Last night, I had a chance to catch-up on my backlog of flipping shows on Tivo: Flip That House and Property Ladder (the rest are too dramatic and unrealistic even for me).  If only I could flip houses in Fantasy Land where all of these shows seem to take place.  Here is a typical scenario on these shows: 1.) Take one lottery-ticket buyer from the local liquor store, and place the label 'real estate investor' on said individual. 2.) Pay 350,000 for a house that is barely standing on its rotting foundation. 3.) Spend 4 weeks and $30,000 (or insert your own ridiculously low number here) to gut the kitchen and baths; replace the mechanical and electrical systems, drywall, install new hardwood floors, stainless appliances, landscaping, new roof, plus a few mishaps with contractors and subs along the way. 4.) Sell immediately for $550,000 (even though the stated comps only support $475,000). 5.) Make a cool profit of $170,000. Geez, where to begin.  I'm not sure abou

I'm proud to announce that we have a new addition to the financial ladder. Our new bouncing baby boy started climbing with us on April 20th, 2007 @ 5:09 pm. Mommy and baby are both doing well and are in good health. The first financial related question he makes me ask is, what does a natural birth and a 3 day stay at a hospital cost nowa days? That's not a subject I normally think about when discussing new babies with family or friends. When we had our house built 5 years ago we never imagined 4 kids running around. The floor plan we chose was a 1.5 story on a basement. Clif's office is in the basement, master on the main, and two bedrooms with a loft upstairs. We kidded our builder that we wanted to fill up the upstairs. That we did!After it was determined that the triplets were going to be 2 boys and 1 girl to add to our little boy, we had to figure out the best way to have 4 kids inhabit 2 small bedrooms. The thought was that Austin would move to the room across from the nursery, the nursery would become the triplet nursery and eventually the two boys would move in with big brother. The best way to accomplish that future fision was bunk beds.Before bed rest I found bunk beds at the unfinished furniture store. It was a floor model and already finished. That's the working part of the ladder.If you made a chore board for your family, add this working ladder part to the open side of your cork board by drawing a simple ladder in permanent marker. My ladder is two inches wide and the rungs are two inches apart.The privilege ladder has seven rungs. Each rung has different privileges the children earn which we list on a separate ladder you see in this picture. Wow, not bad for a $15 Chardonnay. From Russian River Valley, this 2003 white wine from Hook and Ladder has a nice balance between oak, creaminess and acidity. The winemaker sais appel on the palate, I say rhubarb. This is a very nice sip-it-by-it-self wine enjoyed in a casual setting with your friends. It was awarded 88 point from Wine and Spirit.
