Seeking an "out of the box" settlement to the Kashmir issue with India, Pakistan has said the two countries need to go beyond the confidence-building measures and engage in serious dialogue to address the "real issues.""We have to look out of the box... we have to look at innovative ways of resolution (to the Kashmir issue). We have our minds open to such issues," Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Ma

The sheer magnitude of the avalanche which I was looking at validated my earlier fears. Four days earlier I had been skiing where this behemoth had cut its swath of destruction. It’s proportions were epic. It appeared to me that the northern 1/3 of the Pir Panjal range had slid.

Syed Salahuddin has said in an interview today that Pakistan is providing moral, political, military and diplomatic support in fighting for Kashmir. Though we know that this is what is happening, it has indeed come to light to the whole world that India is facing lot of border issues in Kashmir purely because of Pakistan politics. What are we going to do about it? Thousands of civilians and military police men die in this issue. In the interview the Chief also dares India on Kashmir and confirmed Pakistan's support in all their activities. hmmm...

Yes we agree. We did take a very fuckin' long break in the middle. Anyhoo we are back with something special. This time around, inspired by the movie Darjeeling Limited, one of our correspondents decided to visit India first hand and write his experiences of the place. We are going to be publishing his views on the beautiful country here. TO start of here's the first one: KashmirI was feeling pretty confident leaving Europe from its largest city (Istanbul), in one piece and relatively scam-free, feeling ready for the initial shock of India. And flying over Syria, Iraq, and several other war-torn areas, it made me realize how cozy and secure I've been living all my life, couldn't even fathom what real political turmoil must be like.Fourteen gruelling hours later (and 6 hours stop-over in Q
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Monday advocated the need for creating an "enabling environment" for the success of the Indo-Pak peace process and said the Kashmir issue could be resolved through "sincerity, courage and flexibility".In a message on the eve of the "Kashmir Solidarity Day" to be observed tomorrow across Pakistan, Musharraf said, "We firmly believe that an enabling environment is necessary for the success of the peace process."
It was an amazing experience. The army and police were fully cooperative. But we never needed them Rahul told IANS.Rahul Bose has just finished shooting in the bitter winter of Jammu and Kashmir for Santosh Sivan's second Hindi film "Dastaan" and predicts that the valley is soon going to be a favourite shooting spot for international cinema. My prediction about Kashmir: with the kind of vehicles, hotels, food and tourist infrastructure that it now boasts of, Kashmir, according to me, is going to be the next destination for international cinema - like Morocco became seven years ago."The last time I had been to Kashmir I was four. I had no recollection of the valley. We shot in freezing bleakness. The weather was very Russian. It was like adventures of Narnia coming to life. It was all white with snow and certainly gloomy, but the shapes of the chinar trees covered with snow transports you to another world."It was also reported that I was driving when the car skidded. Not true at all. I
Funny how things come full circle. One of the first albums (yes, kids, actual vinyl) I owned was by a band that reunites tonight for the first time in 27 years in a tribute to late music promoter Ahmet Ertegun.Ertegun, you may know, was co-founder of Atlantic Records (and of the New York Cosmos of the defunct NASL). Could it have been his Turkish roots that gave him such a keen ear to up-and-coming sounds? I mean, he had the insight to pay $2,500 to buy out the contract of a then-unknown musician named Ray Charles. He embraced the rock and roll era, signing Cream, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and an edgy band called Led Zeppelin. One year ago, Ertegun fell at a Rolling Stones concert, and never recovered. His legacy will be on display tonight at the O2 Arena in London, where an astounding lineup -- Lez Zeppelin, Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini -- will pay tribute to him as a benefit for his Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund.A poll of Zeppelin f

Shimla, June 2 (IANS) Pakistan’s Leader of Opposition Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman said here Saturday resolution of the Kashmir issue is central to normalisation of relations between India and Pakistan.
“Solving the Kashmir issue is the first and last essential,” said Rehman, who is the parliamentary leader of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal party (MMAP).
He was speaking at a two-day meeting of lawmakers of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries here.
This is the second such meeting to be orgainsed by South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA). About 80 parliamentarians from all the eight SAARC countries are taking part in the seminar inaugurated Saturday by Lok Sabha speaker Somanath Chatterjee.
On the issue of building a gas pipeline across Iran, Pakistan and India, the Pakistani opposition leader said: “Global powers have no business in interfering and telling us what to do.”
“We need to solve this on our own and not allow Western

New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s “soft policy” towards terrorism after thousands of Kashmiris attended a rally in Srinagar Sunday shouting slogans for pro-Pakistan militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Condemning the rally, which was held to welcome back hardliner separatist Syed Ali Geelani, who underwent cancer treatment in Mumbai, the BJP asked the government to take “immediate action” against the protesters.
“Pro-Pakistani militant action is a result of soft policy adopted by the prime minister and the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government, towards challenge of terrorism. The Kashmir situation is worsening day by day because of this soft policy of the government,” BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekhar said in a statement here.
“Pro-Pakistani slogans is a threat to national security. BJP always stands for policy of zero tolerance for issues concer

Jammu, April 13 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said here Friday that the prime minister’s third round table conference (RTC) on Kashmir would be held in New Delhi on April 24.
Addressing a daylong convention of village elders, commonly known as ‘nambardars’ and ‘chowkidars’ here Friday, Azad said the decision was taken at a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday evening.
Two round table conferences on Kashmir have already been held. However, the main opposition party, the National Conference, stayed away from the working groups framed by the prime minister on Kashmir. The separatists too chose to stay away from the RTCs saying they did not want to be among every “Tom, Dick and Harry” invited for the conference.
The National Conference has since returned to the working groups on the prime minister’s assurance that human rights’ violations would be brought to an end.
The separatists were demandi
Srinagar, April 7 (IANS) The next time sprawling tulip fields catch your imagination in a Bollywood blockbuster, don’t think of Holland. For, Jammu and Kashmir may soon have Asia’s largest tulip garden.
Sirajbagh, a vast expanse of fertile land situated at the foothills of the Zabarwan mountains on the banks of the Dal Lake in summer capital Srinagar, is these days a riot of colour.
Yellow, white, pink, purple, red, blue and crimson tulips impart a majestic look to the valley’s first tulip garden. These beautifully laid tulip fields are a romanticist’s dream come true.
The authorities here are upbeat about Kashmir having Asia’s largest tulip garden soon because they have managed to grow as many as 50 exotic varieties of tulips imported from Holland.
“We engaged consultants from Holland and imported 50 exotic varieties to be grown here and all of them are in bloom these days.
“Finally to be extended to 90 acres, Sirajbagh is soon to be Asia&rsq
Srinagar, Dec .20: Kashmir is reeling under a Cold Wave as temperatures dipped several degrees below normal in the valley.A thick mantle of fog covered the city on Wednesday morning, severely affecting movement of traffic, as visibility was reduced to barely a few meters.Weather officials said the fog is a sequel to western disturbances."The fog phenomenon according to our climatology comes about whenever the western disturbance passes through the hills or plains, following which three four days later, the fog sets in. This is natural because as soon as western disturbance passes through an area, the temperature dips several degrees below normal and frost sets on the ground. So, when the next day sun rises and temperature rises, we get to see shallow fog," said L.C. Rao, Director of the Meteorological Department.
