AMID much publicity last year, the National Geographic Society announced that a lost 3rd-century religious text had been found, the Gospel of Judas Iscariot. The shocker: Judas didn’t betray Jesus. Instead, Jesus asked Judas, his most trusted and beloved disciple, to hand him over to be killed. Judas’s reward? Ascent to heaven and exaltation above the other disciples.
It was a great story. Unfortunately, after re-translating the society’s transcription of the Coptic text, I have found that the actual meaning is vastly different. While National Geographic’s translation supported the provocative interpretation of Judas as a hero, a more careful reading makes clear that Judas is not only no hero, he is a demon.

Yesterday, I posted some thoughts about Judas... and I thought I'd continue those thoughts today. I wonder if Judas thought he had it all together? I wonder if he thought he had Jesus and the Gospel all worked out... even before it really "began"?That's scary and risky territory to be in when we operate under the mindset that we have it all together. Normally when we get to that point, Holy Spirit makes sure we get a little shaken up. Jesus is the only one who has it all together... and/or figured out. I'm all for theology, doctrine and study... but even the world's top theologians don't have it all right. I think Judas thought he had it all together... and he was just waiting for his crown, thrown and kingdom to rule in under the reform he thought the Messiah was about to bring.I still can't get over the thought that Judas actually walked with Jesus, yet he was a blind as a bat... I was reading in Luke 22 this morning and it got the wheels turning in my head. How did Judas get to the point of turning Jesus over? Didn't he realize what was going on?It's easy for us to see the whole picture... we have the whole story... and Judas didn't. I know I wrote about this before, but I want to look at it from a different angle.
Now I am not a theologian, far from it. I do however, have a passing interest in lots of things Christian because if forced into a corner, I would concede that a lot of their beliefs and ideals closely match my own.
Onward.....now this Gospel Of Judas is an important document. Whether it is real or not, if it conforms or confirms to anyone else's preordained religious beliefs is irrelevant. From a non Christian (Ok ok, Christian leaning) point of view such as my own, the document is priceless. I can imagine no train of thought, no sane thinking person's rationale that could possibly think otherwise. Other than perhaps a muslim.
Which brings me to the point of this post. The linked Wikipedia article mentions under the heading "Sale And Study"

Notice how Prof. Pagels manages to write 1800 words (by my computer's count) without once mentioning the date of composition of the Gospel of Judas or its chronological place among "authentic early Christian documents," as she puts it. She mentions Mark as the first-written Gospel (an increasingly challengeable bit of conventional wisdom itself) but then lumps everything else together as writings from "the decades after [Jesus'] death."Well, in the case of the Gospel of Judas, that would be at least fifteen decades after Jesus' death -- and longer even than that, according to some scholars, depending on whether you think Pagels' Gospel of Judas is the one Irenaeus wrote about. But then, details of this sort can get pretty complicated. And they don't make it any easier to sell books.

Some Christians thought that God demanded of them to go to the cross (ie. human sacrifice). The community of Judas thought that was a pretty dumb idea. The good news (gospel) of Judas is that people shouldn't listen to those leaders who tell them to go and sacrifice themselves. What kind of God would demand of its people to go and have themselves killed?Now, April DeConick agrees. This sermon was delivered on 3 April 2007, Tuesday of Holy Week, at Lanark, St Nicholas Church. The readings were: John 12: 1-11 & John 13: 18-30.
‘On Iona, in the early days of the Iona Community, it was decided to commission a well-known glassmaker to make six glass communion cups for use in the Abbey. The craftsman was asked to engrave a suitable biblical text onto each of the cups: ‘This is the blood of the new covenant’, ‘This do in remembrance of me’ and so on. Now this craftsman, as it happened, was not a churchman, although he was sympathetic to Christianity. When he received the commission he made one request: could he choose one of the texts to engrave on the cups? His request was granted.
