The first day of kindergarten remains an exciting and possibly scary rite of passage for kids and a poignant milestone for parents. To help you approach that day with confidence, here are some of the best tips on starting school that Parents' Press has collected over the years from Bay Area educators, child development experts, and parents.Entering kindergarten is a big step, and children know it.
Information provided by the U.S. Dept of EducationTeachers were asked to complete a survey ranking the most important qualities a child needs to possess to make entry into Kindergarten a success. The top three qualities public school kindergarten teachers consider essential for school readiness are that a child be: 1) physically healthy, rested and well-nourished; 2) be able to communicate needs, w

The media seems to have pretty low expectations for McCain. An AP story yesterday noted that McCain "is making promises that would cost billions of taxpayer dollars, yet he is vague about how he would pay for them." Sounds like someone may be holding McCain accountable…but not so fast, AP is quick to let McCain off the hook because "[u]nlike the Democrats, McCain has made a career of trying to cut spending."
So now it's good enough for a politician to simply "try"–success is not required? If Obama or Clinton want to end the war in Iraq, the key question, I guess is whether they will "try" to do so, not whether they actually get the job done.
The McCain plan is the same tried and failed approach Republicans have used for 30 years to wreak fiscal disaster: like Reagan and

What a pig sty! I actually cleaned it up a little for the photoI've been working on setting up my new Toshiba laptop (Yay!). What a nightmare − not the computer, but the process (Boo!). It has been six long years since I've done this and it not only feels like I am starting back over again learning about computers but I'm also learning how to type again. Seriously, though I put myself through the first few years of school by typing, I think I'm going to have to pull out Mavis Teaches Typing − the keyboard feels that different.I haven't had wireless before and it seems to be having a problem downloading all those big updates. Great acting comes from great genius. And our Governor has just demonstrated to us, at least in regards to housing policy, that he is striving for an Oscar in public policy. This week he announced that he had worked out a magical plan with four lenders to bailout subprime lenders, I mean borrowers from impending mortgage resets her in California:
“In an unprecedented move designed to save thousands of California homeowners from foreclosure, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a deal Tuesday with four mortgage lenders to freeze adjustable interest rates for some of the state’s highest-risk borrowers.
The state’s agreement with Countrywide Financial Corp., GMAC Mortgage, Litton Loan Servicing and HomeEq Servicing covers more than 25 percent of California’s subprime mortgage loans, which generally involve homebuyers with weak credit and require periodic increases in payments after initial low-teaser rates.”
First, we need to clarify that this doesn’t begin to co

How old are the youngest children that attend Rockbrook? That question does come up now and then, and at times the answer is surprising. If a girl has completed kindergraten, she can come to camp, assuming of course both she and her parents are ready camp. An outgoing and social personality, an excitement for trying new activities, a growing sense of independence and self-conifidence are all helpful qualities. And with encouragment from their parents, there are always a few kindergarteners in our camp sessions. This is why the youngest campers, who we call “juniors,” can be six or even five years old. Rockbrook has a long tradition of camp activities and programs specially suited for children this young.

Yesterday was the first half-day for Princess at her kindergarten. I mentioned before that we were struggling with the half or full day option. She’s so ready to be at school full-days, but we were unhappy about the lack of curriculum in the afternoons. We decided to give her a little of each and dropped her down to half days on Mondays and Fridays. Tuition was reduced $475, score! My morning went a little smoother. I was able to get the kids ready without having to pack her a lunch. It saved me about 10 precious minutes. We actually got our “good morning” call into THE Daddy before getting into the car. I hate having to pass off my cell phone and translate “BamBam Speak” via speaker phone while trying to drive. I was a little worried that Princess would be upset when she had to leave, but it was quite the opposite. I’m not sure who was more excited when 11:45 rolled around! I was able to get in 3 hours of work while she was there for the morning. Kn
In Australia, kids as young as seven can attend pole-dancing lessons, supposedly some twisted kind of exercise/play thing that teaches teens and pre-teens flexibility and strengthening.
I don’t know about some of the parents of kids who have attended these classes who say that
“It’s not slutty or anything. I’ve seen pole dancing on TV and they don’t do anything like that here. It’s building up her strength after she got ill and it doesn’t put too much pressure on her muscles. She’s much stronger, healthier and more confident,” she added.
Yeah, right!
Although pole dancing is now considered a form of exercise, but the suggestiveness and sensuality attached to this art form isn’t exactly appropriate for young children.
What will they think of next?
Dirty dancing before nap time in kindergarten?

Princess started kindergarten a few weeks ago. Our public school has full-day, half-day AM and half-day PM. Sounds great, right? Not so much. They apparently do not have enough full-day spots for all the families who prefer full-day. Therefore, they do a “lottery” for their full-day spots. Unfortunately, we did not win the lottery and they only gave her a half-day in the morning from 8:30-11. Do the math, that’s only 2.5 hours. Once you throw in snack and recess, not a heck of a lot left for “school”. That might be fine when BamBam starts school. Princess has always been advanced for her age. She already is trying to read. She really needs a full-day curriculum to keep her interested. SO, we decided to send her to a private, Catholic school. Their enrollment numbers have been down in recent years and they saw what was happening in town with kindergarten, so they jumped on the bandwagon and offered a full-day program. TEXAS - Several Mendacity Springs ISD kindergarten classes were sent into extreme hysterics yesterday when a mathematical error took the life of orphaned baby panda, Snuggles Smiles-A-Lot. Zoo officials are still investigating the mishap that happened early yesterday afternoon, saying only that there was some question if the zoo had six or seven Barbary Lions in captivity.

After a long interaction with the kindergarten students, the docile Snuggles Smiles-A-Lot was put into a large wooded and water environment, usually reserved for the Barbary Lion den. While the kindergarten classes looked on and Snuggles Smiles-A-Lot got familiar with his new environment, a testosterone-crazed, hidden and hungry Barbary Lion by the name of Drak
Today was the big day. Moms, Dads, grandparents, and picture taking family members accompanied their kindergarten kids into their first day of school. My oldest son Ryan was a part of the experience, and I'm not sure I know how to feel. I'm excited that Ryan gets to be somewhere so fantastic and where he can learn new things everyday; but I'm a little freaked out that my baby is in school! My one searing memory of being in kindergarten is being a little scared that everyone had to bring their own box of tissue to school. Like what kind of place was this that everyone cried so much you had to bring your own box of tissue?!? For my amusement and yours, I include Robert Fulgham's great piece, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

Anxiety. That’s the word that described how I was feeling this morning.
For the last 2 weeks, I’ve been preparing you for your big adventure - the first day of Kindergarten. We talked about the teachers, friends, and first crush you left behind in preschool. We talked about the big school you’ll be attending, the uniforms they wear, and the new friends you’ll make. We talked about the daily homework you’ll bring home that Mommy hopes she remembers how to do. We talked about growing up.
And grown up you sure are. I still remember those toddler years when you suffered from severe separation anxiety. You were constantly glued to my right leg and would throw a fit everytime I went to the restroom. We couldn’t even leave you at Grandma’s house! Even with her hearing aid, you gave her a headache from your constant crying. This led me to decide to go back to work only part-time, a decision I&rsq

That’s right! The beginning of a new school year is right around the corner. Chances are if you are sending your little one off to kindergarten then you probably aren’t feeling ready. Wes still has an entire year and I get butterflies just thinking about it.
It’s normal to have anxiety about the unknowns ahead, but there are certain things you can do to prepare your child for their first year in school. According to Scholastic.com children should have:
Enthusiasm Toward Learning
The Ability to Listen
The Desire to Be Independent
The Ability to Play Well with Others
Strong Fine-Motor Skills
Basic Letter and Number Recognition
To find out how to encourage these behaviors visit Scholastic.com.
In my experience as a teacher, when parents maintain involvement in their children’s education, they are successful no matter how well they are prepared. If you do nothing else this year, make it a point to stay involved in your child’s life; at home, in school and in the community.

Yesterday afternoon I finally got Maya on the phone about her sneak peek at Abbotts Hill.
Daddy: Maya, how did it go, did you meet your teacher?
Maya: Daddy, they had candy in the room!
Daddy: What's your teacher's name?
Maya: I don't know. I also signed up for Girl Scouts! They eat brownies! (that's just too damn cute! She has a picture in her head of being a brownie, and eating alot of chocolate-y goodness....)
Daddy: Maya, do you even remember your teacher's name?
Maya: No, but she was at the school with the candy.
Maybe it is just me, but I think she's going to find that it is a bit different, both school & Girl Scouts, when things get started on Monday.
But I like the enthusiasm.

New Mexico's pre-kindergarten program has helped children improve their early learning in language, math and the development of literacy skills, according to a study of the first year of the educational initiative.Gov. Bill Richardson released the study on Thursday and urged next year's Legislature to continue expanding the program to make preschool services available to all 4-year-olds in New Mexico. The state started the pre-kindergarten program in the 2005-2006 school year with $5 million and it covered about 1,500 students. About 2,200 children were served in the most recent school year, 2006-2007."Our findings are promising, and indicate that New Mexico's state-funded pre-kindergarten initiative is producing the kinds of initial effects likely to lead to increased school success and continued advantages in reading and math skills," the study concluded."Meaningful effects were found on children's receptive vocabulary, math, and print awareness skills, with the largest effects ap

While summer may be a time to enjoy some relaxation and change of routine, it is also often a time of transition. For young children and their parents, caregivers and teachers, transitions are sometimes stressful and confusing. Children may need to adjust to a summer program or new child care situation, or get ready to move into a new school or to start kindergarten. Seasoned early childhood professionals know that when children learn how to prepare themselves for transitions – like how to say good-bye to a caregiver in the morning as well as how to move from choice time to circle time – they are learning more than time-management skills. They are learning how to manage their emotions, set priorities and anticipate what will happen next. These are the same skills that will help children prepare for all kinds of transitions, including the big step of transitioning to kindergarten. This from Get Ready to Read.org.
According to the apple-or-coin test, used in the Middle Ages, children should start school when they are mature enough for the delayed gratification and abstract reasoning involved in choosing money over fruit. In 15th- and 16th-century Germany, parents were told to send their children to school when the children started to act “rational.” And in contemporary America, children are deemed eligible to enter kindergarten according to an arbitrary date on the calendar known as the birthday cutoff — that is, when the state, or in some instances the school district, determines they are old enough. The birthday cutoffs span six months, from Indiana, where a child must turn 5 by July 1 of the year he enters kindergarten, to Connecticut, where he must turn 5 by Jan. 1 of his kindergarten year. Children can start school a year late, but in general they cannot start a year early. As a result, when the 22 kindergartners entered Jane Andersen’s class at the Glen Arden Elementary School near
Making quality preschool available to more Kentucky children was the focus of a recent meeting of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence. The statewide citizens advocacy group has launched the Strong Start Kentucky campaign, working in partnership with the national organization Pre-K Now to expand and enhance pre-kindergarten throughout the state. Pre-K Now is a public education and advocacy organization, supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts, that emphasizes making high-quality, voluntary pre-k available in a variety of settings. Kentucky performs relatively well on national quality checklists for pre-k, she said, adding that it is important to help communities, civic groups and other organizations understand the importance and benefits of quality pre-k programs. Those benefits include higher graduation rates, reduced crime rates, greater earnings and higher student achievement for people who participate in quality programs. Still, Kentuckyâ€
Child prodigies are rare in any artistic pursuit, but new music composition software is making it easier for parents and teachers to raise a little Beethoven.Sibelius, a well-known maker of software that's used by musicians as well as composers on Hollywood films like Casino Royale, last week released the latest in a line of music software designed for children ages five to 11. With a game-like design and graphics, the software teaches children the basics of instruments, music theory, notation and composition, and then lets them create their own songs by dragging and dropping musically infused shapes, instruments, characters or animations. It's so easy that a kindergartner can compose a song, say educators, and that's something they believe will go far to make music aficionados of kids. That shift could have ripple effects on an already transformed music industry thanks to the digital age. Instead of downloading pirated music, more kids may begin to create their own sounds, educators
When my son started kindergarten many years ago, The only thing he needed to be concerned about was learning the alphabet, numbers, and other things. This is the experience most children in the United States and across the world face when they enter kindergarten.
But the situation is vastly different in Sderot, Israel. Sderot faces a daily barrage of Kassam rockets. It affects every level of life in that small Israeli town. Kindergarteners are not safe. In addition to learning what most children learn, they have to learn what the Red Dawn alert means. Instead of playing peacefully or drawing pictures or reciting the alphabet, these children have to also learn how to escape to a bomb shelter when a Kassam attack is imminent.
By clicking on this link to Sderot Media, you can get a glimpse of what it must be like for these children.
It is Palestinian murderers who target the town of Sderot. Trying to cloak what they are in terms of words like militant, resistance fighter, extremi

In four short months my little Malachi will be going to kindergarten. KINDERGARTEN.Malachi in Kindergarten. I chuckle at the thought. Not because he isn't doing wonderfulin preschool... it's just that he's ACTIVE. And TALKATIVE. And did I mention ACTIVE?Going to school EVERY. SINGLE. DAY seems like a lot for an active boy.Malachi is very advanced spiritually, creatively and actively, and he keeps upwith his fellow preschoolers academically, but barely. For one he is ambidextrous (uses both hands to write) mostly he useshis left hand though…(I think it’s possible he tries to use his right handat school because it’s hard to use scissors and etc. made for the righthand in your left hand)I recently read a study on left handed males that said they are morecreative than right-handed people. There is a definite correlation betweenleft-handedness and creativity/intelligence. Left-handers' brains arestructured differently in a way that widens their range of abilities, andthe
The issue is - how to generate broad support for adequate resources to meet high standards for all students? This is a good approach. The Billings Gazette (Montana) reports:A coalition of labor and education groups is taking its campaign for all-day kindergarten to the state's airwaves.A radio ad touting the benefits of the voluntary statewide program began airing Monday and will continue "until we get full-day kindergarten funded," said Sanna Porte of the Stand Up For Education Coalition. "If we have to (run the ad) until the end of the session, then that's what we'll do," she said Wednesday. The 60-second ad, airing statewide, features Helena parent Christy Hughes and comes as House Republicans stripped all-day kindergarten from the governor's school funding bill earlier this week.

If you thought Diddy's vaginal dryness problem was the funniest thing you've heard in a while, then check out this story. In a country dominated by stupid politicians and moronic people, that was certainly missing. Well, not anymore. Now we're going to have five year old kids talking about marijuana and bangin' dem hoes. A perfect addition to an already fucked up country. And I thought kindergarten is where you learn the alphabets and numbers...I'm jealous of the little bastards now. I didn't get to see pictures of boobies and pussy when I was five. Heck, forget five, even when I was 13 - 14. I asked my dad about sex. I asked, "Pop, where do babies come from?" and he slapped me slightly, "Aye! Why do you wanna know?" and I go, "'Cause I'm 18!". We won't be having that kind of a conversation in Indian households anymore. Perhaps the kids can teach their parents stuff they didn't know! That would be a first. Kids teaching parents about sex. Hey, atleast we're one up on the rest
When I was in Kindergarten, I was the only asian kid in my class. So, my teacher assumed I couldn't speak in English, although I was born in San Diego and spoke perfect English, thank you very much. They put me in the ESL (English as a Second Language) program.I have memories of totally rockin' that sh*t. I was a cocky little 5 year old.My teacher would be like, "Ok, what does C-A-T spell?""That's cat, bitch. NEXT.""Ok, how about M-O-L-E-C-U-L-E?"After yawning, I returned with, "You bore me. A 'molecule' is an aggregate of two or more atoms in a definite arrangement held together by chemical bonds, DUH . . . Look, if you're not going to take this seriously, I'm leaving. Sesame Street is on."
