      Whitmarsh delighted with Kovalainen
Martin Whitmarsh is delighted by the manner in which McLaren have started the 2008 world championship but has called on all of his staff to raise their game even further ahead of the next race in Bahrain. The British squad was hampered by a qualifying penalty which saw both Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton docked five grid places, with the Finn eventually come home third and his team-mate back in fifth."Heikki did a terrific job. He and his crew developed his car’s set-up to the point that he was quicker than Lewis in qualifying - even though he had a marginally heavier fuel load," Whitmarsh explained."He did an excellent job in the race, too. Despite a five-position grid penalty, for obstructing another car during qualifying, he recovered to finish third. Without it I’m confident h

Kovalainen, Hamilton to lose five grid places

They will now start the race eighth and ninth respectively.Kovalainen and Hamilton were called before the stewards after suggestions that BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld and Renault’s Fernando Alonso were impeded during their final Q3 runs, when the McLaren drivers were conserving fuel on slowing-down laps, both having completed their final runs."The first corners of my last lap went smoothly, but then there were several cars driving very slowly on their in-laps,” said Heidfeld, who qualified seventh, but will now start fifth. “Apparently they had no information that the

      F1: Q&A with Heikki Kovalainen
In this Q&A released by McLaren Heikki Kovalainen tackles head-on the issues of driver equality, getting on with Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso's exit and the politics which gave his new team such a testing time in 2007. Credit: Vodafone McLaren Mercedes How does it feel to be a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver? It feels fantastic, thank you. The team has always been popular in Finland because of both Mika and Kimi's involvement, so when I was growing up there was a massive awareness of McLaren Mercedes especially when Mika won the World Championship twice. I am so happy to be part of this team. There is a lot of work ahead of us, but I can't wait. When did you start talking to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes about a race drive? Once I had been informed by Renault about their driver plans my management and I began to explore a number of options in Formula 1. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes was obviously an incredibly attractive opportunity and we began talking and here we are. I am ple

F1: it’s Kovalainen to partner Hamilton at McLaren
Photo credit: Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Lewis Hamilton’s new team-mate at McLaren is to be Heikki Kovalainen, the team revealed yesterday. Pedro de la Rosa, the other serious contender for the seat, is to remain as the team’s third driver while Gary Paffett will continue as a test driver. Kovalainen, who enjoyed a great rookie season with Renault after a shaky start (although perhaps not as great as Hamilton’s) has, in the words of the team, joined on a long-term contract and is due to start work in January. He follows in the footsteps of World Championship-winning Finns and former McLaren drivers Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen and Kimi Raikkonen (although only Hakkinen actually won while at McLaren). So the omens are looking pretty good for the young driver, and Hamilton may have his work cut out to stay in front of him. Kovalainen said: “I am so excited to join a team like Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. So far I have been blown away by the dedication and commitme

      Kovalainen to McLaren for '08
McLaren's latest FinnAs predicted here a few days ago, Heikki Kovalainen has today been confirmed as a McLaren driver for 2008 alongside Lewis Hamilton. This will be a make-or-break assignment for the Finn, who could see his career over almost before it's begun should he be blown into the weeds by Hamilton next season. Something tells me he should give everyone's favourite wunderkind a decent run for his money, though - I reckon his straightforward, no-politics approach and professional work ethic should see him fit in nicely at the Woking outfit.

      Heikki Kovalainen Goes to McLaren
The announcement came today that Heikki Kovalainen has signed with McLaren.  Kovalainen joins McLaren after he was dropped from Renault to make room for the returning Fernando Alonso.  It had been speculated earlier after pressure from Spanish Sponsors that McLaren may choose current test driver Pedro de la Rosa, but in the end Kovalainen was the obvious choice and Pedro de la Rosa will remain as test driver. The pairing at McLaren will be Lewis Hamilton and Kovalainen, two very young and talented drivers who had an impressive rookie season last year.  CEO Martin Whitmarsh sounded genuinely pleased with the signing and had this to say:  "We had a number of options open to us and as always we want to make sure that we have the most competitive driver line-up and I think that Lewis and Heikki will be a formidable combination" Kovalainen is very excited to be selected to join the team and has signed what is termed a ‘long term’ contract.
