Creating and Caring For A Labyrinth
As I've noted on my web page, some colleagues and I recently constructed a walking labyrinth in a previously unused portion of yard behind my office property. For those who don't know, a labyrinth is a path, usually circular, that twists and turns toward a center destination and then out again. Labyrinths have been used for centuries in various cultures throughout the world, often representing

Following ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ Regresses From Best to Worst For Guillermo del Toro
CHICAGO – Hellboy is plugged as the world’s brawniest, kitten-loving superhero. While that paradox is supposed to be both funny and action packed, “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” from famed writer and director Guillermo del Toro falls flat on the funny front and instead winds up on the funny farm. Rating: 2.5/5.0 Amid a superhero-laden 2008 with true blockbusters including “The Dark Kn

Wir sind Helden (We Are Heroes), a four-piece from Berlin are a favourite. Here's ‘Labyrinth’ from their latest album, ‘Soundso’. It won't get a spin on the indie dance floor but it's one for the headphones late at night. Cyclic and introspective, it builds to a calm wash of guitars, with singer Judith Holofernes's voice sounding ever more plaintive, lost in a maze. TKWir sind Helden - LabyrinthWatch The Video To Von

Netflix Review In A Minute: Pan's Labyrinth
What a great movie...which is kind of surprising coming from a director attached to the movie Hell Boy and the soon to be released, Hell Boy 2....but it was great!I initially thought it'd be more "Alice in Wonderland-esque", and that it wouldn't really balance the time between the real world, and some magical, demon-fairy filled world, like it did, but I'm still pleased. The Captain just amazed me at his fascist cruelty, and he had some of the most gruesome and bloody scenes in the film. The only scene I liked seeing, of those, was the one between The Captain and Mercedes. Mercedes quickly became my favorite over Ofelia. Ofelia was cute and all, and I know she's a child....but that scene where she draws a door on the way to retrieve a key and isn't allowed to eat ANYTHING...of course she d

      Pan’s Labyrinth
I finally got round to watching this after it sitting in a box in my house for months. It was well worth the wait. Mark Kermode called it the best film of 2006, I rarely agree with Mark but on this one he was dead right - it wasn’t just the best film of 2006 but the best fantasy…the best faerie film I have ever seen. Beautifully shot, deliciously dark and wonderfully ambiguous. Del Toro weaves established features of Faerie with a character driven story set in the post-civil war period in Spain, the result takes the genre in a new and enchanting manner. The film tells the story of Ofelia, a ten-year-old girl at the end of the Spanish civil war of the 1930s, who is taken to the countryside where her mother is to give birth to her brother in the presence of her deeply disturbed fascist stepfather (Vidal). Arriving at her stepfather’s country house she befriends an insect that turns out to be more than it seems leading her to a strange creature that calls itself a faun

Really good. Not something you're going to want to see fifty times like Star Wars, but good. This film much improves my opinion of del Toro, which was damaged by what he did to Hellboy. The English title is a bad translation. The movie should be called The Faun's Labyrinth. There is neither explicit nor implicit indication in the film that the faun is supposed to be the god Pan. This caused me some confusion, but no matter. It's 1944 Spain. "I consider Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, and Babel sister films, three films that speak about similar themes. I think that the theme of ideology as a world between the communication of people is a common theme of the three films."--Alfonso Cuaron, director of "Children of Men."Guillermo del Toro sets Pan's Labyrinth in 1944 Spain, and like The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, has a militaristic point of departure for his fantasy. However, Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) never actually departs from this situation. Del Toro's fantasy follows a little girl, Ofelia, as she travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother's new husband, a harsh man and a captain in Franco's military, in a mountainous rural area of northern Spain. The story weaves her fantasy world - full of fairies, fauns, and magic - with the oppression of the post-war Fascist regime.Pan's Labyrinth is not a movie for children and one would hope that the viewing public realizes that fantasy a
