Tverskaya, a street with the Kremlin at its southern tip, is now the third most expensive place to shop, eclipsed only by New York's Fifth Avenue and the Champs Elysées in Paris. Known as Gorky Street in Soviet times, the resurgence of Tverskaya is another example of the dramatic turnaround in Russia's economy since energy prices began to soar at about the time that Vladimir Putin became presiden

Russian reporter who authored book critical of Kremlin granted asylum in Britain
A Russian reporter who wrote a book critical of the Kremlin and later escaped injury in a bomb explosion said today that Britain has given her political asylum. Thirty-four-year-old Yelena Tregubova said her life was in grave danger in Russia. Tregubova's 2003 book "Tales of a Kremlin Digger," accused President Vladimir Putin of stifling freedom of speech and turning Russian media into a propaganda machine for the Kremlin. Tregubova, who wrote for the influential Russian daily Kommersant, also suggested that Putin tried to seduce her when he headed the country's top security agency. ~ full article ~

Kremlin warns Britain to shed Cold War mentality
The Kremlin gave Britain warning yesterday that there would be no improvement in relations until it abandoned Cold War-hostility towards Russia. Its annual diplomatic review appeared to dash hopes of a fresh start

Kremlin Wants to Control the Blogosphere
Don’t worry, if you are not living in Russia you have nothing to worry about, but for all of the Russians out there it might be bad news. The information came from Washington Post, so if you are interested read it for yourself from the source, but as a blogger I just want to say that I strongly believe in the right of free speech and I think that Kremlin’s behavior is unacceptable. I think that free media is very important and that other bloggers will agree with me as well. At the moment there is talk of creating a new Russian computer network - one that would be separate from the Internet at large and, potentially, much easier for the authorities to control. Well I hope that it doesn’t happen.

Russia to claim North Pole: Kremlin sends submarine to plant flag in Arctic stunt for oil control
In June we learned that Russia wanted to make claim to the North Pole, this angered many countries but this has not stopped Russia and have now sent a submarine which plans to plant a flag under the North Pole. This is part of the Kremlin’s efforts to lay claim to the arctic which has a massive amount of energy resources. Arctic explorer Artur Chilingarov, is the veteran explorer who is to descend 14,000 feet into the depths of the sea, and will then drop a Russian tricolor which has been cast in titanium onto the seabed. Russia has many rivals all have all been eager to grab a piece of the Arctic as it is rich in oil resources, in fact it is thought that the North Pole has at least a quarter of the worlds energy resources which is untapped. It is believed that there is at least 10 billion barrels of oil at the North Pole. Read more on this story Written by Peter for Product ReviewsIn Sections: News

Pentagon Invites Kremlin to Link Missile Systems
Why technology sharing won’t work with the Russians. Our leaders keep making the same mistake over and over again when dealing with the Russians. We will make brash public statements about sharing anti missile defense technology with the and wonder why we get such a chilly reception. What Washington still doesn’t see is that Americans are like the rich preppies driving the new Ferrari inviting the kids from the poor side of town on a cruise to the beach. But the poor kids ’78 Oldsmobile won’t start half the time and when it does run it always overheats. Back during the space race days NASA spent about a million dollars developing a pen that would work in zero gravity for our astronauts to use in space. The Soviets had their cosmonauts use pencils instead. And that's a perfect example of how America and Russia approach things differently. The Russians just plain do not have the economic wherewithal to keep up with us on any technologically advanced military systems and they know it.

Gherkin Takes Kremlin, Check! A Tale of Chess with Ice
Whether you heard about it via The Moscow Times or CNN, MSNBC or The Guardian, The Gulf Daily News or The Washington Post, The BBC or ABC, or just good old Chessbase - chances are you heard about it. I mean the Moscow-London Chess Ice Match, in which a team headed by Anatoly Karpov took on a team headed by Nigel Short, at around this painful time yesterday morning. & what can little old us add to all that reporting, I hear you ask? Ah! A rather splendid eye-witness account and some exclusive photos (click to enlarge, see end of article for more) all courtesy of R J Christie:"It was all a bit surreal: Trafalgar Square on a chilly January morning, spotlights, camera crews, a giant TV screen, a small crowd of onlookers, not to mention a giant chessboard (64 square metres) complete with 32 one metre high pieces sculpted entirely from ice!"A similar scene could be seen on the big screen - beamed live from Pushkin Square in Moscow, just slightly later in the day and a little colder."The oc
