By Michael Smith, North American Correspondent, MedPage Today WASHINGTON, May 8 — Surgery using beams of radiation appears to benefit half of patients with highly refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder, a researcher said here. The procedure — a ventral capsular/ventral striatal gamma capsulotomy — uses a Leksell gamma knife to target brain regions known to be involved in obsessive-compulsive disorder, according to Antonio Lopes, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Gamma Knife is a neurosurgical device used to treat brain tumors with radiation therapy. The device was invented by Lars Leksell, a Swedish neurosurgeon, in 1967 at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. The Leksell Gamma Knife device contains 201 cobalt-60 sources of approximately 30 curies (1.1 TBq) each, placed in a circular array in a heavily shielded assembly. The device aims gamma radiation through a target point in the patient's brain. The patient wears a specialized helmet that is surgically fixed to their skull so that the brain tumor remains stationary at target point of the gamma rays. A killing dose of radiation is thereby sent through the tumor in one treatment session, while all surrounding brain tissues receive less than a killing dose.FEATURES OF GAMMA KNIFERadiosurgery uses hi

Tyler Hemmert Gets Butter Knife Stuck in His Head
11 year old Tyler Hemmert survived after a butter knife was stuck in his head when another boy became angry with him and his friend and hurled the knife. He was lucky that the knife only grazed his skull. Doctors was able to remove and he was left with a five stitches and a story to tell.“The CAT scan showed that indeed it was just under his scalp,” Dr. Andy Reed told NBC News reporter John Larson. “There were no fractures obvious to the skull.” Tyler, who equated the pain to a bee sting, left the hospital with just five stitches. “I’m feeling fine right now,” he said. “It doesn’t hurt right now at all.” With the scar has also come some notoriety for Tyler. Some friends, he says, have even called him “Butterhead.” Link

      Knife teaches stick and hand
Another concept, related to knife changes nothing, is an idea from the CSSD Modern Arnis guys, Blade teaches stick (and empty-hand) but stick does not teach blade. (I hope I quoted that right) Even though I was an utter rank beginner in the tiny little bit of experience I have with the CSSD guys, I especially liked this knife system because it was so much like the aiki ideas that we preach. I suspect that having this knife changes nothing basis to our aikido is part of what makes the two systems so comparable and so compatible. If you learn the knife aspect of the art first (like in CSSD) or if you manage to convince yourself that every opponent is as dangerous as a knife guy (like we try to do in aikido) then you don’t develop the laxness and complacency that comes with thinking that the

      Knife changes nothing
I've mentioned this before in passing, but I wanted to bring some attention to it in today's post. In aikido (or judo or karate or etc...) we mostly practice empty-handed, but occasionally put a simulated knife in the hand of the attacker. It it not that we want to emphasize those ridiculous "knife defenses" that are the bread and butter of so many martial arts classes - so why do we even mess with a knife?.Simply put, the addition of a knife highlights a particular weakness in the defender's mindset. That is, if the defender suddenly becomes sharper, more alert, quicker, and more precise when a knife is thrown into the mix, then he was under-estimating the potential of the unarmed attacker..As you practice aikido, you absolutely have to treat every single uke as if they are the most da

Knife racks have always appeared to be fascinating and cool to me. The very idea of such beautiful 'weapons' piled up neatly in my mum's favorite corner in the house invoked a lot of pleasure and excitement in me every time I went to reach for one. Times have changed and those worn out wooden stands no longer are in vogue. These cool magnetic knife racks can really give your kitchen that extra bit of oomph. The magnetic face is strong enough to hold the knives erect and perpendicular to the ground so that they can stare threateningly at the potatoes on the chopping board. The Magnetic Knife Rack is probably going to be my gift to mum this thanksgiving. It costs just $40.

The idea came to Knork inventor Mike Miller while eating pizza with a group of friends. Trying to cut and eat pizza with just a fork, he realized he had a better idea. After several years he pursued a patent by researching and developing a prototype. He took a regular fork and covered it in auto putty with the hopes of creating a multi-functional utensil. After taking pictures of people of all ages using a regular fork, Miller combined all this into one utensil that was suitable for all ages and right or left handed users.

Good ideas seldom come alone. Or maybe they serve as inspiration for other designers and inventors. Look at this knife stand. A wooden box with a bunch of bamboo skewers, that allows knives to be placed at will. The first time we laid eyes on this idea was back in August 2005 when we stumbled upon Martin Robitsch's design. A little later we found Jörg Gätjens' interpretation that was even more minimalistic. And now we have encountered the Mikoto knife stand from French design firm Ekobo. It is available in three different sizes at USD 150:-, 95:- and 55:- respectively but they look very much like Martin Robitsch' design from 2005.

I love the way Rodney is willing to enunciate all his fears, but allows his friends and neighbors and listeners to let his spirit move their feet. I can finely dice a onion without much effort, debone a chicken, julienne a potato, cut a carrot into a brunoise, etc. - not half bad for an amateur chef like me.Well, despite what I think of my knife-wielding skills, I got taken to school this past weekend. My mom, who's in town visiting, wanted to make some low bock gow or turnip cakes for Karen and me. Most recipes for low bock gow call for grating the daikon radish that goes into the cake. However, my mom prefers to cut the radish instead so that it does not get too wet and soggy while it's being cooked.Watching my mom slice the daikon into a fine julienne was most impressive. Each cut was very clean and precise, and all of the strips were nearly unifor

Get Advice on Knife Sharpening [Knives] - SendMeRSS
Get Advice on Knife Sharpening [Knives] Getting your stone and steel ready for a big carving job? Need to figure out how, exactly, you use a stone and steel? The Knife Sharpening Tips blog is relatively new, but already has a good number of tips posted for both beginners and those looking to ... hone their technique (sorry). Their "Advice for new knife sharpeners," for instance, advises practicing first on cheaper blades and using more oil than you'd normally think:Throughout the entire process, you should be able to see a small pool of sharpening lubricant on the stone. If the honing oil or water changes color or gets streaky, that means there's debris trapped in it. Stop sharpening and rinse the stone off. Then, reapply your lubricant and get back to work. For a step-by-step sharpening tutorial, check out this Instrucables video guide. Photo by joi. Has Michael Jackson Gone Under The Knife Again?
Michael Jackson has been spotted wearing plasters on his face which has lead to speculation that he has gone under the knife again. Michael was photographed on a shopping expedition in Las Vegas wearing a fishing hat, a black scarf around his head and unsightly sticking papers plastered around his mouth and chin. I must say this looks extremely strange maybe he has just cut himself shaving but it is more and likely that he has gone under the knife. Why do you think he is wearing plasters on his face? source Written by Kerry for Product ReviewsIn Sections: Celebrity News, News

Book Chat: The Sharper Your Knife, The Less You Cry
The Sharper Your Knife the Less You Cry is journalist Kathleen Flinn’s account of her three years at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. After years as a highly competent “home cook” and work as a journalist and a high-powered corporate type, Flinn found herself in London and out of a job. Her sweetheart (who becomes her husband in the course of the book) encourages her to invest her life savings in her dream of attending Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, and training as a chef. This book was gratifying on so many levels that its hard to know where to begin. First, I guess, is the fact that Flinn is a “real” writer, and writes beautifully in a voice that is warm, humorous and engaging. She also writes with great insight into the human condition - her own, family members’ and that of fellow students, teachers, and even landlords. We root for her relationship with her fiancee, we are aghast at the bad behavior of the instant-coffee pushing landlord, and we pump our menta

Catching The Falling Knife That Is Ceradyne
Ceradyne (crdn) has been in free fall since reporting earnings on October 30, 2007. It has fell from it's peak of $84.41 and is trading today at only $42.42! Wall street was not impressed when Ceradyne guided to the low end of guidance and has been punishing this stock ever since. This company is trading at only a 7.99 P/E ratio which is basically saying that this company can't continue to grow it's bottom line.

"We think he may have a knife..."
My son has ADHD, and he has issues, but what child who's basically been abandoned by his family wouldn't? We have made great strides over the past four years with regard to what is and isn't appropriate behavior, the definition of "disrespectful" behavior, and in setting limits and boundaries. Even still, when left to his own devices, he will choose to do the wrong thing. Lately, he's been

Clif's Salmon Lasagna - have the electric knife handy
We're pretty gutsy around here when it comes to cooking/eating. I hardly ever follow a recipe exactly as it was written. This has apparently worn off on my husband. He has 1 dish that he can make....microwave chicken with cream of mushroom soup. He just doesn't really enjoy cooking.Lunch was interesting today.Clif has an office in the house. Most days he doesn't even get to go to his office because he's out making sales calls. In Atlanta traffic that can mean long days. On the days that he's at home I never know when he's coming up for lunch. Lunch time depends on how busy things are. This translates into him fixing his own lunch when he's here.Today he came up to eat about the time I was feeding the kids so we got to witness him fixing lunch. (He's not gonna like this post. But it makes me laugh.)Most days he fixes a salad and/or a sandwich. He's not a soup person, but he's a big pasta person. Today he had a craving for pasta. I didn't have any kind of pasta in the house ex

      - GIITTV singles club releases ?A Knife, A Camera and a Bang? by The Sailplanes as a free download single on the 26th of November. The Sailplanes are Stacey Hine and Tim Webster, two guitarists who share vocals. They formed in London two years ago with no pre-conceived notion as to where the band would go, just a mutual appreciation of noisy experimental music. They were later joined by Yola Rodowicz (percussion). Since then they've released four records of challenging, sharp, arty, experimental, noisy music to the acclaim of the UK underground. In June of this year they released their debut album: 'a second, or ten years later' on their own Redheaded Stepchild imprint. Clocking in at 18 minutes, consisting of eight taught tracks, the record garnered words of praise from everyone that heard it, including Drowned In Sound: ?That very debut is The Sailplanes' noisy, discordant, and succinct raison d'etre. In short ? it's awesome.? and iShotthedeputy: ?aggressively and wond
