This video is already being posted in hundreds of blogs around the world. But I still feel like posting it here. This boy was bullied for his love of choir music (among other things) but now he's a popular guy as he wins the Britain's Got Talent Show (hopefully winning the grand final). This boy reminds me of the movie ABOUT A BOY. If you've watched the movie About A Boy - don't you think this boy's story has a little bit of similarity?Funny, the other day I was just thinking of posting something about "how to protect our kids from bullies" and today I saw this at My Daily Ramblings Rendezvous Blog. Alan Johnston's answers
Alan Johnston is a BBC reporter who was held hostage in Gaza for 114 days. On the BBC website he answers readers questions in (what seems to me) quite a fair, honest and evenhanded way.Of course his kidnapping led him to a higher opinion of Palestinians in general (it was only the hostage takers themselves who weren't very nice, and some of them were almost embarrassed about it), and he sees a lot of good in the Palestinian people (which is reasonable, because there is). He also thinks that the Jewish claim to Israel is purely a religious one, and seems to ignore history, international resolutions and the persecution that ultimately led to the State. But he has quotes like this, which IMHO show a better understanding of the conflict, and the likelihood of peace, than many of our politicians seem to have (and may I take this opportunity to wish our Prime Minister a Refuah Shleima - but couldn't you at least have used it as an excuse to avoid Annapolis?).Q: How has your experience shape

      Interview with Alan Johnston
In an interview for BBC1's Panorama, BBC journalist Alan Johnston described how he visualized being beheaded during his 114 days in captivity in Gaza: “I imagined being put into that red suit they would make me wear for videos. I imagined one of them in a hood and one of them putting a knee in my back, and then my throat being cut. I even imagined the blood draining from my head.” ... He said he had few conversations with his captors, but that in one, a leader of the Islamist group "described me as a prisoner in the war between Muslims and non-Muslims, a phrase which saddened me really". "I guess I'm a non-Muslim but I'm really not at war with anybody." That doesn't matter to certain people who have a lot of faith... Frances Benjamin Johnston
While surfing the other day I ran across a portrait of "Frannie" Benjamin. I'd never heard of her before but the photograph grabbed my attention, especially the caption. "Frances Benjamin Johnston, full-length portrait, seated in front of fireplace, facing left, holding cigarette in one hand and a beer stein in the other, in her Washington, D.C. studio, 1896." Uhhhhh....???? 1896? Beer stein? Cigarette? Did they say 1896 or 1996?I am also intrigued by the statue or whatever that thing is to the right of the photograph on the table. What is it? Check out all the photographs of men on her mantle? Yes, she was one of the earliest female photo journalist and it seems she was pretty spunky too. Learn more about her on Wikipedia. Daniel Johnston - Yip/Jump Music
This album captures a summer of musicality in the life of a young, unabashed songwriter. After watching "The Devil in Daniel Johnston" I was compelled to pick up some of his music. His work is extremely raw and revealing. There is a level of intimacy seldom conveyed in recorded music. It is not something that you would or could listen to constantly but it is powerful while you do. My emotional response when listening has ranged from outright joy to subtle embarrassment. Again, you will inevitably be taken aback by the vulnerability in the music, especially on tracks like "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances" where an upbeat Daniel encourages "everyone" to join in although he is most likely alone in his sister's garage pounding out the tune on a toy organ. Not for everyone but very important to some.

Daniel Johnston - Continued Story/Hi How Are You?
Released in late 2006 around the time that the acclaimed documentary THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON was issued on DVD, this compilation collects two of the troubled indie-rock troubadour's mid-1980s albums, which were originally distributed by the Austin, Texas, resident on cassette tape. At times painfully spare, these songs get to the heart of Johnston's fractured yet fascinating aesthetic, with his helium-voiced yelp relating tales of isolation, frustration, and escapism over what is often little more than a muffed piano or acoustic-guitar line. Despite the off-key, lo-fi presentation, the brilliance of Johnston's songwriting frequently shines through, as on the urgent existential number "Walking the Cow" and the beautifully wistful ballad "Hey Joe" (later covered to wonderful effect by Sparklehorse). Also of interest is Johnston's reverent, minimal reading of the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There," which finds the performer occasionally accompanying his nasal singing with the

      Daniel Johnston - Fun
Johnston, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, has been classified as an outsider musician. His songs are typically painfully direct, and often display a disturbing blend of childlike naïveté with darker, "spooky" themes. Johnston's earliest recordings present him singing in a high register. However, throughout the nineties his voice acquired a new character and tone and an altogether different style of delivery and diction. This may have been inspired by a mixture of the damage done by smoking, tooth loss and medication prescribed to control his bipolar disorder. His performances often seem faltering or uncertain; one critic writes that Johnston's recordings range from spotty to brilliant. The major labels have finally figured out that while extremely uneven homemade tapes sound like crap as demos, they can come off as pure eccentric brilliance when released commercially. So goes the story of Daniel Johnston: two-track loser in Slackertown U.S.A. (Austin, Texas) since 1980,

From the BBC:BBC correspondent Alan Johnston has been released by kidnappers in Gaza after nearly four months in captivity. He said it was "fantastic" to be free after an "appalling experience". TV footage showed Mr Johnston, 45, leaving a building accompanied by armed men. He later appeared beside Hamas leader Ismail Haniya and thanked everyone who had worked for his release. Rallies worldwide had called for Mr Johnston's release. An online petition was signed by some 200,000 people. The BBC reporter was handed over to officials of the Hamas administration in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Gunmen from the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement overran Gaza last month, expelling their rivals from the Fatah faction. Links 6/1: Alan Johnston, The EU and Russia, Exonerated Prisoners, Giuliani vs. Conservative Catholics
A video has been released of the kidnapped BBC reporter Alan Johnston. “The EU has no strategy over how to deal with this new Russia,” while Russia claims that the US is starting an “arms race.” Meanwhile, Western European leaders such as Merkel, Sarkozy, and (soon-to-be Prime Minister?) Gordon Brown seem to be more pro-American than European leaders have been for quite some time. As DNA evidence continues to exonerate wrongly convicted prisoners, what do states owe them? Canadian troops to rotate out of Afghanistan? Conservative Catholics take on Giuliani. And finally… Today in Canadian History: June 1st, 1916… …prohibition began in Manitoba, a step taken by both Alberta and British Columbia shortly thereafter. Daniel Johnston - Live @ Southgate House
Daniel Johnston has been called many things during his time in the spotlight, some call him crazy, untalented and even worse. Others tag him as the “Indie Brian Wilson” due to his mental issues, but amazing songwriting ability. For those that have seen the documentary on the man, “The Devil And Daniel Johnston” know that simply dismissing Johnston as crazy, is a monumental mistake. Daniel played here in the Cincinnati area this weekend, on Friday night at The Southgate House. The show was part of a big tour for Daniel, who usually does not play much outside of his home state of Texas. The venue filled very quickly and the local openers saw more people in the room to hear them play than some have seen in quite awhile as a result. As the crowd packed in I could already hear people who were appreciative of Daniel and felt they could relate to his struggle. A few people nearby even mentioned they had driven all the way from Florida to attend the show. Danie

poster done by Brian Methe Don’t forget Cincy folks, tonight at The Southgate House in Newport, singer songwriter Daniel Johnston will be performing. This will be my first time catching Daniel live so I’m excited to take in a set from him. Daniel has written so many great songs that have been covered by so many artists that have a deep respect for his music. This was probably best represented on the 2004 double disc, The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered. The album featured a disc of Daniel’s music and another disc of all cover songs. Among those that contributed cover songs were Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, M. Ward, Beck and The Flaming Lips. So head on over to the Southgate House tonight for what should be a great night of music. Also performing is local singer songwriter Matthew Shelton, I am looking forward to his set as well. Daniel Johnston Coming to Cincinnati, Now A Nazi?
Imagine my excitement to see that Daniel Johnston is slated to be coming to Cincinnati this spring, only to turn a corner and hear about his recent Nazi loving exploits at his show in Austin during SXSW. Daniel’s mental issues are well documented, mostly by himself, and came to the surface in the documentary, “The Devil And Daniel Johnston”, which is still the best music documentary I have ever seen. But, back to Daniel’s recent antisemitism, here is a quote from IndyWeekBlog that gives a short piece of dialouge from a performance Daniel did last week in Austin. Today at the Convention Center, Austin icon and OG “outsider artist” Daniel Johnston told two jokes before a jam-packed day stage crowd: 1. “I heard they just sentenced a man to the death penalty… for trying to commit suicide.” 2. “I heard the Jews are having a pajama party… at the concentration camp.” Daniel punctuated the last one, which drew a pretty uncomfortable silence, with a Nazi
