      Key West - Florida
The pictures ENLARGE if you click on them. Key West monument marking the southernmost point in the continental United States is located in Key West, Florida, at the corner of South Street and Whitehead Street. When Catherine and I left Washington DC, she flew home, but I still had some vacation left so I flew to Fort Lauderdale, rented a car and drove to Key West Florida. These two markers lie next to the above Key West marker. The one on the left says "In honor of the generousity of the people of the United States to the people of Cuba. Dedicated in honor of the thousands of cubans who have lost their lives at sea looking for freedom and social justice in this great melting pot of America ..." The marker on the right says "This monument establishes the southern most point of the united sta

Hong Kong Willie makes first trip to Key West
Finally Hong Kong Willie's Joe and Kim Brown make their first trip to Key West for 2008. This time they have a different twist to their visit. Hong Kong Willie is pushing their Green Shopping Bags and so called Dream catcher pictured above. Usually when going to the Florida Keys, Hong Kong Willie brings Kim Brown's art but not this time probably since they are limited to their GEO Metro Hong Kong Willie Google Car. There certainly not a lot of room for Hong Kong Willie when limited to the only vehicle that is left running for this "Preservation Art Group". Last time I checked the "Dreamcatcher" runs around $25-$30 each and their "Green Shopping Bag" runs about $19 each. That seems expensive to me but maybe in Key West that is the going price for weird items such as these. Hong Kong Willi

      Key West

Viewer Mail - Key West Mollete? It's the Picadillo!
I was curious if being familiar with the keys you might know about a place we got stuffed cuban bread from when I was very young…maybe about 1974-1976? It was filled with some kind of a ground beef mixture that was out of this world, the place was very small and had maybe two booths. I wish I had the name of it. I have looked for recipes, tried to recreate it myself in vain, any pointers? Hi Francie, I've not spent a lot of time in the Keys (Cedar Key is off northwest FL) but I’m pretty sure what you’re remembering is a Key West area favorite locally called a mollete. The word mollete actually means a kind of bread to the Spanish or a sort of pizza in Mexico (an oversimplification to be sure) but in Key West a mollete is a portion of Cuban bread stuffed with picadillo (traditional Cuban spicy ground beef hash) then breaded and deep fried. Relaxation in Key West
Have you ever just wanted to escape everything around you? Do you feels levels of stress increasing and frustration only continuing to develop? If this is the case you may just need a weekend away from most people and a relaxing environment. After a ZBT Alumni Reception in Miami on Friday night, I felt the need to go away. I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. Karina, Erica, and Sa were having the same thoughts. We decided it was time to do something adventurous and go to Key West. In a matter of moments we packed our bags. We weren’t going to be staying in a hotel, we decided to go camping. We brought air mattresses, purchased a tent, and packed a cooler. Sa had found the place online and decided it was a great choice. We wanted something on the water. We got the keys at around 10:30pm. The security guy at the gate was really creepy and asking us weird questions, but we eventually got in. If you have ever set up a tent before you probably have experienced some chall

The Biggest Halloween Costume Party - Fantasy Fest Key West
Every year the Fantasy Fest is one of the biggest Halloween costume party held in Key West during the month of October (Halloween), unless a hurricane does not permit it, in that case the celebrations take place at a later time. The festivities usually last over 1 week. This year the Fantasy Fest will be held Oct. 19 - 28th, 2007. Hotels, Guest Houses and Inn's are usually booked months in advance. The Street Fair features many costume, lingerie, leather and other clothing booths. Halloween costumes sell like hot cakes the closer it gets to the day of the big Halloween Costume Party, which is usually held the weekend before Halloween. Of course many other parties are held during the entire week. The costumes are very sexy, since the temperatures in Key West are tropical at this time of the year, and it's a paradise for big carnival parties. There are so many different Halloween parties to go to, such as Toga parties, A green Parrot costume party is also held annually, fe

Key West attorney knowingly auctions off stolen yacht
Alan Eckstein a criminal defense attorney knowing auctioned off a stolen yacht and the state confirms it. Ecksteins client Ocean Key Resort in Key West hired John Evans to go twenty three miles away to take a yacht they didn’t own or have permission to take. During the taking of the yacht Evans told police on site and a local resident he owned the yacht. Police allowed Evans to take yacht without showing proof of ownership. After getting it back to the marina hotel representatives started dismantling yacht and trashing it. The yacht was at this time listed for sale by the owners and listed with United Yacht Sales in Stuart Florida. The brokerage was notified right aay and agreed it was illegal. Several months later the marina decided to illegally auction off yacht under a state statute they could not legally use. Statute 328.17 clearly does not allow anyone to go take possession of a yacht, it also requires a sale under the statute to be certified. The state would not certify th

      Key West Summary
I am no longer moving east, west, or south. In the next couple months I will only be moving north as I make my way towards Maine. One stop in Key West was for a photo of miler market zero of Highway 1. Now that my first Key West experience is complete I’m still trying to understand that place! In terms of the most interesting people, people watching, character, weirdness, craziness, and anything else I think it’s 2nd to only Venice Beach of where I’ve been on my trip. It’s an eclectic place and I understand why writers head there for inspiration to clear writer’s block (although I hardly did any writing there). It’s an inspirational place with a unique vibe. Overall Key West probably has the most things to do of any town that size that I’ve visited and quite possibly the best restaurants. Here’s a big list of all the great places I was so fortunate to try: Upper Crust (great thin crust pizza) Haagen-Dazs (of course everyone has had this, but you can never have too muc

Weekend Watering Hole: Kelly's Caribbean Bar, Grill and Brewery, Key West, Fla.
As a regular weekend feature, Lyke2Drink will visit some of the world's great watering holes. This week we find ourselves in laid back Key West at the southernmost brewpub in the United States.Kelly's Caribbean Bar, Grill and Brewery301 Whitehead StreetKey West, Fla. 33040(305) 293-7897You can hardly turn a corner in Key West without running into a bar. It's a legendary place where pirates and presidents have hung out. Ernest Hemingway called the island home and it has a counter culture feel with more buildings flying the Conch Republic flag than the Stars and Stripes.Key West is also the home of Kelly's Caribbean Bar, Grill and Brewery, which is owned by actress Kelly McGillis. If you start driving on Route 1 at the Canada-Maine border you will eventually find yourself in Key West. Kelly's is your last chance for a freshly made brew in the United States. I found myself in town recently as the winner of a cruise promotion run by the Harris Teeter grocery store chain.Kelly's is l

Beer Run: A Voyage to Key West, Cozumel and Nassau
Good fortune struck recently when I won a cruise aboard the Regent Navigator for doing nothing more than shopping my local Harris Teeter grocery store. At first I thought it had to be some kind of scam, but it turns out that I was automatically entered for shopping the store and using my Harris Teeter VIC Card to get the weekly discounts.I had been trying to get my wife, Sandy, on a cruise for 24 years, and after the bumpy ride on the ship thanks to some choppy seas, it might be another 24 years. But, that's another story. The folks at Harris Teeter rewarded shoppers from each of its stores, plus employee incentive winners, with a first class 5 night cruise that left from Fort Lauderdale, sailed to Key West, then to Cozumel, Mexico, and onto Nassau, in the Bahamas. Harris Teeter treated the winners extremely well and made sure everyone had a great time.At the stops along the way we made sure to find some local beers to enjoy in the tropical settings. The next Tuesday Tasting will reca
