Jemaah Islamiyah does not exist, says vice-president
The Indonesian vice-president, Jusuf Kalla, says the government cannot ban the militant Islamic group, Jemaah Islamiyah, because it does not exist."Jemaah Islamiyah does not exist as an organisation and therefore it cannot be banned," said Kalla in an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI)."How can we impose a ban? Who is the [group's] president? Where are its headquarters? Who are its members?" asked Kalla.Jemaah Islamiyah is the terrorist group blamed for most of the deadly attacks that have hit Southeast Asia in the last few years. These include the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people and injured 209 others. The group is considered a terrorist organisation in the US, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore but not in Indonesia where it enjoys the support of a minority, particularl

Indonesia Bans Jemaah Islamiyah As Malaysia Arrests Leaders On Way to Syria
When Jemaah Islamiyah leaders Agus Purwantoro and Abu Husna were captured in Malaysia in mid-April they were seeking false travel documents in preparation for meetings in Syria with an unspecified "international terrorist network," according to reports citing Indonesian and Malaysia police. Abu Husna was alleged to be the current leader of JI as of the time of his arrest. What were these two senior JI officials doing going together on a high-risk mission to Syria, which ultimately led to their being...(read more)

Success Against Jemaah Islamiyah As "Bali Three" Near Execution
On October 25, Kenneth Conboy wrote here about the lack of attacks by Jemaah Islamiyah during Ramadan season in Indonesia : "In hindsight, 2007’s Ramadhan fast and Lebaran will probably go down as one of the most peaceful in recent memory. Not only were there no acts of terrorism, but the number of raids by hard-line Muslim vigilante groups against entertainment venues—which were commonplace around 1999—were few and far between." He also wrote of the apparent end of the appeals...(read more)

JEMAAH ISLAMIYAH IN TRANSITION BUT STILL DANGEROUS, SAYS REPORT
Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), the main terrorist group active in Southeast Asia, is in a phase of transition but still remains a threat. This is the conclusion of the report released on Thursday by the International Crisis Group (ICG) on JI, the terrorist group said to be responsible for several attacks, including the two Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005. The report - entitled "Jemaah Islamiyah's Current Status" - states that despite the successes by the Indonesian police, JI can still count on at least 900 members, led by a hardcore group of five to six religious leaders.According to the study by the think-tank, which is considered an authority on regional terrorism in Southeast Asia, JI today prefers attacks aimed against individuals, instead of large scale attacks such as the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people. The change in strategy was necessary because of the cost of carrying out such attacks - JI has less funds that in did in the past - and also because of the negative reaction t

Opinion: A Jemaah Islamiyah surge bodes ill for Poso
INDONESIA’S Central Sulawesi has once more been hit by a rash of bombings, assassinations and terror attacks behind which many see the hand of a regional terror group, writes AMY CHEW."Jemaah Islamiyah is in Poso, its base is there," according to Ansyaad Mbai, head of the counter-terrorism desk at the Co-ordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs."All the violence in Poso is the work of terrorists. For a long time, many parties tended to deny the reality that what was happening in Poso was the work of terrorists," he added.According to Ansyaad, Poso’s jihadis aim to establish an Islamic state. "The terrorists do not acknowledge the democratically-elected government. Their ultimate aim is an Islamic state."

      Jemaah Islamiyah: Special Report
In the aftermath of a second major bombing campaign on the island of Bali, a few background details seem to be in order. We mentioned earlier that straight after the October 1st 2005 bombings, Majelis Mujahadin Indonesia (Indonesia Council of Holy Warriors) rushed to deny that their spiritual leader, Abu Bakar Bashir, was responsible for the recent Bali bomb attacks. Maybe Bashir was not directly involved with the planning, and the Indonesia Council of Holy Warriors were not directly involved with attacks. There are many extremist Islamist groups in Indonesia. Just type "Indonesia" into our Search facility, and you will find several recent instances of Indonesian Islamic terrorism, ranging from simple vigilantism to bomb attacks.
