      Flashback: Hello, I’m Johnny Cash…
That’s the way one of my favorite live albums starts, that deep baritone voice, with the soft Southern accent. This is followed by one of the most familiar guitar licks you’ll ever hear and… “I hear the train a comin’ It’s rollin’ ’round the bend, And I ain’t seen the sunshine, Since, I don’t know when, I’m stuck in Folsom [...]

      Johnny Cash

Junior High Memento: Johnny Cash's Hurt
It’s Thursday and that means it’s time for another installment of your favorite column about music videos. My initial goal for this weekly was to highlight clips that were at least a decade old, but a few days ago, I was listening to some Johnny Cash and remembered his hauntingly brilliant 2002 cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt.” Being a huge fan of both Nine Inch Nails and The Man In Black, I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pay homage to this work

The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash Play Texas
“Walk Alone and Distance Between, that built a hardcore fanbase for the band and yet achieved a critical recognition that most singer-songwriters would slit their left wrist to gain. It was an enviable position, as long as you didn’t have to do all the work that went with it.” - Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash biography Just those few lines make me want to head to Texas to hear this band with the quirky name! Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash are a touring band and they’re all over Texas this month. They played at a pub there Monday, so I missed it. The story goes that this band was started because of a dream. Mark Stuart drempt up the name, which became a joke, and then became a country music band. Amazing enough, that band was not a joke. Johnny Cash liked them and his son helped produce the album. (Whoever wrote this biography is an amazing writer). Stuart says his band came like a calling. I’m already a fan. The other members of the 5 member band are Vance Haze

Johnny Cash - Get Rhythm (1956)
Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock & roll, and his rebellious attitude and simple, direct musical attack shared a lot of similarities with rock. However, there was a deep sense of history -- as he would later illustrate with his series of historical albums -- that kept him forever tied with country. And he was one of country music's biggest stars of the '50s and '60s, scoring well over 100 hit singles.Cash was born and raised in Arkansas, moving to Dyess when he was three. By the time he was 12 years old, he had begun writing his own

My Latest Music Obsession - Johnny Cash
It's sort of funny how music can strike a chord (pun intended) at certain times of our lives and not others. I've heard Johnny Cash's, music before - I mean who hasn't? I would listen and definitely recognized the music as his, but never liked the music enough to go out to buy any of his albums. Recently, something about his music and song writing has clicked with me and I've been listening to The Legend of Johnny Cash in my studio while I work nearly every day this week. I don't seem to tire of listening to the album. One of the songs on the album is his rendition of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, not exactly the same musical genre. When I first heard Johnny singing the song, I thought to myself, where have I heard this song before. I just wasn't putting NIN and Johnny Cash together. Anyway, I guess I'm grooving to his sense of humor and storytelling. Meanwhile in the studio, I don't have much to show and tell. A moment of panic set in yesterday as I was attaching handles

Number 624Johnny Cash"(Ghost) Riders In The Sky"(1986)Genre:CountryYes, i said i would watch the film when "Johnny Cash" was last in the "Definitive 1000" but ah, still have not found the time. Plus! i have read some certain reviews affectionate to the Man In Black that it was not worth watching. But who gives a rats bottom what reviewers think, right? Just Look at some of the reviews by Rolling Stone Magazine. Shocking. This track by Johnny Cash has to be one of the coolest he ever did, just adding more to his dark persona. Yippee Yi Yay!26.02.32 to 12.09.03When Johnny Cash died in 2003, he left behind a vast legacy of recorded music spanning half a century. Cash was a mythical figure who embodied much of what was good, bad, and sometimes contradictory about America. In his early days on Sun Records, he walked the line between rockabilly and country, demonstrating a common touch that appealed to both audiences. He was a born-again Christian whose gospel albums thundered with indignatio

Recommendation : Johnny Cash - The Man in Black
The Man in Black: 1954-1958The Man in Black: 1954-1958 is a five-disc box set that includes everything Johnny Cash recorded for Sun Records, plus the fruits of his first year with Columbia Records. In addition to all of the classic singles -- from "Hey Porter" to "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," they're all here -- there is a wealth of unreleased material and alternate takes, including a disc that captures an entire recording session from his early days with Columbia. The problem with the set is its very comprehensiveness -- only dedicated fans or historians can listen to this much music, especially with all of the alternate takes mixed in with the official versions. And the disc with the recording session isn't interesting -- it's a curiosity that makes for tedious listening. Certainly anyone who is willing to invest in this expensive box will find it rewarding, but only serious listeners should consider purchasing the set.Johnny Cash - The Man in Black (1959-62)Picking up where th

Johnny Cash's Home Fell In To A Burning Ring Of Fire
During a series of renovations by new owner Barry Gibbs of Bee Gees fame, dearly departed Johnny Cash’s Nashville home went up in flames Tuesday. Following June’s demise and then his, it’s arguably the third saddest event to befall the late country icon. That’s because it was much more than just a house—it was a staple of Cash’s life, and a place where music greats gathered for jam sessions back in the day.

Johnny Cash on partisan politics (repost)
This song was on Johnny's 1966 album titled Everybody Loves a Nut. Us youngins would sing while Deddy accompanied on the guitar, but none of us knew it was a heavy political ditty or what the lyrics meant back then. 'Cept for Deddy and Momma, of course. To us kids, a person who was "on the right" was "physically on the right side," and the same went for anyone who was "on the left." And the song was just a funny song. Politics ain't had nothin' to do with it.Is left bad? Is right good? Is right bad? Is left good? What about east and west?I ain't never been able to get my shoes on the correct foot the first time. But I be digressin'.Johnny's song makes a lot more sense now that I'm all growed up. I reckon.

Johnny Cash is a legend and no denying that, whether it be his music or persona. I haven't seen the film yet, but i am looking forward to watching it.26.02.32 to 12.09.03As an emeritus member of both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, winner of the 1991 Grammy Legend Award, and with more than a hundred and fifty charted hits to his credit, Johnny Cash is the Grand Old Man of Nashville. The son of an Arkansas sharecropper, Cash grew up dirt-poor (he nearly died of starvation as an infant). He went on to stints in the Army and as an appliance salesman before making it big. In 1955, he signed with Sam Phillips Sun Records, joining Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins (the foursome known as "The Million-Dollar Quartet"). Johnny Cash - Man in Black
Well, you wonder why I always dress in black, Why you never see bright colors on my back, And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone. Well, there’s a reason for the things that I have on. I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, But is there because he’s a victim of the times. I wear the black for those who never read, Or listened to the words that Jesus said, About the road to happiness through love and charity, Why, you’d think He’s talking straight to you and me. Well, we’re doin’ mighty fine, I do suppose, In our streak of lightnin’ cars and fancy clothes, But just so we’re reminded of the ones who are held back, Up front there ought ‘a be a Man In Black. I wear it for the sick and lonely old, For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold, I wear
