I've not seen the movie yet, but I was watching the trailer the other day, and it's now pretty much at the top of my to-see list.Certainly because some of my friends already saw it, and they all agreed; if you like music, in particular the early post punk, you'll love this film!Basically the story is about Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division (from 1977 till 1980), who died rather young at age 23 committing suicide.Based on the book of Deborah Curtis, directed by debutant Anton Corbijn (best known for his magnificent music photographs). You’ve probably never heard of Ian Curtis, and that is a damn shame. The eccentric Englishman was the founder and lead singer of Joy Division (that band that wrote “Love Will Tear Us Apart”), and his work had a direct and dramatic effect on Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, U2, and even The Cure. With his marriage crumbling and epileptic seizures disrupting his work, Ian Curtis hung himself, while Iggy Pop’s The Idiot was screaming its way on loop

In retrospect, the second and final album by this Manchester postpunk band seems to point straight at singer Ian Curtis's suicide, which happened a few months before it was released. The band's reverberating mesh of minor-key lines and Curtis's tremorous bass voice are doomy enough on their own, and attention to the words reveals references to blacker-than-black stories by J.G. Ballard and Joseph Conrad; the void and its terrors were splitting Curtis apart from the inside. "I put my trust in you," he sings, and his voice leaves no doubt that that trust has been betrayed. But the music, grim and powerful as it is, points to the direction the surviving members took as New Order, incorporating the mechanical gravity of club rhythms.

Still is one of those records which is like a pack of cigarettes - you'll only ever try it for the first time in your teens, and you won't like it much at first, but there's something about it which will make you persevere. And one day (still in your teens, most likely) you'll stand back and think, 'by George, this is one holy record!'. More to the point, you'll think Joy Division were one holy band, which they were. (I should point out to any happyclappers who may be reading, that this is holy only to the gods of Rock 'N' Roll - Cat Stevens this is NOT). While it is an odd patchwork of out-takes, b-sides and live material, Still gives a better view of what Joy Division were than either of their studio albums (though their singles, notably, which never appeared on albums, were generally far better recorded and available on CD). Während sich “New Order”, die Ãœberreste von Joy Division, wohl gerade frisch getrennt haben sollen, hat der Niederländer Anton Corbijn, der mit “Control” dem seligen Ian Curtis eine Hommage abliefert, das Festival in Cannes eröffnet. Ganz in schwarz-weiss gehalten, wird hier die (wohl nicht immer akurate) Biographie des Joy Division Sängers erzählt. Das ambivalente Leben und die Karriere von Ian bieten genug Sprengstoff, um bei einer Verfilmung leicht in melodramatischen Kitsch abzurutschen. Diese Gefahr, scheint es, hat “Control” sicher umschifft, waren doch die Kritiken für Sam Riley (Ian Curtis) und “Control” gnädig, erste Ausschnitte positiv. Ich darf mich freuen.
