dead all along" twist of the film. Supernatural films are flooding the market. By the time Jacob's Ladder is

      Jacob's Ladder
My sister-in-law Judy now has her first child. She had pictures long before they got her—a beautiful black-haired girl, four years old, wearing a silk dress and a slight frown. There is a depth to the child's eyes, sorrow, reflection, that made me wonder what my brother and his wife were getting themselves into. I expect they wondered, too.Three months ago, Judy jumped into motherhood with both feet, but not long before taking the leap, she met a woman at a party, a stranger, who questioned Judy’s plan to delay enrolling her daughter in preschool to give the child time to adjust and to bond. This woman had, apparently, done extensive research on the topic and wanted to make sure Judy knew this fact.“Is this nit-picking and comparison stuff what Moms do to each other?” Judy asked me later. “If it's not preschool, it's the quantity and quality of the toys we've bought, or how tall our kid is, or TV watching. This Mom-contest seems to be more severe than the worst I've ever

9 Secret Steps To Life Transformation: The Ladder Of Dreams
Hey Folks, I trust that if you had read my last post, you would have found your true dream by now. Remember, you must be excited about your dream, it has induce the kind of energy that makes you talk non-stop and yet the listeners won’t ask you to shut up. If you have not found it yet, don’t worry, it’s there. You just need some time to discover it. What I will be sharing to day is called The Ladder of Dreams. It is a tool I use to create a master plan to fulfill my dreams. So why do you need a master plan? Reason is real simple. There always exist a HUGE gap between your dream and where you are in reality. Over 95% of the people who set goals never achieve them because they give up half way, or more likely 10% of the way. So what does it happen that way? Why do people give up so easily? From my experience, it is a combination of not taking full responsibility, not giving gratitude, poor goal setting and well, it is in the humans nature. The first 3 factors I have men

Newest Addition To The Financial Ladder...
I'm proud to announce that we have a new addition to the financial ladder. Our new bouncing baby boy started climbing with us on April 20th, 2007 @ 5:09 pm. Mommy and baby are both doing well and are in good health. The first financial related question he makes me ask is, what does a natural birth and a 3 day stay at a hospital cost nowa days? That's not a subject I normally think about when discussing new babies with family or friends. Is there anyone out there willing to share what it cost them to give birth in a hospital, and what the actual cost was? Hopefully both of my wife's insurance companies will soften the hit a bit...

      The Bunk Bed Ladder
When we had our house built 5 years ago we never imagined 4 kids running around. The floor plan we chose was a 1.5 story on a basement. Clif's office is in the basement, master on the main, and two bedrooms with a loft upstairs. We kidded our builder that we wanted to fill up the upstairs. That we did! After it was determined that the triplets were going to be 2 boys and 1 girl to add to our little boy, we had to figure out the best way to have 4 kids inhabit 2 small bedrooms. The thought was that Austin would move to the room across from the nursery, the nursery would become the triplet nursery and eventually the two boys would move in with big brother. The best way to accomplish that future fision was bunk beds. Before bed rest I found bunk beds at the unfinished furniture store. It was a floor model and already finished. The style was a single on top/double on bottom. Perfect! If it worked, all three boys could share it some day.Fast forward to an earlier than expected delivery and A

Kevin Pieterson in top of the ladder at ICC rankings
He has uncanny batting technique, but one thing for sure he knows how to make use of willow in hand. Yes you guessed it right! We are talking about England batsman Kevin Pieterson who has attained the number one ICC ranking in the batsman category of one day cricket. This means that he has become only the third England player, after opening batsman Marcus Trescothick and Allan Lamb, to lead the rankings for one-day batsmen. England who is struggling at the World Cup both on and off the field would hope that the best ODI batsman at present lifts the spirit of whole team. Though, he has scored half centuries against New Zealand and Kenya in the group stage but big century is still missing and that is what you need from your big players. If England has any ambition of beating the likes of Australia, South Africa and Srilanka, Pieterson has to fire. The best part about Pieterson as a batsman is his attacking ability. If he is in form, he can slaughter any attack in the world and can wi

      Discipline System: Privilege Ladder
Welcome to Works for Me Wednesday, sponsored by Rocks In My Dryer. My post this week is the privilege ladder portion of our discipline system that I talked about last week in my Chore Board post.On the right side of the Chore Board, you probably noticed a ladder with pegs on it. That's the working part of the ladder. If you made a chore board for your family, add this working ladder part to the open side of your cork board by drawing a simple ladder in permanent marker. My ladder is two inches wide and the rungs are two inches apart. The privilege ladder has seven rungs. Each rung has different privileges the children earn which we list on a separate ladder you see in this picture. (I made it out of cardboard and "laminated" it with packing tape.)If a kid is on level five, he kid gets all the privileges up to that rung including the one he's on. The bottom of the ladder before rung one is, of course, grounded. This has base privileges like reading and playing with bucket toys, plus ext

Like I Fell And Got Squashed By The Ladder
I didn’t actually got hit by a ladder, but like the wise Malay man once said, sometimes you fall and you get squashed by the ladder. I think it means that sometimes you have bad luck and one bad thing happens to you, to be followed by another bad thing. First I got sick and had that runny nose (it’s still running). The yesterday, while at Nani’s house, I fell and somehow hit my lip on the table, cutting my big fat lower lip. It was painful. It was EXCRUCIATINGLY PAINFUL!! But I’m ok now. I just want my hair back. Give me back my curlies…

A group of the youth went to watch Ladder 49 today...
A group of the youth went to watch Ladder 49 today. I didn't go, although I really wanted to. It's just that I realised I'm not close to any of them who were going, so... Scrap that. Girlie's watched it already, Bang had something else to do, Russell was MIA, and Lionel... Well, he was still in one of his moods. I realised there's still a number of people in the youth who I haven't really talked to yet, never talked to before, or we only do so when we have to under certain circumstances, or situations... I'm really not the type of person who has the "charismatic" charm, as Jonathan puts it, like Jamie has. I'm also neither the person who makes friends easily or someone who takes like a fish to water in social situations.I don't know if it's just me, but I've got the feeling that there are one or two people who have been treating me not as friendly as of late. I've decided it's because of the assistant leader thing. Hey, I didn't ask for it, and I'm already having enough

It has all kinds of different handrails you can put on it, depending on the degree of safety you or your organization requires. It is in use by a ton of big schools and universities, the government and military, huge construction companies, airports, boat docks, automotive places, and lots of other places. Habitat for Humanity and Firefighters are even starting to use the product.I am not a master of word imagery, but imagine an ironing board that is light enough to easily carry that has a 5ft long and wide enough to easily stand on deck. It has a scissor action that lifts the product to any height you need it to work at.

      Hook and Ladder
Wow, not bad for a $15 Chardonnay. From Russian River Valley, this 2003 white wine from Hook and Ladder has a nice balance between oak, creaminess and acidity. The winemaker sais appel on the palate, I say rhubarb. This is a very nice sip-it-by-it-self wine enjoyed in a casual setting with your friends. It was awarded 88 point from Wine and Spirit. Find it at www.candcwineservices.com.
