BBC journalist Alan Johnston has been released after 114 days in captivity in Gaza. Alan’s picture has been in my sidebar for most of that time. I’ll leave him there until tomorrow. TV footage showed Mr Johnston, 45, leaving a building accompanied by armed men. He later appeared beside Hamas leader Ismail Haniya and thanked everyone who had worked for his release. Rallies worldwide had called for Mr Johnston's release. An online petition was signed by some 200,000 people. The BBC reporter was handed over to officials of the Hamas administration in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Gunmen from the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement overran Gaza last month, expelling their rivals from the Fatah faction. Daniel Johnston has been called many things during his time in the spotlight, some call him crazy, untalented and even worse. Others tag him as the “Indie Brian Wilson” due to his mental issues, but amazing songwriting ability. For those that have seen the documentary on the man, “The Devil And Daniel Johnston” know that simply dismissing Johnston as crazy, is a monumental mistake.
Daniel played here in the Cincinnati area this weekend, on Friday night at The Southgate House. The show was part of a big tour for Daniel, who usually does not play much outside of his home state of Texas. The venue filled very quickly and the local openers saw more people in the room to hear them play than some have seen in quite awhile as a result. As the crowd packed in I could already hear people who were appreciative of Daniel and felt they could relate to his struggle. A few people nearby even mentioned they had driven all the way from Florida to attend the show.
