It is set in a period where people were searching for a sense of identity. I thought the stories were very ironic and realistic. My favorite stories were A Little Cloud, a story of a man who thinks he leads an unsuccessful and unhappy life be

"If we do well in this and I do well it would be brilliant to finish off on a winning note," Joyce said.He added: "That's what I'm hoping. It's been weird because I moved clubs at the end of last season but I've been still hanging

Sodom and Gomorrah. All we faeries talk like that. Only in an Englishmun's dreams do we do.So, I have a problem with my sexuality. Sometimes I'm James, othertimes Joyce. Depends on my mood, I guess. You should've seen me as ayoung man, maybe you would've wanted to paint my portrait.Maybe it's my Irish roots showing through, but when you take Dubliners out of Ireland, transplant them to the U.S., l

Three pages in and I had to give up once again, but if only for now. I'm looking forward to having a child for the sake of this book. It would make a great bedtime story for an infant- oh the wondrous
Here in the Occident, we have, ingrained in our thought, the firewall duality between the carnal and the spiritual, which religion refuses to bridge. Indeed, Christian religions, some more than others, deny the needs of the body, teach us that the flesh and all that pertains to it, is sinful and are deeply suspicious of the natural appetites of the flesh.
When James Joyce wrote Ulysses, he
Today I want to return to the Ireland photos taken the summer of 2007. This is a shot of a farm in the morning while on a car ride in an area known as Joyce's Country. This photo was taken with a Nikon D2x using RAW mode.

Dr Mark Struthers - Keeping it in the FamilyI let the boys do the talking and the matter has ended up in a bar cyberbrawl. I decided to step in with some choice factual evidence about Dr Mark Struthers. As many of you will recall, he annoyed the editors . Both sides deteriorated in a cyberbrawl, the type we would see at medical school. Guys we aren't in the student union now! Please lets not fight
Another of Joyce’s fallen men is Mr. Doran of “The Boarding House”. Forced to marry his landlady’s daughter, Mr. Doran descends down the stairs: “Going down the stairs his glasses become so dimmed with moisture that he had to take them off and polish them. He longed to ascend through the roof and fly away.” Mr. Doran wishes to escape from the pressure he is exposed to, nevertheles
Joyce at the age of twoIf the dominant theme of the paralysis assures wholeness of the book (as noted by so many readers and critics by now), so does structure assures its harmony. In one of his letters Joyce talks about the great care in arranging his stories. The fifteen stories proceed from the individual, only the first tree are told in the first person, to general; from youth to an approximat

The press is finally starting to notice Barack Obama's problem with gun owners. Politico notes that Obama served on the board of directors for the Joyce Foundation, which has given millions of dollars to gun-control groups. In fact, Politico's Kenneth Vogel reports that Obama thought about taking over as head of the Joyce Foundation, but decided to focus on politics instead. The Joyce Foundation gave $21 million to anti-gun groups while the senator served on the board, yet now the head of the Joyce...(read more)
Joyce Cheng wanted to be self sufficient or self reliant or whatever it is called. Ever since the passing away of her mother, Lydia Shum, she has become a target for the media. Currently they found out that Joyce has released from her service the helpers and driver who all have served them for many years and this lead to unfavourable report by the media about her action.Joyce came out and
Here is the opening sentence of “The Dead”; “Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, was literally run off her feet.” The word “literally” in this context is one that uneducated people, such as Lily, a housemaid, would use. The ninetieth century writer would probably used “figuratively” instead of “literally”, nut not Joyce, a modernist. Again, he gives his pen to his characters, to Lily, in this case, and she, in return, inflects the author’s style with her own personality. Even though Dubliners is written in English language, its author’s voice is rather multilingual than monolingual, since his characters speak their own languages. The language defines the very quality of their living. Mr. Power of “Grace” finds himself surprised when he hears the way Mr. Kernan

I feel like I've already mastered all the poses. But personality wise, I'm still the old Joyce you used to know. The shapely bikini goddess with a mean streak as a villainness on TV?Yes, you're right. CHICAGO – Before you’re served this meal, you’re treated to a backstory of four integral ingredients that are three parts encouragement and one part concern. The Piven Theatre, which is co-founded by Joyce Piven (the mother of Chicago film star Jeremy Piven), is kicking off its upcoming theater season by revisiting an acclaimed format that sold out shows throughout its run two years ago.For more delectable buildup, a personal note from director Joyce Piven on this year’s “What Dreams May Come: American Visions Through Jewish Eyes” perfectly puts you in the storytelling mood. The tale of her credulous and selfless grandfather, Jake, is one you’re inspired by and proud to tell about an elder you love and respect. Jake Piven ran a small grocery store off Roosevelt Road where he had a “credit record” of all things purchased to be paid without interest when the person could afford it.For even more fodder to this looming feast, you learn its three stories are penned by one Pu
A silent war was still on with Judy Ann Santos and Director Joyce Bernal after the movie “Don’t Give Up on Us” of Star Cinema.Juday and Piolo were the main cast of this said movie and that time, Juday and Ryan Agoncillo are starting their relationship. It was said that Juday requested Star Cinema to cut the kissing scenes in their movie and ask not to tell about this to the Piolo-Juday fans. This was to protect her growing relationship with Ryan.Star Cinema granted her request, and the fans were able to know about the plan of excluding the kissing scene in the movie. Juday was surprised about this and discovered that it was Director Joyce who spilled the issue about the kissing scene.Until now, Juday and Director Joyce are still having their silent war, Ryan on the other hand doesn’t want to butt-in to the issue. According to him, he’s not part of the issue and he doesn’t want to hurt anybody’s feeling with what he’s to say. He’s letting them manage their own disagreem
Joyce Carol Oates has been one of my favorite authors for more than 20 years so I'm always on the lookout for something new from her, an easy thing for Oates collectors because she rewards us with at least two or three new books every year. I am primarily a fan of her fiction, novels and short stories alike, but I've been impressed with and enjoyed much of her poetry, essays and literary criticism as well. Her energy and accomplishments are amazing. This past Sunday, Oates received an honorary degree from Brandeis University and spoke with Dan Snyder, Arts Editor for the university newspaper, The Justice:Many female authors find themselves pigeonholed as "women writers," especially when their novels and short stories are generally focused on female protagonists and their perspectives. Fortunately, Joyce Carol Oates does not find herself in such a position. Oates' works have garnered much critical praise throughout her prolific, decade-spanning career, saving her from being grouped
“When we claim to 'remember' our pasts, we are surely remembering our favorite snapshots, in which the long-faded past is given a distinct visual immortality.”Joyce Carol Oates (b. 1938) U.S. author
Joyce Carol Oates is one of my favorite authors and, in fact, I've collected over 70 of her books now, most of them in hard cover, several of them signed, and I'm generally reading in and out of one of her short story collections most of the time. So this list of her favorites was especially interesting to me.Crime and Punishment by Fyodor DostoevskyUlysses by James JoyceThe Sound and the Fury by William FaulknerThe poems of Emily DickinsonThe stories of Franz KafkaThe Red and the Black by StendhalThe Rainbow by D.H. LawrenceWomen in Love by D.H. LawrenceMoby Dick by Herman MelvilleThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark TwainOates is noted for her rather dark view of the threatening world that women inhabit and the suddenness with which situations can turn ugly for them, so some of these titles are not surprising. From The Top 10: Writers Pick Their Favorite Books
Joyce Carol Oates has an impressive resume: Princeton University Professor, prolific author, winner of numerous awards including being short listed for the Nobel Prize. I have read a bunch of her stories in the past usually taking an extended break because they tend to be so dark I can get berried in the story. Recently her reputation has taken on a more notorious side when she based a story off of the local murder of a college student. It isn't uncommon for writers to draw off of news events or another persons life story. Truth is stranger than fiction and life can have a stronger dramatic impact than anything a person can make up. Joyce capitalized on that fact by writing a particularly harsh story based on recent events surrounding the death of a local college student. The story is well written and can be used as a cautionary tale warning of the dangers of binge drinking on college campuses. What many people will find disturbing is how you are never left with a clear resolut

BUFFALO: I used to imagine that I would be more happy at this stage of my life, living in the bosom of my family and all, growing old gracefully with a woman who loved and understood me... BIRD: And? BUFFALO: That I'd be more relaxed and mellow, and a bit wiser and more philosophical about life and so on. BIRD: What's brought all this on? BUFFALO: The hat.
