The type of VoIP implementation most well known to consumers and students uses client-based, peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies such as Napster and Skype (Jones, 2005). P2P systems are far more decentralized than other networking or computer systems, with little or no reliance on the idea of clients being served by a central server. Clients (individual computers or telephony end points) act as nodes and are as likely to be ‘providing’ resources to other nodes (its peers) as to be consuming them from other nodes. It is fairly well known within higher and further education that such client-based P2P applications can cause problems on IP networks because they make it much harder to manage the use of bandwidth and to exercise some level of control over the use of the network. Bueno pues sí, después de noticias, rumores y dimes y diretes, se lanzó oficialmente el proyecto Joost al aire. Lo de los rumores es porque detrás del mismo están nada más y nada menos que Janus Friis y Niklas Zennstrom, los mismos tipos que crearon Kazaa, y luego Skype y lo vendieron en miles de millones de dólares a la gente de Ebay.Pues bien, primero llamado The Venice Project y ahora Joost, consiste en ofrecer televisión por la red de forma gratuita y sin suscripciones ni historias similares. Un peer to peer para la televisión, la cosa promete! Yo por lo pronto me ha apuntado ya a la beta a ver qué tal funciona y para enterarme un poco más, porque en la web la verdad es que no dicen mucho.
