Labour boat sinks at Henley's political regatta
New Labour is falling apart. Not before time, I'd say. The Henley by-election has given the Labour Party a drubbing. Put their supporters in the same room as Bananaman's lot and the ORMLP could claim to have done reasonably well by comparison. Labour nearly came below the 1,000 vote barrier, a pyschological electric fence. As it was they lost their deposit, trailing behind the Green Party and the

Mr Obama is in a commanding position, leading in the delegate count and edging closer towards the 2,025 needed.Pressure is beginning to form on Mrs Clinton to withdraw as the nomination looks like a distance memory. Unless she can convince the Democratic Party that Florida and Michigan should be allowed their delegates (they should not), her chances of defeating Mr Obama are slim. Without Florida and Michigan, she would require about 70 per cent of the remaining delegates. It increasingly looks like the Democrats' superdelegates will decide the nomination. Mr Obam

Labour — with Brown leading them into elections for the first time since taking office last year — was set to finish third behind opposition Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, according to near-complete results. The ruling party could face further humiliation in the closely-fought London mayoral race, which pitched the current mayor, Labour's Ken Livingstone, against the Conservatives' maverick Boris Johnson. "It's clear to me that this has been a disappointing night, indeed a bad night for Labour," Brown told reporters, linking Labour's performance to the effects of the global credit crunch. The vulgarity of New Labour
Just after PMQs today the Government moved the writ for a by-election in Crewe and Nantwich. This election is caused by the death of Gwyneth Dunwoody, the fiesty Labour MP who was a long-serving proponent of traditional socialist values. Because of the undue haste in pushing this election through (the funeral hasn't yet been held) some members rightly felt this was unfortunate. Nicholas Winterton (Conservative MP for Macclesfield) and Simon Hughes, for the Liberal Democrats, both voiced sadness at this move. When Ann Winterton (Conservative MP for Congleton and wife of Nicholas) spoke, she was interrupted by John Spellar. When Spellar eventually rose, it was to speak in the typically vulgar tones associated with his side of the house.I noticed Geoff Hoon, the Chief Whip, looking decidedly

      Ken Livingstone-New Labour's Fairweather Friend
What a difference eight years makes.Remember 2000? Frank Dobson was Labour's candidate and Livingstone was running as an independent.Back then Gordon Brown was warning us not to vote for him"He is anti-jobs and anti-business".How anyone can be anti-jobs is beyond me. Maybe Gordon meant to say Livingstone was bad for job creation. Now Brown's fearing a resurgant Tory party, something that wasn't a problem in 2000, when William Hague led the Tories further rightwards. He calls Ken a "crusading mayor" and campaigns with him.Livingstone has also recently been critical of Brown, saying in 2006 he would campaign against New Labour if Crossrail (linking Heathrow Airport and the City) did not go ahead. If Ken Livingstone wins Gordon Brown should hold the press conference in a karaoke bar.Reaching for

Larkin: the apostle of labour solidarity
In Dublin, 61 years ago, March 1947, an immense crowd of people, 200,000 of them, many of the men bare-headed in freakishly Arctic weather, marched behind the coffin of Jim Larkin. Larkin was the founder of the modern Irish labour movement. He is the greatest figure in Irish labour history. James Connolly, Larkin's partner between 1910 and 1914, was far more clever and far better educated, but it was Larkin who touched the workers of the slums with the holy fire of righteous indignation, and ignited them in revolt. Larkin was a union organiser in Liverpool, Belfast, Dublin and in the USA — where he was jailed in the aftermath of World War One. He was a founder of the US Communist Party and a — none too competent — leader of an Irish communist party in the '20s. A man of con

      Labour lament
Recent polls make grim reading for Gordon Brown. YouGov has the Conservatives with a 16 point lead, with Labour remaining under 30 per cent (28 per cent). This means Labour are losing more than swing voters, they are losing their core vote. Bad news for Brown, especially when his low approval ratings are taken into account. If this wounding was not bad enough, YouGov provide some salt in the result that if Tony Blair were still leader the Conservative lead would be slashed to just 5 points (voters looking back to halcyon days, I imagine).Predictably, voters are gloomy about the future of the economy and think the government overspends and overtaxes. Brown's reputation as a floundering ditherer seems to now be entrenched in the minds of voters, and like pessimism over the economy this is di

Labour inspectors shut down unsafe building site
Newcastle - Life-threatening working conditions to construction workers prompted Labour inspectors to order an immediate shut down of a Newcastle building site in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. This followed the officials' finding of unsafe scaffolding at the Thashcrete Construction site at Voortrekker Street. The officials served the supervisor with a prohibition notice that effectively stopped all workers from using the structure. The scaffolding was allegedly erected on loose bricks with no scaffolding supervisor being appointed on site. read more

Mean Labour in a fantasy tax world!
Ed Miliband, the thrusting younger brother of David Miliband, says of the 10p tax band abolition, "It's a matter of regret that some people lose, but overall more people gain than lose as a result of this Budget. The biggest gains go to the poorest people in society, particularly people with children." He must be doing all this on the back of an envelope! 5.3 million people will be worse off. They are the poorest in society. This represents about 10% of the taxpaying public.Of course, Mean Labour doesn't know how many people will be affected, because they are in denial. Jane Kennedy was on Newsnight last night boasting almost that she was the most unpopular minister in Britain. She couldn't answer the question about how many were affected. The woman's a total disaster!David Cameron is righ

New Labour kicks back at the poor!
Whatever I may think of the New Labour regime, I always imagined they might keep some semblance of socialist thinking in their brains when it came to helping the poor. Under Blair, this wretched party grovelled around dubious millionares, sought the affections of pop stars and celebrities, and generally got about the business of making sure their own troughs were full first. But watching John Hutton on television trying to say that the decision to abolish the lowest income tax band wouldn't be that bad, I thought I can't wait to see them put out to grass. Hopeless is not the word for them!Low income families are going to be hard hit. They are going to have to face up to annual income losses of between £50 and £300. Some kind of socialism! It stinks and Hutton should be ashamed of himself.

Very tempting.Labour have been somewhat behind on the youth front for while and have failed to gain a serious following from the younger generation - apart from muesli eating Guardian reading students. Perhaps it's because the left is more prone to infighting that they have not had much success in uniting under a single banner. Moreover, as the British media is shockingly left leaning there is little ambition for rallying together and networking with one another. On the other hand, the Tories are a dab hand at promoting themselves amongst the youth and even have training seminars designed to improve debating skills and teach budding Tories how to deal with the Media (HERE).Iain Dale has previously noted (HERE) the importance of groom future leaders here because being media savvy and handling th

Top Labour donor cautious amid dodgy dealings
As a result of the dodgy donations by David Abrahams, one of Labours top donors, Willie Haughley, has said he will stop donating to the party until the funding crisis is over. When someone is banged up, presumably. If those enthusiastic enough to give money to political parties are stopping doing so it's only indicative of the wider distrust with which people regard politicians. Donorgate has seriously undermined Labour and looks even worse because of Brown's constant preaching about his moral compass. In scandals such as this, all politicians get tarred with the same brush which is why Cameron has frequently been heard saying that "we all get things wrong in party funding" in order not to appear as someone engaging in ecstatic schadenfreude at Labour's expense. The public don't like gloating and it would be unwise to do so as Ashcroft is hardly whiter than white.

      Labour lawyers helped set-up donorgate.
A shocking article in the Grauniad today (HERE) states how Labour party officials and lawyers knew about Abrahams' funding arrangements and, in fact, set them up for him.The covenants drawn up four years ago were thought to exploit a loophole in the Political Parties Act and were created to ensure that Abraham's associates, Janet Kidd and Ray Ruddick and McCarthy, spent the money as he intended. It would also ensure he didn't pay tax on the money given to them. A Labour informer has said that two officials were then responsible for "shepherding the cash". Cox has reported before how identity theft may be involved in donor gate. So, donorgate has taken a new turn for the worst. We still don't know whether it was Abrahams' idea or Labour's to give money through third parties but if they were actively setting this up who knows what they're capable of. It will be interesting to see how Sir Michael White, the BBC's resident apologist for New Labour, tries to shove this under the carp

Identitity theft in Labour donor sleaze?
There has been some speculation over the inclusion of identity theft in the long list of convictions that MPs involved in the sleaze scandal could be charged with. Dealing With Labour Pain
Mothers report that few things are as painful, or as rewarding, as giving birth. How much pain, for how long and when varies enormously among individual women. But expectant women, especially when giving birth the first time, may want less pain in order to better enjoy the reward. For them, there are many choices. Most experts and women agree that the less medication taken or anesthesia given the better, both for mother and child. When used the amounts are so low that problems are very rare, but anything that enters a woman's bloodstream will affect the child during delivery. Training can help minimize the need.Preparation well before the onset of labor is the first step. Lamaze or Bradley training is helpful, in order to learn good breathing and relaxation techniques. It's difficult to focus on the process rather than the pain when you're in the moment, but training can get her part way there. Attending with a partner is particularly helpful. Some training involves learning focusing
