As with the other books in the "Wonders of the World" series, Simon Goldhill concentrates on a single building from history, and examines it's architectural, historical, social and cultural impact. Unlike most of the others, his task is made much harder by the simple fact that the Temple of Jerusalem was pretty much flattened on 28th August 70AD (in the morning we're told).

While many Diaspora Jews consider their Israeli homes an important investment in the Jewish state, many locals say absentee homeowners have driven up market prices, drained the market of available rentals and made many Jerusalem neighborhoods unaffordable for Israelis. That's why a coalition of student activists has launched a campaign to persuade the absentee homeowners to open up their homes to Israeli renters."We think it's great that foreign Jews are buying here and investing in Jerusalem," said David Uziel, 29, a graduate student in urban planning at Hebrew University. "But if they keep their apartments empty, they are weakening Jerusalem."

Israel is a country in Western Asia located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan in the east, and Egypt on the southwest, and contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. The West Bank and Gaza Strip, which are partially administrated by the Palestinian National Authority, are also adjacent. With a population of about 7.2 million, the majority of whom are Jews, Israel is the world's only Jewish state. It is also home to Arab Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Samaritans, as well as other religious and ethnic minority groups. The modern state of Israel has its roots in the Land of Israel, a concept central to Judaism for over three thousand years. Independent since 1947, Israel has been in
Over the next six months Israeli and PA negotiators are expected to finalize an agreement that will include dividing Jerusalem, flooding Israel with Palestinian immigrants and an Israeli withdrawal to the 1948 Armistice Line.

Property deals in the second half of 2007 were closing at levels similar to the first half of 2007, as israel real estate price increases began slowing. The flow of overseas buyers has slowed greatly in recent months. The primary explanation for this slowdown is the economic crisis in the U.S. and the collapse of the dollar. Nevertheless, there is a feeling among prospective apartment buyers that Jerusalem property owners are asking too much for exclusive homes."There certainly is a slowdown," one agent says. "There is a feeling that while foreign residents behaved naively in the past and bought just about anything for any price, they are now wiser."

The Israeli retention of Greater Jerusalem and the Temple Mount represents a fundamental Human Right for the Jewish people. When the Jordanian government held Jerusalem between 1948-1967, Jewish holy sites were desecrated and Jews were allowed no free access to their most holy of places. Whereas Israel guarantees freedom of religion to all who live under her protection. As we have mentioned before, time and place have more profound meaning in Judaism than in Christianity. Jews may never, under the terms of their faith, forsake Jerusalem. Indeed, whether in the Holy Land or in exile Jews have prayed towards the Temple Mount in Jerusalem for the past 3000 years. There is no Judaism without Jerusalem.Fundamental International Laws are called Jus Cogens. There is much academic debate over whe

Sometimes religion and politics do mix and in some places in the world, they have no choice but to. Jerusalem is such a place. The generally held belief, however, of Jerusalem being equally holy to three religions is simply not true.Unlike other faiths, Judaism has but one religious center in the world, and that place has remained so for some 3000 years. Jerusalem.Whereas Christianity moved its religious seat from Jerusalem to "New Jerusalem" (aka, Rome) to "New Rome" (aka Constantinople/Istanbul) and so on, Judaism is under Biblical directives to never exchange its religious seat for any other.Time and place have such profound meaning in Judaism. And Islam does not embrace Jerusalem but rejects it for Mecca and Medina. Therefore, the question of retention of Jerusalem in Israeli sovereignt

Israeli says elusive biblical wall found
JERUSALEM - A wall mentioned in the Bible’s Book of Nehemiah and long sought by archaeologists apparently has been found, an Israeli archaeologist says.
A team of archaeologists discovered the wall in Jerusalem’s ancient City of David during a rescue attempt on a tower that was in danger of collapse, said Eilat Mazar, head of the Institute of Archaeology at the Shalem Center, a Jerusalem-based research and educational institute, and leader of the dig.
Artifacts including pottery shards and arrowheads found under the tower suggested that both the tower and the nearby wall are from the 5th century B.C., the time of Nehemiah, Mazar said this week. Scholars previously thought the wall dated to the Hasmonean period from about 142 B.C. to 37 B.C.
The findings suggest that the structure was actually part of the same city wall the Bible says

I like planning my vacations way in advance. I love the process of getting to the actual trip, especially if it involves a country or a city I have never visited before. As I begin planning my next trip abroad, I have been asking myself, "After Europe, what?"The obvious choices are Africa and Australia. I haven't set foot on these continents thus far. While my initial impulse was to do a real African Safari, I have been recently contemplating visiting Morocco and/or Egypt instead. But there is one place that fascinates me no end but I am wary of planning a family vacation in: Israel. Note: Jerusalem picture by Sam Rohn.I read an interesting article on Israel in the Hindustan Times recently. Completely different from the usual stuff you read about continuing hostilities, the killings and the tragedy. The author, Samar Halarnkar, begins with this funny observation: First, let's get this out of the way.

When I am in Israel, a large percentage of my stay goes into assessing the real-estate market and trends going on there. I decided to use at least a few articles to share with you some of the interesting stuff going on there.Since many of us do visit at least once a year, you may recognize some of these trends and say, “Yeah, I noticed that, too!” But for the rest, maybe you will hear something new or something nostalgic that will make Israel seem all that much closer to you here.
I'm posting this to show my solidarity with yidwithlid, Jerusalem and the The United Coalition for Jerusalem.I believe that to show the world, ourselves and G-d how many people care about Jerusalem and don't want it destroyed, will be a kiddush Hashem, and will help us focus in our prayers and efforts to get closer to G-d.HOWEVER, I also believe that G-d is in control. To believe for a moment that Olmert has any kind of authority or power, is to deny that "G-d's eyes are there from the beginning of the year until the end of the year". If G-d is threatening to take Israel away from the Jews, it is not because of Olmert, Barak, Peres or anyone else, but because of us and our actions. The best actions we can take to support Jerusalem are teshuva, prayer, tzedaka (and of course coming here to visit, live etc.).To quote the Mishna at the end of Sotah: When the world goes crazy and everything is the opposite of what it should be - "Who can we rely on? On our Father in Heaven"Here is the p

The Nazareth Cross project aims to strengthen all of the people of Nazareth. It also will dramatically improve the atmosphere for its citizens, tourists, and visiting pilgrims. But at the core of this effort are the people of the city. This is why over half of the project’s income will be invested back into to the Nazareth community.
Here some details of Nazareth History:Nazareth means “Little Root,” and it was in Jesus’ day small and insignificant. Today the largest concentration of Christians within the Holy land can be found in Nazareth. In this city of 60,000, 35% are Christians, and 65% Muslims at Nazareth Jerusalem.

PRESIDENT BUSH UNVEILS BOLD NEW BLUEPRINT FOR PEACE AND HAPPINESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Remarks by the President to a Hand-Picked Audience of Supporters
THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. As a few of you may have heard, the situation between the Israeloids and Palestiniacs continues to deteriorate, despite my administration’s best efforts to appear effectual. Of course, until recently, our Middle East policy was built upon the assumption that the only Americans who give a damn about this conflict were the Jews - and inasmuch as they all voted for Al Gore (or at least meant to), Karl Rove felt it best if we didn’t get too mixed up their little blood feud. But today, not only are an increasing number of non-Jewish Americans telling pollsters that this war might impact how they vote in the mid-term elections, but some prominent petrochemical tycoons are starting to suspect that the situation might escalate to a point where the entire region is destabilized, and ou

The United States, like it or not, has become overwhelmingly dominated by the ideology of the Christian story. The message being delivered is not so much that our founding fathers were Christian; rather, this country was founded on the values of Christian rhetoric and thought. Christian fundamentalist will even go so far to believe believe the wealth of the nation is due to the Lord’s blessing given to us as a sign that we are the “chosen people” with a God-given authorization to establish dominion over the entire planet in order to help the world into an era of peace, prosperity and justice.
Conservative evangelicals’ obsession with Israel is well known. In fact, some go so far to believe that America is the New Israel (the new Promised Land) of God along with the belief that America is to be a benevolent nation seeking only the good of all. They don’t believe that the End Times prophecies can be fulfilled unless certain conditions are met, like that Israel e

Olive Wood Crosses of Jerusalem The olive tree is traditionally a symbol of health and peace. The Olive Wood of Jerusalem is the symbol of Eternal Life and it is well known since ancient time. According to religion believe Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, near Jerusalem near an olive tree, some says that this tree still exists today. The Olive Tree grows in the Holy Land and can survive for up to 2000 years. In the Bible, Noah sent out a dove from the ark to find dry land and the dove returned with an Olive branch. It is said that the Dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. The Olive tree has been highly admired since old times and it is considered as a blessed tree. The people planted olive trees in various parts of the Holy Land to spread its cultivation. The oil from the olives was used to anoint priests, prophets and kings to empower them as well as to pray for their healing. While known for its sturdiness, it is a beautiful wood with grai

Its sedimentary surroundings suggest a seafaring lifestyle for this ancient reptile, but its advanced anatomy could overturn a current theory about the marine origin of snakes. This intriguing new species, dubbed Haasiophis terrasanctus , is the second limbed snake to come from the site of Ein Yabrud, an ancient marine environment broadly similar to the still, coastal waters of today's Bahamian reef. The first such species, Pachyrhachis problematicus, plays a pivotal role in a scenario that places the ancestor of snakes in the sea.But a riddle remains: why do these two snake species have hind limbs? If legs were the norm for snake ancestors, it would make sense to see the species' advanced anatomy as only superficially similar to more modern snakes. On the other hand, the stubb

Tourism Ministry targets 3 million Jews living in the United States, Canada, Britain and France
The website www.bar-mitzvah.org.il has been launched by a group, including the Jerusalem municipality, in order to promote Jerusalem bar/bat mitzvah packages.
For many American parents and grandparents, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in Israel provides a young man or woman with an unbreakable link with what it means to be Jewish. Traveling together, members of family can effortlessly and positively influence their children`s attachment to their Jewish heritage as they experience together the phenomenal renaissance of their ancient homeland. Celebrating a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in Israel leaves treasured memories that last a lifetime.
The Israel Ministry of Tourism is at your service to assist and to point you in the right direction, and give you a full list of service suppliers. Call us at 1-888-77-ISRAEL, remember that no one belongs here more than you.
As we promised, we made the excruciating journey to Jerusalem to bring you some real-time photos of the lovely “United Buddy Bears” project, which came here in the beginning of August. Another rant, I'm afraid. Not content with replacing life in Israel with life in Berlin (or anywhere else for that matter, but in this case it is Berlin), the Orthodox have taken a leaf out of the classic Reform text book. Remember how over 100 years ago the Reform movement removed any mention of Israel and Jerusalem from the siddur. They felt that Germany was home to them much more than some distant land and ancient memory. Well, antisemitism and the holocaust don't seem to have changed some people's understanding of the situation. Berlin (apparently) is still the site of the Temple. Even the neighborhood of Musrara, which until recently has been considered the slums, is attracting many Americans due to its proximity to the center of town and the Kotel, prices there are escalating as well. In fact, all the neighborhoods desirable to foreigners are within a thirty to forty minute walk to the Kotel.
Sometimes and in some places, conflict is so intractable that all but the most unlikely solutions are fated to fail. In those times and places, we need to try methods that have not been considered in the hopes that unconventional solutions will offer opportunities not available through line-drawing. This is such a time; Jerusalem is such a place; shared sovereignty is such a solution. And the benefits can be global.
The term ‘condominium’ has been kicking around in recent weeks as a way of dealing with a peace settle for Jerusalem, recognized by all as one of the true thorns in any two-state solution. What does it mean? What are the danger areas?
This article in the Washington Post entitled For Jerusalem, Shared Sovereignty answers these questions, but warns that, as always, the devil is in the details.
As more and more foreigners snap up prime real estate across the country, pushing the purchase prices of apartments out of the reach of many, an increasing number of young Israelis are finding they're also being priced out of the rental market. "Israel's big cities, mainly Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, are now going through what is known as the Manhattan phenomenon," said Bernard Raskin, regional director of the real estate company Remax-Israel. "The demand for apartments in Tel Aviv is not new, but what is new are the prices that people are now asking for small one and two bedrooms. I have never seen a market like this before."
[Pre-holiday]We drive home after school. “I love bananas. I love bananas. I love bananas,” he chants in the seat directly behind mine. This is his latest quote. He has quoted it continuously for the last 16 minutes, the minutes, short ones, that it has taken us to get from his class room door , to the car. At least it is truthful, as bananas are one of his seventeen foods. [translation = neophobic.]“Are we going to my playdate?” she shouts over the din.“Are we going to my playdate?” echoes her other brother. She sits between the two of them, sandwiched.“I love bananas. I love bananas. I love bananas,” he continues.“Mom, can you make him shut up, I can’t think straight!”“Think straight!” echoes the other.“MOM!” she bellows, “DO SOMETHING!”“DO SOMETHING!” he echoes.I focus on driving safely from point A to point B. [translation = and people moan about cell phone users!]He changes his tune without warning or preamble, “ oooo wooo, déjà vu!
A predawn haze lit the kilometre of road before us. We trudged along it, still groggy from the half hearted slumber of our bus ride from Cairo. Through a small strip ‘of no man’s land’ we entered Israel, and left Egypt behind us. The immigration office was small, with gleaming white tiles on the floor [...]
Yesterday there was a gay pride parade in Jerusalem. Since Jerusalem is a focal point for the three most quarrelsome religions on the planet, it's not hard to anticipate what the reaction would be to a bunch of gay people showing up. There were 3,500 participants, and 1,500 protesters (ultra-Orthodox men and right-wingers):
Some 500 ultra-Orthodox protesters marched along Jaffa Street in the city, in an attempt to intersect the march and confront the participants. Police blocked the demonstrators, however, arresting 12 of them.
...
One man evaded police to approach marchers, yelling: "Filth! Get out of Jerusalem!" He was escorted away by police.
The march took place under heavy guard, with more than 7,000 police officers protecting the participants. The Magen David Adom emergency medical service was expected to deploy 45 ambulances and 200 medical personnel along the parade route.

Earlier Thursday, a resident of the ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem was arrested

Today is the day we celebrate the time when back in 1967, Israel liberated this city from Jordanian rule. Now you've probably heard that the US ambassador to Israel decided to go the route of some EU ambassadors and boycott the invitation they were sent. That's certainly a disgrace that all they can do is rudely shun a polite invitation to join in a festivity, showing only that they've failed to rise above anti-Israelism. The mayor, Uri Lupolianski, said it right when he said:"Anyone who doesn't recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Israel does not recognize the state of Israel." -- Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski, in response to EU, US ambassadors' boycott of Jerusalem Day. 05/13/2007Oh, he's right about that. I'd say that's exactly why the reader, on the other hand, can show their solidarity by joining in the festivities that these ambassadors can't or won't.So enjoy Jerusalem Day, and I hope it'll be good.Others on the subject include Woman Honor Thyself, Jeru
י"ח באייר תשס"זClearly, this not a sacred use of Jerusalem. Is making war how Islamic Jihad envisions a future use of Jerusalem? To make war and to cause death and destruction? This is indeed the message the marked missile sends to me. JPost reports today:A 24-year-old Israeli was moderately wounded by shrapnel and a number of other people were reportedly in shock after a Kassam rocket landed near Sapir College outside Sderot on Sunday afternoon. The rocket, marked in Hebrew "Quds" ("Jerusalem" in Arabic), struck a gas station in Sha'ar Hanegev, and caused damage. The wounded youth was evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.A total of five Kassams have been fired at Israel since Sunday morning.Read full article at link above.Shlomo Wollins of IsraelReporter (via Mystical Paths) reports 9 kassams fired into Sderot since Friday.Technorati tags: terrorism Islamic Jihad Jerusalem Israel social justice Sderot news
The Jerusalem Post: Somalia violence rages on despite UN call for peaceExcerpt:"Artillery shells and mortars rained down on Mogadishu Tuesday after a week of raging battles, despite a plea by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to end the violence that local groups say has left nearly 300 people dead.Islamic insurgents clashed with allied Ethiopian and Somali government forces, using mortars and rocket propelled grenades against tanks and artillery positions in the north of the battle-scarred coastal city."http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1177251159583&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFullAlex

Jerusalem Post: Prime Minister's Office denies peace message to AssadExcerpt:"The Prime Minister's Office issued a rare "clarification" Wednesday that, in gentle diplomatic terms, contradicted US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's statement in Damascus that she had brought a message from Israel about a willingness to engage in peace talks."http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1173879247562&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFullAlex
