"Eat Your Jellyfish" : A Primer on the Severely Degraded State of Oceans
In 2006 I read a book that changed how I saw the oceans. Carl Safina's book, "Voyage of the Sea Turtle" drove home to me just how much we've lost. For the first time, I really felt robbed and bitter that generations before me had left a greatly impoverished world. The more time passes, the more it becomes obvious that planet Earth really is a closed system. To create more of anything else (people, more luxurious lifestyles) you have to take from somewhere else. Anything you buy, eat, consume, you're taking from someone or something else. It probably is from poorer people elsewhere, but it's most definitely from other species. The more there are of us, and the more materialistic our lifestyles, the less there is of everything else. When simple living advocates remind us to "Live simply so th

Jellyfish, Salmon and Rising Water Temperatures but no Questions in the UK Media?
News arrived on Wednesday (my apologies as I started writing this a couple of days ago, on the morning of the 21st Nov, but I was unable to post until now because I lost half of what I originally posted..) about the only salmon farm in Northern Ireland being wiped out by jellyfish last week. The (original) BBC article will follow with details. What is interesting is that of the online papers running this story in the UK at the moment (morning of 22nd November, not a single one has mentioned even in passing the environmental questions that really should be asked and indeed have a precedent to be asked. I will expand on this after you read one of the articles: “A jellyfish invasion has wiped out Northern Ireland’s only salmon farm, killing more than 100,000 fish. A Northern Salmon spokesman said last week’s attack could cost more than £1m. Billions of small jellyfish, known as Mauve Stingers, flooded into the cages about a mile into the Irish Sea, off Glenarm Bay and

      Fossil Jellyfish found
October 31, 2007—They didn't have any bones to leave behind, but ten fossilized jellyfish recently discovered in Utah have made an impression in more ways than one. At half a billion years old, the fossils represent the oldest jellyfish ever found and push back the known existence of jellies 205 million years, scientists say. The newfound fossils also offer much greater detail than more recent specimens, which has allowed researchers to link the ancient animals to types of jellyfish living today. "The fossil record is full of circular-shaped blobs, some of which are jellyfish," Paulyn Cartwright, a University of Kansas biologist who was on the research team, said in a press statement. "That's one of the reasons the fossils we describe are so interesting, because you can see a distinct bell shape, tentacles, muscle scars, and possibly even the gonads." Cartwright and her colleagues studied these anatomical features and found that

The body of an adult jellyfish consists of a bell shape producing jelly and enclosing its internal structure, from which tentacles are suspended. Each tentacle is covered with cells called cnidocytes, that can sting or kill other animals. Most jellyfish use these cells to secure prey or for defense. Others, such as Rhizostomae, do not have tentacles at all. Jellyfish lack basic sensory organs and a brain, but their nervous systems and rhopalia allow them to perceive stimuli, such as light and odor, and respond fast. They feed on small fish and zooplankton that become caught in their tentacles. Most jellyfish are passive drifters and slow swimmers, as their shape is not hydrodynamic. Instead, they move so as to create a current forcing the prey within rea

For larger pools, unleash a flotilla to create a crowd-pleasing effect. * Crafted of durable PVC * Realistic, fiber-optic tentacles emit a vibrant glow * Top changes colors throughout the light show * Controlled by a simple auto-off switch Uses four AA batteries (included). My only wish was for it to be solar-powered. That way you can leave it in the pool 24/7 and every night it’ll light up without having you to worry about changing out the batteries or turning it off and on.
