Whenever I get into arguments with people on the Left regarding capitalism and free markets, I give them such a thrashing that they eventually get backed into a corner. When their weak arguments have nowhere else to turn, they attempt to change the subject by asserting that all capitalism's progress is going to cause global warming; then I know I have won the debate.Nevertheless, I often get into

Quality Starts at a Premium for AmazinsWhen the Mets traded for Johan Santana, the New York media and Met die hards instantly proclaimed that this was the move that would put the Mets over the top. He was going to eat up innings to alleviate the strain on the bullpen. That strain was seen as the culprit in the team's historic collapse last September.I agreed with those sentiments. What I disagreed with was the term 'top'.The 'top' of what? Certainly not the top of the National League East.He will only pitch every fifth day. What will happen on the days Santana doesn't pitch? After the trade, Santana instantly became the Mets ace. How could he not? Pedro Martinez is finished. I felt that might be the case, but most Met fans seemed to think he was going to return to his old form. I knew that

Hedberg's nickname is "Moose" or rarely but more preferably "Jo-Jo", pronounced ''yo-yo''. When he played for Pittsburgh, the home crowds would cheer for him after a spectacular save by yelling "Moooooseeee". This was often heard incorrectly as a boo. Fans quickly nicknamed him "Moose" out of necessity - Hedberg started a game in Pittsburgh on late notice and as a result was still wearing his customized Manitoba Moose helmet which, not surprisingly, had a large moose painted across it.

He has been performing since the 1970's having all kinds of artistic installations but what really made him famous are his Still-life performances. These include the "Proletarian Mural" and "Tarzan", displayed below, which were performed on the streets of Germany. Internationally, he is still semi-unknown. The performances featured in his Still-life series involve some form of optical illusions that make him look like he is defying the laws of gravity. They seem really impossible. Let me know if you figure out how they are done.

...Another great article from The Daily News. The article takes a closer look into Johan Santana and how having him on the Mets is such a great thing. The following comes from the article:"Here is a different sort of lefty starter, a bit of Yankee-style, big-market thievery. Santana is a Cy Young winner transplanted in mid-delivery at age 29 from one of those pathetic, budget-strapped franchises in the Midwest. Easy to use: Just plug him into the mound and watch the pop-ups. "How many times do you get a guy this good, in his prime, at his best?" said Ron Darling, who was here Monday as an SNY announcer to describe Santana's three-hit debut. "You see everything with him. For Dwight, it never quite happened that his physical and intellectual talents came together at the same time. For Dwight,
...Great 2008 preview form the Daily News and Adam Rubin. It takes a look back at the Mets offseason, the pursuit of Johan and into spring training.Remember this?"Let me tell you this: Without Santana, we felt as a team we have a chance to win in our division. With him now, I have no doubt that we're going to win in our division. I have no doubt in that," the normally soft-spoken Beltran said upon his arrival at camp. "We've got what it takes. We have good chemistry as a team. He fits great because he's a great guy. He's one of the best pitchers in the game. Who doesn't want to have him on any ballclub? Without him last year we did good, until the end of the season. So this year, to Jimmy Rollins, we are the team to beat."CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE

...Great article from the Mets AAA affiliate New Orleans Zephyrs website and writer Jonathan Mayo: The future success of every Major League team lies in its Minor League system. With that in mind, each preseason, MLB.com takes a top-to-bottom look at all 30 organizations, from top prospects to recent draft picks. The Mets will be the first to say that reports of the farm system's demise following the Johan Santana deal have been greatly exaggerated. Yes, the Mets gave up four of their top 10 or so prospects in the deal for the left-hander. Yes, they lost other talented Minor Leaguers in deadline deals last summer. But the cupboard, they insist, is not bare. It certainly ain't what it used to be, no matter how it's portrayed. But that's life in New York, where winning now is Rule No. 1 an

Mets 1, Red Sox 1at Port St. Lucie, Fla.Monday, March 10 Red Sox at the plate: Continuing to fight for the starting job in center field, Jacoby Ellsbury was the only Sox regular who could even touch Mets starter Johan Santana. He led off the game with a single and later added another, though neither of his two hits turned into runs. In the ninth inning, a Brandon Moss sacrifice fly scored pinch-runner Ryan Khoury. Mets at the plate: After seven innings of futility against Red Sox pitching, the Mets finally broke through when infielder Argenis Reyes hit a ground ball just softly enough to score Angel Pagan from third base. Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, each returning from injury, finished a combined 0-for-5. Red Sox on the mound: Starter Jon Lester was every bit as impressive as his

Hey Sportsflow readers, I am back again for another baseball personnel post. FINALLY, Johan Santana is officially not a member of the Minnesota Twins. I can’t believe the Red Sox finally gave up Lester and Ellsbury to get it done! Wait… I mean, I couldn’t believe it when I heard the Yankees gave up Melky, Hughes, AND Kennedy. Damnit… the Mariners gave up Adam Jones and Sherrill?Nope. As it turns out, in the end it wasn’t the best offer that won the BINGO for Johan, but the most persistent. The New York Mets were in these talks from a bit after the get-go, but they were far and away the most persistent. The Yankees vs. Red Sox For-The-Best-Player-In-The-Game II (Last decision: NYY gets A-rod, BOS gets the 2 championships) turned out to be a dud. Not only was it a dud, but
Rays and Twins Close to a deal
The Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays are close to making a six player deal that would include Delmon Young and Matt Garza.
This would be a great deal for both sides because the Twins recently lost Outfielder Torii Hunter to the Angels and need to replace his hitting in the outfiend. The Rays, who have a surplus of outfielders, are in bad need of pitching. Both of these players are great prospects and if Delmon Young can keep his temper under control he has all the tools to be a great player.
Young, 22, hit .288 with 13 home runs and 93 RBIs in his first full major league season. Garza, 24, was 5-7 with a 3.69 ERA in 15 starts for the Twins in 2007.
Delmon Young is probably best known for throwing his bat at an umpire in his minor league days. Check it out.
In his defense, the ball was way outside…

Well, it looks like Johan Santana remaining in Minnesota seems to be diminishing by the day. The Twins are attempting to keep one of the best arms in the game, but they are not getting cooperation from Santana and his people. From CNNSI.com: "The Minnesota Twins recently offered superstar pitcher Johan Santana a four-year extension for about $80 million, SI.com has learned, leaving a sizable and significant gap in contract negotiations and perhaps even enhancing the chances that Santana may be traded this winter, possibly even by end of the Winter Meetings, which run from Dec. 3-7 in Nashville, Tenn. The Twins have been telling people they will do their best to retain Santana, who is considered the sports' most dynamic pitcher and is still only 28. However, two executives on competing teams said they foresaw little likelihood the Twins could keep Santana long-term barring a stunning turnaround in negotiations, and one said he believed Santana is "out there'' already as a trade possibi
Johan Santana may be into his last days of being in a Minnesota Twins uniform. From Buster Olney's blog on ESPN.com: "Rival general managers say that in recent days, Minnesota’s Bill Smith is quietly gauging the market for left-hander Johan Santana, determining what deals he might have, in the aftermath of the report that Santana turned down a five-year, $93 million offer from the Twins. The Mets will be among the most aggressive teams in any Santana bidding."I'm sure if the Twins don't sign Johan to a long term deal or get the talks into an advanced stage this winter, I'd say he's going to be traded. The Twins being a small market team may not be able to afford the services of Santana, especially if he is looking at a deal over $18 million per year.Expect his name to have a large buzz and the big-money powerhouses such as the Yankees, Mets, and a few others jockeying for position for one of the pre-eminent left handers in the game today, and perhaps in the future, in the histor
It’s not over at MLB yet. While this MLB Season is over, the excitement of picking the best baseball players of the last months is taking everyone’s breath. Now, the Cy Young award has a new owner: Johan Santana.
What makes this year’s Cy Young so outstanding is the fact that Santana was an unanimous choice for the award (again). This is the second time in 3 years that the Minnesota Twins star pitcher takes the American League Cy Young award home (the other one was in 2004), and he’s also the 5th pitcher to get it unanimously at least twice. Chien-Ming Wang, from the New York Yankees, was 2nd with just 51 points (Santana got the overwhelming result of 140 points).
It’s obvious that Johan Santana knows where he’s standing, and once he plays so well to deserve an award like this (again, by unanimous choice!), it becomes easier to make it again. He admitted that he wasn’t even that surprise for winning the Cy Young as he was last time. Of course, history is going

At the beginning of the year (probably around June 9th), there were a bunch of “What’s Wrong With Johan” articles, because Santana had started the season 6-6. This, of course, was dumb, because he had a 3.24 ERA, and had struck out 96 in 86 innings- there was very little wrong with Johan, beyond the fact that the Twins had scored three or less runs in 9 of his 13 starts. Predictably, Santana has improved since, and now stands at 14-9 with a 2.97 ERA. However, there is a disturbing trend that had been true throughout the year. Here is Santana’s ERA (in red), and his FIP (Fielding Independent ERA, based soley on K/9, BB/9, and HR/9 (in blue), for each year since ’04.The disturbing thing about this year’s performance has been the spike in FIP. The reason for the increase is quite obvious.Well, that’s bad. He’s gone from giving up 0.91 HR/9 over the last three years to 1.34 HR/9 this year, which is the only reason his FIP has increased so drastically (his BB/9 and K/9 are bo
"Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson said Santana threw only four sliders, meaning the other 108 pitches were all fastballs and changeups." -Star Tribune, via NeyerAt about 3pm yesterday I noticed online that Johan Santana had stuck out 7 hitters through three perfect innings. Rarely is it this obvious that one has a chance to witness something special, so I tuned in.Over the next five innings, Santana continued at this pace, finishing with 17 K's through 8 (video). Although I found myself yelling at the TV as Gardenhire decided to bring Joe Nathan in for the 9th, I understood his decision, as Santana had thrown 112 pitches. For good reason, the Twins are very cautious with Johan, who actually has never thrown over 120 pitches in his career. In the end, I was forced to settle for having seen the best performance of Johan Santana's career (according to Game Score, the second best was a 2004 start against the Royals, where he threw a CG 3-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking 2).In t
Johan Santana set a franchise record with 17 strikeouts in eight innings to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Texas Rangers 1-0 Sunday.
Santana’s 17 strikeouts were the most in the majors since Ben Sheets fanned 18 in Milwaukee’s 4-1 win over Atlanta on May 16, 2004, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He broke the Minnesota record of 15, accomplished four times - the last by Bert Blyleven on Aug. 1, 1986, against Oakland.
It was the fifth time this year Santana has reached double digits in strikeouts. He struck out 13 in a 7-1 win at Texas on May 22.
