Juror on Marijuana case takes law into her own hands
49-year-old Cornelia Turner Mayo was fulfilling her civic duty by taking part in jury duty in Houston, Texas. Cornelia was one of the 20 prospective jurors in a marijuana possession trial. During jury selection, a 45-minute break was called. When the 45 minute break was up, Cornelia was the only one to not return to the courtroom. The judge in the case was about to issue a bench warrant when he received a call that Cornelia was arrested right outside the criminal courthouse. Cornelia was arrested for smoking a joint. All that talk about weed probably gave her a major craving. The judge told The Houston Chronicle, "I've had prospective jurors get lost before, but it never occurred to me that they might be getting ready for a marijuana trial by, allegedly, smoking marijuana."The former juror w

      Being a Virtual Juror
Well, I took my own advice from yesterday and checked out both Ejury.com and OnlineVerdict.com. While reading the FAQ sections, I found that ejury says they pay $5-$10 per case and OnlineVerdict.com pays $20-$60 per case.So I'm sure you're thinking the same thing as me - why would anyone ever use ejury? I concluded to sign up for OnlineVerdict and did so. Sign up process is easy. If you're in the legal profession or related to a lawyer by blood/marriage you can't use these websites - sorry. After I signed up, I learned a little more about how the process works. Once you sign up to be a virtual juror, the site will contact you when they have a case for you to review. It's not like they have a bunch of cases sitting there that you can choose from and just spend your off hours working on them. It's a sit and wait kind of game.Since this was the case, now I understand why you would sign up for both services. If you have to sit and wait for cases to spring up, then being a memb

RIAA Case Juror Speaks: 2 Jurors Wanted $3.6M Fine
It turns out that Jammie Thomas could have been worse off The tech news industry has been buzzing with news of the $222,000 verdict in the precedent setting civil case Capitol Records v. Jammie Thomas, the first instance of an RIAA complaint going to a trial by jury. Now a juror from the case has opened up and discussed their feelings about the case and what went on inside the courtroom. While some may feel the $9,250 per song fine levied against Thomas was extreme and unreasonable, she could have been far worse off, if a couple of the jurors had their way.In an interview with THREAT LEVEL on Tuesday, Michael Hegg, one of the jurors from the case, reported that two jurors had tried to sway the other jurors to adopt the maximum fine per violation, $150,000 per piece of copyrighted material. As Thomas was found guilty of 24 such violations, this would have resulted in a $3.6 million fine.Another juror, according to Hegg, was insistent on making the fine as low as possible. One juror said he didn’t want to be judging Libby. “This sucks,” Collins quoted the juror as saying. “The belief of the jury was that he was tasked by the vice president to talk to reporters,” he said. Yet, Collins emphasized, “This wasn’t about the war … This wasn’t a question of who can we punish for going into Iraq.” Source: Law.com - Juror Describes Deliberations That Led to Libby Conviction   Technorati tags: Libby, trial, guilty, juror, description, fall guy Sponsored By: Images by Mike in WNY Unique and Original Buffalo Themed Gifts

      The Juror
There's nothing like Jury Duty to make you appreciate what you thought was a ho-hum life. My day started at 6:15 a.m. At 6:21, I reluctantly slung my legs over the edge of the bed to get ready for the unknown. I've never served on jury duty so all I had to go on was what I saw on television court cases, which, I found out, was quite inaccurate compared to the real world. As I dressed I
