The purpose of the card is not to elicit a reward or response but rather to be used in times of autonomy where the recipient can appreciate the act. Attorney Tries a Little Kindness to Get Celebrity Autographs
A little kindness goes a long way toward receiving signed letters and photos from celebrities, Oklahoma City attorney Bob Burke says. For historical figures, the task also requires determination and knowing where to look. The Oklahoma City attorney and former broadcaster ought to know, considering his claim of collecting about 10,000 autographs during the past 45 years.Burke recently donated political memorabilia to the University of Oklahoma Libraries, including the signatures of every president and vice president in U.S. history.American history is ‘about people'The "Bob Burke Autographs of American Leaders” exhibit is open at Bizzell Memorial Library, 401 W Brooks."American history is not about places and events, it's about people,” Burke said at the exhibit's opening. Killed by kindness
Last night at Obedience class we got some rather horrible news. Einstein the Poodle died. Einstein and his mom joined us for training the first time less than a month ago. Einstein was a sweet, smart, red Miniature Poodle. He'd just been adopted from a rescue group that week. And his new mom was thrilled with him - he was a wonderful companion. She had big plans for him, including Obedience competition. She seemed to be doing everything right. But she was too nice to Einstein. Since he'd had a rough time and was such a good boy, she couldn't face putting him in a crate or cage when she left the house. While she was gone one day this week, Einstein ate a tube of something he found in the bathroom. And the emergency veterinarian couldn't save him. So, for anyone out there who thinks that crat

Shoreditch is an area famous for markets, Brick Lane and curry houses. The pubs like the Shoreditch Tavern where we met are geared up for the night-time drinking at any time. They do this by making the interiors very dark and lighting candles and it really works. We were holed up there before taking the short walk to a record store - Rough Trade - as part of Independent Record Store Day. The shop is just off of Brick Lane by the old Truman's Brewery and was pretty busy when we arrived. A DJ set was playing with members of an ex techno kraut rock band called Can. We were waiting for the man from Essex to show up with his guitar and a few minutes later, there was the click of a telecaster styled guitar being plugged for action. Then we were all asked to move forward a bit which meant we were

"Things I Love" Thursdays - Random Acts of New Yorker Kindness
My best friend sent me a text message today from 42nd and Eighth:"Just witnessed a heart warming NY moment-this high society looking old white lady just tripped over the curb and this gritty, obviously manual labor type young black dude was the first to rush to her rescue. Looked like he was making sure she was ok for a while too. Good stuff."It reminded me of this and made me proud to be living among the best people in the world."Things I Love" Thursdays are inspired by "I Love New York" (BNY, February 14, 2007).

Yesterday, we forgot to put the garbage out.As I was about to jump in the shower, I heard the garbage truck rumbling by. I let out a gutteral cry of frustration as I knew I would never make it to the alley in time.It is a problem to let it sit because if the trash is out there too long, alleycats & homeless folk get into it.Yesterday afternoon, I was out in the yard since the snow was melting & I was thinking about what needed to be done for the spring.  And I noticed the trash was gone. The garbage can was empty!  The garbage guys had come through the gate, emptied the garbage can & replaced it.How nice is that?!

      Fruit of Spirit Kindness
The Lord has been dealing with me a lot lately concerning my dependence upon Him. This dependence must be in every area of my life. When I started blogging a year ago I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I have been hurt, discouraged and forced to look more deeply at who I am. Though most painful, this has stretched me and caused me to grow. But I have also made many friends along the way. They have encouraged me, spurred me on and challenged me which has also caused me to grow. The Lord is actively at work in my life and I have a peace that passes all understanding. I have been allowed to be a blessing to others and the Lord continues to open new doors of ministry for me in the blogging world. This adds a great responsibility I did not anticipate and is one I constantly feel ill-e

These small deeds, delivered with love and compassion, can make an amazing difference. Kindness in words creates confidence
Two things happened today that MADE my day! Lifted my spirits. Filled me up! Replenished me, even, in an energizing sort of way. 1. One of my students called me into the hall. She said she needed to talk. When we made our way outside the classroom, she began, "Ms. S, you are like a peanut butter, chocolate chip pancake breakfast. You know with all the sides: jellies and whip cream and nuts, the whole sha-bang. You're interesting and fun, and with you, there are lots of choices. Well, Ms. S, that student teacher in there RIGHT NOW, she's like plain toast for breakfast, and we don't want to eat toast! You get my drift?" "B., I think that's the NICEST thing anyone has ever said to me!" (BTW, are there such things as peanut butter pancakes? Because I could be all over that!

      Acts of Kindness
Leo Babauto, author of Zen Habits wrote a post about acts of kindness (with the goal of bringing people closer together). This is a concept I truly believe in. What prompted him to write was that when he went to the DMV (in Guam where he lives), a woman who works there was particularly helpful and he was so grateful. And yet, when he was talking with his sister Katrina, she said she felt that most people aren't as kind as they used to be. She's noticed that people say "thank you" less often, and don't smile at strangers. They spend less time walking and talking with each other and more time in their cars where they often act rudely. They watch more TV and spend more time on their computers and less time outdoors interacting with others. Leo mentioned that when he thinks of ways for people to establish community and help each other, the image that comes to mind is Amish barn raisings. He is hoping that by offering to do kind things for others (he gave away 50 eBooks to the first 50 p

Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness
Dan Snaith's Manitoba project is back with a new name but his hypnotic music hasn't changed. Caribou, like Manitoba, is still heavy on electronic jam sessions, with peculiar swirls of sound and stoned instrumental wanderings leading you who-knows-where. The Milk of Human Kindness also has that faint whisp of ‘60s bubblegum pop (see "Bees") and Stereolab-like drone present on Manitoba records like Up In Flames. Such reference points provide welcome toeholds in the midst of all the laptop anarchy, preventing the whole thing from drifting off into the ether. Snaith puts a few other twists on Milk, with mixed success. On the plus side, the sharp opener "Yeti" is a quick burst of fun, while "Lord Leopard" knocks up the beat a notch toward hip-hop territory. The lamentable "A Final Warning," however, falls off the deep end into an almost comedic dead-end. Still, Snaith continues to show off boundless creativity, and when he conjures the right mix of chaos and cohesion like he does on "Br

      Small Acts of Kindness
I just found out that one of my old bosses had a heart attack and passed away on Thursday. I’m incredibly sad. I’ll admit that there are many bosses I have had throughout my life who I would give a quick, “that’s sad” and might send flowers, but this boss was different. I met Terry and his wife when I was a senior in high school. They ran a local ice cream and burger joint. It was an old fashioned train caboose made into a take out restaurant. It had a lot of character and was a local favorite. His wife managed the books and scheduling and Terry was more of the front office guy. He was in the caboose all day with us kids scooping ice cream and working the grill. On rainy days, he taught me how to play cribbage. We had some fiercely competitive games that summer. Terry was there to witness an ex-boyfriend avoid my window at all costs. This particular creep dumped me for my older sister a couple of years before. After putting up with this for a number of or

Act of Kindness, and More About My Parents
Yesterday at about 2:50 PM I got a call from N "Mom, Tatay needs to talk to you..." I sensed "panic" in my father's voice when he said "Hello..."He said Nanay (my mom) is having a severe chest pain that she couldn't walk back to the house. (They were at school picking up G and N when the chest pain occurred). He asked i it's ok to leave the kids at home by themselves so he can go back to my mom to bring her med (Isodril). I told him that's perfectly fine. He asked if I can come home and pick them up from the school because she might not be able to walk back. I told them I would. When I arrived at school, Stacy told me she already drove them home. Now, let me tell you about Stacy. Stacy is the head of A+ (YMCA after school program) at the school where my kids go to. Unlike me who use "smiles" and "soft voice" as a way to "please" people and be nice, Stacy does not smile a lot, and her voice is stern (not the softly sweet kind). But I tell you what - Stacy is one of the kindest pe

      Thank you for your kindness
I am writing to thank you for my 1999 Hyundai Elantra. Due to health problems and constant doctor appointments I am very grateful that I can make these appointments on time. I just received custody of my two grandchildren, this vehicle will get them to school and after school activities. I will forever be grateful for 1-800 Charity Cars.

      An Act of Kindness…Online
Here’s another dream I had involving the World of Warcraft. It involved a good Samaritan and an item that is impossible to get–unless I got the item myself. I was asked for an invite for a group activity to an area of the game I haven’t been to before. I had to turn down the offer [...]

      Kindness
Andrea, Lady Laura, Lisa, Grafted Branch. You are so kind. You yourselves, and so many others, reflect Christ to me here in this realm. Thank you! For Miriam - who reflects Christ through her emotion, and the honesty with which she portrays it.For Beka - who reflects Christ through her faith, and the courageous manner in which she walks through trials. For Jenny - who reflects Christ through her vulnerability, and the striving to be Christ-like.For Bethany, my sister - who reflects Christ through her servant's heart, and the sweet spirit in which she does so.For Sarah - who reflects Christ through her striving to be an excellent wife and mama who reflects Christ.(Much as I would love for you to stay, I hope that you go straightaway to visit these dear ladies - and be blessed!)

The Milk of Human Kindness also has that faint whisp of ‘60s bubblegum pop (see "Bees") and Stereolab-like drone present on Manitoba records like >Up In Flames. Still, Snaith continues to show off boundless creativity, and when he conjures the right mix of chaos and cohesion like he does on "B

      The Kindness of Home Exchangers
'I have come to appreciate that the process of home exchange is more than just about exchanging your home and how tidy you find it on your return. When you exchange homes you often experience a kindness and level of trust that so often feels in short supply in today's busy world. When else would you freely hand over the keys to your home, invite people you may never meet to sleep in your bed and use your car? As a family, we have stayed in many different types of homes and neighbourhoods and had experiences we would never have had if we not been on a home exchange. My children still talk about the open air cinema in Switzerland (the tickets were left as a gift), the ice cream they received from the kindly neighbour during the heatwave in France, the children who came to call when we stayed in Ireland, the invite we received from our exchange partners' friends in Canada to use their pool, the neighbours who called with fish from their fishing trip, etc. Since exchanging my home I

      The milk of human kindness...
Flicking through tonight's copy of thelondonpaper I came across this lovely letter from Gail in Surrey talking about the fabulous Beth Ditto's proposition to TopShop to design clothes for a bigger size than 16: "While it might be normal in the USA to be as wide as you are tall, in the UK the average size is a 16. If average is normal, then Topshop already caters for normal women... perhaps someone might like to persuade her to waddle over to Evans, a shop for women with "bigger bodies"." Gail from Surrey. What. A. Cunt. A sad woman with serious issues about weight, size and probably herself. Go get the latest copy of heat, love. There's some pictures of Vanessa Feltz and some crappy cover line about "fat celebs" to make you feel better about yourself.Strewth!"Gail! I think you dropped these 2 fingers?"

The Kindness of Strangers : Katrina Kittle
Another great book to put on your "must read" list. This one was sent to me by my friend Pat and I think took me longer than usual to read do to the dark subject matter. Some things just turn my stomach. If you are either a foster or adoptive parent then it's a definite "must read" book for you. I could never quite understand why children keep secrets like this or even why and how perps can kidnap teens and they don't run or tell someone but I promise by the end of the book you'll understand too. From the book : On a quiet street in the suburban Midwest, a popular, seemingly stable family keeps a terrible, dark secret behind closed doors - a secret that will have life-changing consequences for all who know them.

      Daily Quote… On Kindness
I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to my fellow-creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. – Stephen GrelletShare This

Phone Photo Op - Random Act of Kindness
The highlight of my afternoon walk was an unexpected encounter. In Harlem, often considered one of the (stereotypically) harder neighborhoods in the city, I came across an elderly Asian man (pictured below in the grey jacket and red cap), who appeared to have spilled a large bag of coins - some 400-500 pennies - in the middle of a crosswalk. He had a cane and was painfully trying to bend and pick up his pennies each time the light was red.A young Black man had stopped to assist the older Asian man in scooping up his coins. I decided to help them, and when the light changed, we all scooted over to the sidewalk. The light turned red again, and this time a young woman also stopped to help us gather pennies in the road. The light changed and we all returned to the sidewalk. When the crossing light permitted pedestrians to walk again, a man in mid-stride looked down upon us as we squatted over the coins and said, "You guys are trying to pick up all of these pennies?"Then he, too, crouched in t

      Kindness to Courtesans
The topic of today’s post is writing to the English Courtesan. Although she gets some lovely emails from readers, she has had a few vile emails of late. If this doesn’t stop and those in question can’t learn to play nicely, she’s going to take down the ‘Email Olivia’ link and make the blog invitation only.So here are the ground rules if you want to play with Olivia:1) I answer emails and reply to comments because it’s courteous to do so. That means I expect to be shown a little courtesy in return. Name-calling and/or tantrums are not courteous.2) When I reply to you, I don’t necessarily expect a response. I fully accept that people have work and family related reasons why they may not respond instantly or indeed ever. It’s up to you whether you email back, and in the same way it’s up to me whether and when I email. It often takes me a week to reply because of the sheer volume of emails I get. If I haven’t responded within 24 hours, don’t start ranting at me.3) W

The Power of Kindness (Piero Ferrucci)
reviews by Joy, your friend Paul Darwynn's colleague Powerful book. It touches on a reality that is often taken for granted, but also much sought after: KINDNESS. Ferrucci enters deeply in the meaning and components of kindness; and he describes what happens to the person who gives and receives kindness. This book reminds us of the essentials in life. Let me quote an insight that poses each of us with a deep challenge: "We too often leave our souls behind. Caught up in an urgency, we forget what is truly important in life. Pushed on by the demon of haste, we forget our souls -- our dreams, our warmth, our wonder." Read this book and reflect. Who knows it might re-enkindle your ideals..... For more information on this book, check out Ferrucci's site:
