Limones indios, small but sweetI have a real knack for picking out lemons. Not the fruit. You know: the 'lemons'. Those stinkin' products where I could have selected 15 other brands, some even cheaper, but no, I had to have the lemon.Case in point: My Maytag Neptune washer/dryer combo. Isn't Maytag known for reliability and quality? What about that lonely Maytag repairman that I've seen on TV all

      Gnarly Lemons
Is it just me, or have you ever noticed that gnarly lemons give the most juice? I was about to toss these lemons and I decided to give them a reaming (although they had never done anything to me personally). Wow, they performed in a big way AND the juice tasted just fine. I'm sorry for anything bad I ever said about them.

I am pleased to say I have re-opened my shop; however, you will notice it is on a much more limited scale. Due to time constraints in my personal life, I don't think I'll be able to offer as many products as before. I am pre-sewing everything now so I am currently scalling back on the baby clothes. This won't be forever, I promise.. but will be for a while. I am working on some new toddler clothes and hope to get those in my shop in the next month or two. In the meantime, I have a sale on some of my winter collection and just introduced my brooke dress/top. These are all sewn and ready for immediate shi

Why does furniture polish have real lemons but food has artificial lemon flavor?
Some things just don't make sense with our food and of course life, but this post is food and health related. Have you ever wondered why food products have artificial Lemon flavor and furniture polish has real lemons? When people inhale the first smoke from a cigarette they get dizzy, light headed and feel nauseous but they keep puffing thinking, oh I'll get used to it. But, if they taste food that makes them dizzy, light headed and nauseous they think, oh this food is bad I'm not going to eat it. When people witness a car accident on icy roads they think, oh the road is slippery over there so I'll use the other lane. When people are at a funeral of someone who has died of disease due to a bad diet they eat the same kind of bad food with the family after the funeral. Nobody would let a

At the Old Bailey this week, a neighbour of the murdered teenage model Sally-Anne Bowman described how she discovered the body behind a skip. "I just felt I knew what I would see," she told the court, which was attended by the dead woman's parents. "It was not going to be a model or a mannequin. I just related it to the screams." Bearing in mind Bowman's professed occupation, these were an unfortunate choice of words. In Tuesday's Independent, within its story headlined "Tesco hits a new low with arrival of the £1.99 chicken", a TV chef named "High Fearnley-Whittingstall" appeared. I sent the paper an email titled "Independent hits a new High" to point out the mistake, but they did not respond, and the story still exists uncorrected online. This has all reminded me of a sub-editor I once em

When Life Gives You Lemons, Hand Them to a Toddler
A couple more pictures from last weekend--The lemons in the backyard are screaming to be picked, so I thought this would be a fun activity to do with our niece. She went bananas over the lemons. At first I didn't have my camera with me, so as soon as I realized this would be a picture taking event, I snatched the lemon out of her hand (which immediately led to crying and for some reason she didn't seem to understand or care when I explained to her that I only did it for the sake of documenting the fragility of her youth--it seemed perfectly logical to me). After running through the house and up the stairs as quickly as I could to grab a camera, with a crying, almost two year old on my hip (those daily two mile walks are starting to pay off), we resumed our task of lemon picking::These a

Well, maybe Fawzan a little.I first started blogging a long, long, long time ago – last March in fact, so not long in the hours and days sense but in more esoteric ways. He doesn’t fear criticism, and uses others’ input in a valuable, constructive manner. That’s admirable, considering how fragile artists’ egos are. Many of our favorites got hit hard, and the sentiment plummeted when many earnings results didn’t hit there mark. It’s time to get busy, investors need to look at this break in the action as a warning sign. Things may not be exactly as they seem. The market is still near record highs, and one of our favorites, Goldman Sachs (GS), is suffering greatly, losing more than twenty points in recent weeks. The point is, be patient, don’t panic, and wait for another move lower before buying in. Disclosure: Long Goldman Sachs (GS)

      You must know your lemons
Believe it or not lemons are a great natural resource, they are natural and very useful and can be used for a lot of things from food, drinks, cleaning and some things that maybe we all would not even think about. So how about ten things that lemons can be useful for: 1. Grow a lemon tree - the most eco-friendly thing to do with lemons is grow them so that you have your own carbon neutral supply. 2. Highlight your hair - much better for you and the environment than commercial bleaches. Mix the juice of one lemon with one teaspoon of salt and apply to your hair with a comb. Get out into the sun for a couple of hours. Do some vegetable gardening, tend your lemon tree, go for a walk, you get the picture. Don’t do this too often; it will dry your hair out. 3. Exfoliate and clean your feet - mix up some lemon pulp and brown sugar and get rubbing. Rinse and moisturize. 4. Combat bad breath - gargle with lemon juice to get rid of bad breath. 5. Fight off a cold - mix lemon juice with honey

Max is back home recuperating after the rodding surgery on his arm to repair his fracture. This caused a stir at the hospital causing us to now run around gathering up paperwork but that's a whole other story that has my head swimming and I'll post about it soon. What a fiasco. Like I need such drama in my life. Bob picked me up a new camera today. This time I promise to take good care of it and not leave it out to tempt sticky fingers from taking it. I'm thinking what most likely happened to it is somebody borrowed it without asking , accidentally dropped and broke it , then figured it was best not to put it back like that but just get rid of the evidence. Hopefully , somebody learned a lesson.Received a phone call this evening from the residential center that Ebony had deliberately slammed her head th

Lemonade — Still stuck on lemons
A friend was at our house the other day. It was an early afternoon, and I offered lemonade. Realizing I was out, I poured the last glass and said, “Hold on, I’ll make some more.” “What do you mean, you’ll make some more?” she inquired. She was unaware that people made lemonade. It does not all come from gallon jugs, and it is an incredibly simple and thoughtful concoction to offer your guests. Here, I give you three variations: Steph’s Lemonade This basic blend is the reason our household buys RealLemon juice in bulk. 1 C. fresh lemon juice or RealLemon 1 C. Because I'm Not Especially Fond Of Lemons.
The first night in the dorm my freshman year of college, the Resident Assistants had everyone on my floor meet for a get-to-know-you session. We all sat in a circle and played a simple name game. The first person had to say their name along with a descriptive word that began with the same letter of their name. For example: Caring Cara - you know, because Cara is caring. Or Cara Crayons - because Cara likes to color with crayons. The next person had to repeat that information and then add their own name and descriptive word. It went on and on until everyone in the circle had a turn. I remember sitting there, trying to pay attention to the names so I wouldn’t mess up when my turn came, all the while searching for a brilliant and memorable word to attach to my name. When my turn finally arrived, I recited the list of names perfectly. “Smiling Sarah…Gregarious Gretchen…Karen Kahlua…and I’m….” I struggled for a word. My mind raced

BIRD: Well, that went well. BUFFALO: Sure did. BIRD: And the, ah-hm, donations are flying in. BUFFALO: Yowzer to that, dude. Got holes in me socks and I need a new hooter. BIRD: Hmm. Yes. Anyhoo, you know that Jeremy guy? BUFFALO: The one who's got a blog called jeremyindiapers or somefink? BIRD: In pants. Jeremyinpants. Nothing on it yet, but we'll keep an eye out for developments. Well, he wrote us the mostest coolest e-mail. BUFFALO: Respect. BIRD: So good, infarct, that I reproduce it here for your highest of pleasures. BUFFALO: Right-o. BIRD: And he writes: "Dear Bird & Buffalo, Last year I lost my wife, my cat, my goat, my mind and my rare Mongolian birds stamp collection. And then you two loons came into my life. Lemons or Limes?
Are these lemons or limes? When I first came to Honduras, I thought that we only had limes available here. El Jefe informed me that they were green lemons, not limes. I wondered why the lemons were picked green, but then I learned later why the lemons were green. Our lemons look much different than the large, thick-skinned, elliptical yellow fruits that you see in U.S. grocery stores. They are generally small, round, thin-skinned, and almost never have seeds. Sounds like limes, doesn't it? Actually, after awhile I began to wonder if I had just forgotten the difference between the taste of lemon and lime and wasn't even sure what I was using anymore.I couldn't understand why we couldn't find limes. Limes are very popular for many recipes of Central American and Caribbean countries and for some of my Tex-Mex recipes, limes are the thing and lemons just won't do. And for Margaritas? Limes! We asked at every vivero (plant nursery) if they had limas (limes). Most didn't even know what w

LeMons Update: Black Metal V8olvo Is Nigh
As the 24 Hours of LeMons May 10 race date draws closer, my teammates in Northern California continue to clang, weld and bleed all over our Volvo 244 with a Ford V8 stuffed into the bay. Despite the audacity of our entry, we're quite fortunate to have two "veteran" hotrod builders on staff, Wayne and Dave. You know what they say, old guys rule. According to reports from the garage, these two can fabricate, fix or bend anything to their will. Amazingly, Wayne made the Volvo's throttle components work with our Holley carb. Awesome. Other progress notes of note include a completed fuel filler system Sawzalled right through the trunk lid using the factory Volvo cap, a hood scoop (adds several hundred horsepower, no doubt), the majority of the wiring plus the gauges and the bra

24 Hours of LeMons: It’s On!
Mr. Mehta, and Mr. Lieberman, I fear not your V8olvo, nor your red-benecked Lincoln, as I have ditched my Audi 4000 quattro beater (due to many eaten axles, a blown head gasket, and more electrical issues than British Leyland) for something truly unholy. For $0, yes, zero dinero, I have scored a full-on, 260bhp (stock!) 1991 Audi V8 quattro. A car so legendary, that it was banned from the IMSA GTO and German DTM series. Come to think of it, quattro has been banned from rallying, IMSA, DTM and probably the real LeMans in the future... from what has yours been banned for "unfair advantage" recently? Vorsprung durch technik uber alles! Sincerely, Captain Mike Solowiow Future LeMons Champion

24 Hour LeMons: Carbon Fiber Madness!
For Audi fans, Tresser was THE modifier in the 1980's and 1990's. The firm created a very quick (and sought after) Audi 5000 Turbo (Audi 200 in Europe), a Quattro convertible (capital Q), and many others. I happened to stumble upon one of Tresser's last creations, a slightly used Audi 200 Turbo quattro. While the engine, interior, and body panels were rotted, the carbon fiber hood and trunk-lid were not. Mr. Mehta and Mr. Lieberman, you can no longer call my Audi V8 quattro "fat", like me, we are both turning into lean, mean muscled machines that will obliterate all Lincolns/Volvos in our path. Quattro uber alles!

LeMons Update: The Black Metal V8olvo Has Paint
The boys hauled the V8olvo (an '84 Volvo 244 with a Ford V8 of some vintage stuffed under the hood) up to Thunderhill for some pre-race diagnostics. The good news: we have good handling, sufficient power and adequate brakes. If you think I'm holding my cards close to my vest, I am. The bad news? A cooling problem and the oil pump seized. But that was before the crew pulled off three heroic 14-hour days in a row. Now we have the radiator from a 560SEL chilling down all 302 cubic inches. In fact, the V8olvo is in such dominating shape that it received a paint job. Yes sir, that's a Swedish Rebel Flag. With the 13 stars of the CSA. Representing what, we have no idea, but Judah Benjamin would be proud.

LeMons Update: Black Metal V8olvo Wows ‘Em at the Car Show
Well friends, tomorrow is the big race (my birthday as it turns out). Yesterday, Speed:Sport:Life's own Jack Baruth and I assisted our lead mechanic Dave (aka Hellhammer) put the final touches on the V8olvo. And I'm proud to report, she's beautiful. So beautiful in fact that we simply had to take it down to an every-other-Thursday type car show to let the vintage domestic aficionados know what some seriously grim and frostbitten Gothenburg steel looks like. Surprisingly, they loved it. Actually, it's not so surprising. I mean, what's not to love about a 1984 Volvo 244 stuffed with a Ford 302 and a five-speed? Plus a radiator from a 560SEL. Springs and sway bar from Thunderbird. Oh, and fans. Lots and lots of fans. We figured we might as well show our LeMons racer off t

LeMons Update: Team Black Metal V8olvo Finished 15th
What a race. Ninety cars started the event. I have no idea how many cars finished the race, but it was a lot fewer than that. Due to inexperience and a poor game plan, we were in 47th position on Saturday when sadly and quite horribly, another driver -- Cort Summerfield -- died of a heart attack behind the wheel. The CHP determined there was no mechanical failure and that Cort was dead before he h

24 Hours of LeMons Altamont: Max Mosley Penalty
There are numerous reasons why the running of the 24 Hours of LeMons represents the world's best motor racing. Driver skill, huge purses and fancy machinery blistering around the track using the latest in high tech whizbangs aren't amongst them. Even so, LeMons isn't just a bunch of junk heaps running around a track bashing into each other. It's a bunch of junk heaps running a

LeMons Update: Mad Cow Cops a ThunderChicken
If there's two things a LeMons racing team needs, it's a catchy (but stupid) name and a valuable parts car. Thanks to Troy Hogan, our crew's chief lunatic, team "Mad Cow Motorsportz" has a Thunderbird Turbo snagged from the lonely pages of Craigslist. Just what we need-- another hunk of shit Fox body, right? Not! This $250 purchase paid for itself immediately, since the Miami V

LeMons Update: the Fox moves aside for a Fairlady
I think the Pistonhead's natural enemy is the home owner's association. There's no overnight curbside parking, no car covers and  zero chance of enjoying the suburban lifestyle while keeping your  toys. Then again, their rules and egos worked to our favor: our  team, Mad Cow Motorsportz, now has a power player [...]
