The Ministry has authorized the Documentation Center of Cambodia to train 1,000 [...]

      Magic moments in Khmer heritage
Date 2 Apr 2008 - 4 Apr 2008 Place Prasat Phanom Rung,  Burirum ProvinceA splash of sunlight penetrating an ancient temple cloister signals a distinctive celebration at Prasat Phanom Rung. Knowing the exact moment to witness a spectacular sunrise through the doorway of an ancient Hindu temple requires a detailed calculation. The most auspicious day is 3 April; the time, 0602.32 at sunrise, as the amber sun is perfectly aligned in the centre of the main doorway to a temple standing on a former volcanic mountain in northeast Thailand. Actually, the sun rays pass straight through 15  perfectly aligned doorways of Prasat Phanom Rung, a revered and ancient Hindu monastery, just four times a year -– two  sets of sunrises, in April and September, and two sets

      Khmer AdSense Expert Blogs
Why do i choose the title of this post as "khmer adsense expert blogs"? Well, first thing that flow in my point of view is because i have seen it a lot over the cyberspace with khmer blogs guys that they embedded the adsense code to their blog as well as websites. That is very interesting to learn about and i also discovered that some khmer bloggers make real money out of this adsense program because they have real unique visitors to their blogs everyday. That's good new for blog publishers that google adsense offered a free of charge membership to join with their program. But publishers have to be a ware of the adsense policy once they have a blog or website to submit it to join the adsense system. It is very obvious that i saw in the this year that many khmer adsense bloggers publish their blog with adsense and some other affiliate program for money making purposes. It is cool to run this kind of stuff where it does not disturb readers anyway. At first i don't believe that people can e

Links 11/20: Pakistan Release, Khmer Tribual, EU Farm Subsidies, Desertion, Tancredo on English, Bilal Hussein
Pakistan has released nearly 3,500 of the people detained since emergency rule was introduced, though another 2,000 remain jailed. A historic UN-backed tribunal is underway in Phnom Phen, Cambodia, where the first of several surviving leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime is facing charges for crimes against humanity. The EU is cutting farm subsidies — one of many reforms of the Union’s increasingly unpopular, but original “pillars,” the Common Agricultural Policy. “But when the Bush administration came to power and the ‘war on terror’ began, he quickly came to realize that the scale of fraud spawned in its wake was of a different order of magnitude. More and more would-be plaintiffs began to contact his firm after hearing about it on the informal whistle-blowers’ grapevine.” For a more encouraging morning coffee — a fascinating Vanity Fair piece on employees of US government contractors in Iraq who are outraged at the fraud they

Disputed Khmer temple to be renovated by Archaeological Survey of India
19 November 2007 (Earthtimes.org, Bangkok Post) - Preah Vihear, a hotly contested khmer temple that straddles between the Thai and Cambodian borders is to be renovated by a neutral party - the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple sits on a high cliff and rests on Cambodian soil; however, entrance into the temple is via the Thai side of the border. I’m not sure how this move resolves any diplomatic tensions over the site, however. The other interesting aspect of the two stories is the involvement of the Archaeological Survey of India, which has been active in restoring many Hindu temples throughout Southeast Asia. Notably, it had helped restore the Prambanan temples in Indonesia after it as damaged during last year’s earthquake as well as the Ta Prohm, another Angkoran temple. The leaf-books of Khmer monks
23 September 2007 (Vietnam News, courtesy of chlim01) - The art of inscribing text on leaves used by monks in Cambodia is in danger of being lost as the sole monk with the skill takes a two-year break without finding any successor. The Cambodian version of the art is not old - only about 100 years old - but similar ancient traditions are found elsewhere in the region, for instance by the Cham in South Vietnam (see related story at the end of the post). I wonder if there’s a regional tradition of writing texts on leaves. Further south in Bali and Java there are copies of king-lists written on palm leaves. It occurs to me that the Malay word “buku” is a corruption of the English word “book”, but ancient texts surely existed before European contact. Today, virtually all textual sources of ancient Southeast Asia is based on carved inscriptions on stone. However, I would not be surprised if this region had a rich textual culture based on leaf-books such as the

Khmer Rouge leader charged with war crimes
Justice is finally catching up with some of these people: An ex-Khmer Rouge prison chief has been charged with crimes against humanity by a UN-backed tribunal in Cambodia. Kang Kek Ieu, also known as Duch, was in charge of the notorious S21 jail in the country's capital, Phnom Penh. Duch is the first of five suspects whom prosecutors have asked the tribunal to investigate over their role in the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. ... Duch was not among the top level of Khmer Rouge leaders but he has become one of its most notorious members, according to the BBC's Guy De Launey in Phnom Penh. He ran S21, a notorious jail where a total of more than 17,000 men, women and children were thought to have been imprisoned, many of them brutally tortured. A museum at the site illustrates in graphic detail what happened to the inmates, many of whom were executed at the so-called Killing Fields outside Phnom Penh. Duch was also the Khmer Rouge cadre who took charge of French anthropologist Francois Bizo

Khmer Nationalism bows down to Thai??
As my friends and I were taking beer in a street café last night, a promotion girl came and asked us to buy her product(555 cigarette). The girl looked so beautiful and hot. Being endowed with good looking, my friends could soften a girl's heart from his smiles and sweet voice. Moreover, as a foreign scholars, they outpoint other men in the love affairs. In the conversations, a question came out "what is your nationality?". "we are Thais", I was really shocked with my friends' answer. Oh my Buddha! Why Thai, not Cambodian? I stayed calm, though. However, some questions aroused in my head as why we needed to answer like that? Is it ashamed to say we are Cambodian? Additionally, we were sitting in a high-class café, but why we had to honer the Thai instead?read more

Cambodia to seek World Heritage status for Khmer temple
11 June 2007 (Bangkok Post) - The Preah Vihear temple which straddles the border between Thailand and Cambodia is the next site that the government of Cambodia hopes to be listed as a World Heritage site. The temple was built by Kings Suryavarman I and II between the 11th and 12th centuries. Ownership of the site was disputed between Thailand and Cambodia, and the International Court of Justice awarded the latter custody of the site. However, the temple is more easily accessible from the Thai side of the border. Cambodia asks UN status for border temple he Cambodian government has renewed efforts to have Unesco classify the ancient Preah Vihear temple (Khao Phra Viharn in Thai) as a World Heritage site, government spokesman Khieu Kanharith confirmed Monday. Khmer art exhibition in Berlin
07 June 2007 (The Economist) - The Economist reviews the Angkor: Sacred Heritage of Cambodia exhibition in Berlin and also touches on looted Cambodian antiquities. The looting of Cambodia’s cultural heritage has been touched on many times in this site; you might want to look up our podcast featuring Heritage Watch, as well as the more recent news of Angkor Wat artefacts put up for sale on eBay. Gods on display … There are two stories that unfold in the cool lofty rooms of Berlin’s 19th-century Martin-Gropius-Bau museum—a far cry from the sweaty heat of the National Museum of Phnom Penh, which has lent many of the exhibits. First, are the splendid sculptures dominated by a procession of the Hindu deities, Vishnu and Shiva, plus Harihara, who represents a mixture of both. One of the most striking is the serene face and upper body of Vishnu in a sleeping pose, an 11th-century fragment of what is believed to have been the largest bronze statue ever cast in Cambodia. T

He told me that his friends could realize right away where the scarf was made in at the first glance. read more
