The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has recently been made aware of several complaints from pet owners and veterinarians that multiple brands of jerky treats manufactured in China have been making pets sick. Symptoms of illness have included vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. To our knowledge, no deaths have been reported.Guess they don't read my blog. The AVMA posted an alert on its Web site on September 13 to inform its members and the public about what was known. Today, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) issued a statement saying it also has become aware of an unusual number of dogs presenting similar symptoms and abnormal test results associated with consumption of some jerky treats. The ACVIM statement is available at www.acvim.org/uploadedFiles/

So, I've decided to give myself random food challenges. This will not only be to expand my views of certain foods, but my culinary repertoire. I have to admit that I generally think of certain foods to be good for few purposes. Those tried and true recipes that we all know, and don't really diverge from. No more, I say!My first challenge is Raw Butternut Squash. I haven't worked much with winter squashes in my life, and I tend to only make creamy soups from them. About a week ago, I did a couple days of just raw food. I had this lovely butternut squash sitting there, crying at me to be used for something... But squash, how could I use you in my raw food adventures? What wonderful flavours could you possibly bring to my raw table? It just screamed CAROB! I don't know why - it just did.The o

Following reports of pets becoming after eating jerky treats, some manufacturers are starting to add feeding instructions on their packages.
Consumers purchasing chicken jerky pet treats soon may notice something different on the package labels: suggestions on how many such snacks a day they can safely give to their dogs.
Some manufacturers and retailers, responding to complaints that Chinese-made treats were making dogs sick, are developing feeding instructions tailored to an animal’s weight, similar to what is required on pet foods designed to be a primary nutrition source. The move is based on anecdotal reports that owners were overfeeding the treats or using them in place of regular pet food, manufacturers said.

But some suggest the move may be premature. Continuing investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a Cornell University team, which began about two months ago, have uncovered nothing dangerous in the products and have not definitively tied a spi
Jerky treats are in the news again (or is it still?). This time they have been linked to illnesses in at least four pets in the Denver area.
Several weeks ago, Johanna Ohlsson noticed her dog, Emma, was eating less but drinking more. About 10 days ago, the dog stopped eating.
By that time, the 6-year-old dog’s weight had dropped to 19 pounds from 24 pounds.
“When we could encourage her to eat a little bit, she vomited,” said Ohlsson, 51, a Niwot resident.
Tests at a veterinarian’s office Oct. 29 produced curious results. Glucose and proteins were found in Emma’s urine, but those values were normal in her blood, said Tricia Hartwig, a veterinarian with Tender Loving Care in Longmont. The results indicated Fanconi syndrome, an inherited disease affecting kidney function, known to occur only in Basenji dogs, she said. Emma is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Hartwig consulted with Dr. Ellen Miller, an internal medicine specialist at Flatiron Veterinary Clinic, who said those sym
The FDA is warning pet owners about feeding their dogs chicken jerky treats. Here’s the latest on this from Reuters…
WASHINGTON — Chicken jerky treats may have sickened dozens of dogs, federal health officials warned Wednesday despite failing to find any trace of contamination.
The Food and Drug Administration said it’s fielded more than 70 complaints, involving more than 95 dogs, from owners who believe their animals fell sick after eating the products, sold variously as chicken tenders, strips or treats. While most dogs appear to have recovered, an unspecified number died.

The FDA is looking into the jerky treats pulled by Wal-Mart in late July…
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it is checking dog treats recently pulled from Wal-Mart’s shelves but has not yet detected any chemical or biological contamination in the Chinese-made products.
FDA spokeswoman Kimberly Rawlings says the agency is “actively” investigating the products in light of Wal-Mart’s pulling the items from its shelves. She also says the FDA had reviewed Wal-Mart’s lab report that mentions 20 parts per million of melamine, which would NOT be expected to cause animals to get sick.
Melamine is a byproduct of several pesticides. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Deisha Galberth said that with such small amounts of melamine found, its laboratory recommended more testing.
Bentonville-based Wal-Mart said this week it had pulled Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading in July, after customers said th

Earlier this week while shopping with our Foreign Exchange Student, we were in an electronics store and at the check out counter, on a clip-strip there were thin packages of beef sticks for sale. I heard our exchange student laugh so I turned around and he was pointing at the beef stick with a confused look on his face and a grin. Apparently they don't sell those in France. I sure am glad we sell them here!Because of America's history, beef jerky has been around as long as the American Indians have. Cowboys, trappers, hunters and families travelling to new homesteads found it was a great way to preserve their meat and it was light to carry. Growing up, my family always ate it because it tasted so good! When my mother was going through chemo and radiation treatments for Breast Cancer a few years ago, beef jerky was one of the few foods she really liked to eat. We were happy to find something she could keep down that also gave her some protein. At the time she didn't want any

I often wonder why guys even bother to respond to my personal ads. I assume that they send the same email to every ad they think is even possibly real, but these responses are so ridiculous, lame, or offensive that the guy is assuring a non-response right out of the box. And I'm not just talking about the guys who say, "If your real write me back!" At least those are hopeful but clueless. I'm thinking about responses like this one:
Drop the bull-shit bitch....
If you want to get fucked so hard that you wont walk straight for a week,
and your shit will be falling out of your asshole for another week...
Send me your picture and phone-number right-now...
No guy thinks that's an appealing image, right? So he's obviously writing the email to get his aggressive, jerky rocks off. What a waste.
