CHICAGO – On the fourth of July in 1862, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson rowed a boat up the River Thames with 10-year-old Alice Liddell. Alice was the daughter of the new dean of Christ Church where Dodgson was employed as a lecturer in mathematics.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Three years later, Dodgson (with the penname Lewis Carroll) wrote of such adventures in a book entitled “Alice’s Adventures in Won

Happy Fourth of July everyone. Now that we have that out of the way…we are only a couple weeks away from training camp. Time flies, huh? If that isn’t enough to make you think about it how about this? We are less than a month (by a day) away from watching a pre-season football game. [...]

This year’s class of wide receivers is a good mix of speed and size guys but lacks a standout top 10 guy. With many high profile offensive teams needing a top WR, this year’s class should prove to have good opportunity to make an immediate impact. A deep class, many teams may choose to wait [...]
The Rams are on the clock. Glenn Dorsey and Chris Long would look good here (or a trade to New Orleans). The Rams would like to start negotiating but the league says notta.

Contra Costa Times has the Raiders Top 5 Draft needs. But as everyone knows, this means nothing to Al Davis.

The Falcons are offering the Big Tuna a front office job. This is interesting. Could cause some friction with President Rich McKay considering when he was with the Bucs he told them he would resign if Parcells was brought in back in 1996.
The fans inKC are crying because that big meany Coach Edwards told them to “get over” the Chiefs record this season.
”People aren’t used to this in Kansas City. Get over it,” Edwards said then. “It happens. It’s called life. You can’t think you’re too big that it’s not going to happen to you. It happens to everybody.”
They just want you to play to win the game Herm…play to win the game.
Kathleen Nelson at STLToday.com asks this question…”Are the Steelers Coming Apart?“Â Nice try Kathy, the Rams are going to get slaughtered.
So, the NFL.com/live thing did show parts of the Packers/Cowboys game in a live stream. A majority of the show was commentary from the studio with live “check in” every now and then. They did tend to go to the game when a team hit the redzone and replayed big plays (most involving T.O.). Wasn’t to me what was advertised but still better than the nothing on my T.V.
The Packers record was not the only one changed Thursday night. Tony Romo broke the Cowboys single season TD record with #30. Terrell Owens tied the TD catch record with 13. Romo also tied a 16 game streak with TD’s. Chances are these will be built upon as we move forward with the season.
Romo is like the new Brady. I just can’t find anything not to like about the kid. He seems like Tom Brady a bit back when Tom Brady looked like he was having fun with the game. Maybe he is the new Favre. At the least he is the new QB that is not an Asshole with a big ego.
“When I got out
Can’t we all just get along? The battle between the NFL Network and Cable companies continues. We are coming into the stretch where eight games will be aired on the NFL Network. November 29th there is an important game that many won’t see, The Packers vs. The Cowboys. I won’t see it. I know, I know…get a satellite, right? Can’t where I live and I can’t move for it.
Cable has the upperhand by not rolling over like the networks do…
“For once we’re in the position of an independent programmer as opposed to a content-seller,” Frank Hawkins, the league’s senior vice president for business affairs, said yesterday. And the resistance has surprised him. Currently, about 8 million of the NFL Network’s 35 million subscribers come from cable; nearly all the rest are from satellite.
On the one hand, I don’t want to pay more for the NFL Network in a sports package on cable, but I would if it was an option. So I will be watching USC
They say that there should not be a playoff in College Football because the whole season is a playoff. That theory is not standing up right now as the Kansas Jayhawks sit at 10-0 and are ranked #3 in the BCS and #4 in the Coaches and Harris Poll. If the season ended today they would not be in the BCS Championship game. Dennis Dodd thinks they are the #1 team right now.
MGOBLOG seems to think that Lloyd Carr will announce his reteirment soon.
Three separate sources indicate that Carr has made his decision to retire official and people around the athletic department are being told. The formal announcement will come after the Ohio State game, possibly at the Monday press conference, possibly a day or two later.
My Mascot is bigger than your Mascot is something that Alabama may be able to say on game day…

The NFL Draft is in for a change. The amount of time for picks for the first round is going to be cut from 15 minutes to 10 minutes (good). The second round will go from 10 minutes to seven minutes (good). The draft won’t start until 3pm instead of noon (bad).
“We believe this will make for a more streamlined and efficient draft,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement issued during the league owners meetings.
Speaking of the draft, the race for the first pick and talk of 0-16 is on with the Dolphins and Rams.
In High School our football coach told our team, “Nobody from Maquoketa has ever made it to the NFL and you won’t either.” Pretty inspirational, huh? I never made it…maybe because I was the smallest Defensive Tackle EVER (I would like to think it was just because I refused to cut my hair so I couldn’t go out for sports in Maquoketa anymore). He changed his tune taking the credit for Sage Rosenfels before an Iow
The whole Chris Chambers trade. First thing that comes to mind is the what I hate most about baseball. Not getting off to a fast start so a team throws in the towel for prospects. Not that I think the Dolphins have any kind of a chance this season. I just don’t like the “We’ll get’em next year” attitude. There are sixteen games in a regular season, I like to think they are all as competitive as possible. I know it’s business but I don’t like it. I’m sure many of the players are pissed off as well. They can say how they will miss Chambers as a person and teammate but you won’t hear much about how it pisses them off that their team is pretty much throwing in the towel…yet. The media is already digging at Jason Taylor and Joey Porter. Wait until they lose a couple close games the D played well but the passing game sputtered even more.
Porter was asked if he would have come to the Dolphins as a free agent i
Amazingly enough, it wasn’t until the thirteenth question at Sean Payton’s press conference that Reggie Bush was brought up.
In the running back rotation, will you give Reggie Bush more carries or will Aaron Stecker take over Deuce’s role?
“Reggie will get more carries. Stecker will be involved and Pierre Thomas will be involved, but you’ll see Reggie get more handoffs.”
There is a new big orange billboard in Denver calling for Ricky Williams to be a Bronco.
First impulse is to think Marc Bulger was benched because he and the Rams have sucked so far this season. Not so says the Coach, it’s because of those ribs. We can look forward to them sucking even with Gus Frerotte.
“Any theories or anything said out there are absolutely not true,” Linehan said. “I look forward to a healthy Marc Bulger getting back in the lineup as soon as possible.
“It’s obvious to me there is something genuinely wrong, and I knew
What happened to the ball that tied Dan Marino’s TD record last weekend? Equipment manager, Red Batty, ran in and swiped it from Greg Jennings and came out of a pile of green and yellow (it’s not gold Packer fans) and came out with the ball. Coach McCarthy didn’t even know what’s up when watching a highlight reel.
“I was like, ‘What the hell is Red Batty doing in there?’” McCarthy said.
Assistant video director Chris Kirby told him, “That’s the ball that tied the record.”
Red will be stalking the sidelines this weekend as well.
“In the game today, you’ve got to be able to capture those moments,” Batty said Friday. “That football is very important to Brett, to the Packers organization, but more importantly to Canton, Ohio, Hall of Fame.”
Meanwhile with the Packers, Vernand Morency is going to play this year, starting this weekend.
Only in a America. Jets fan, Carl Mayer, filed a l
Looks like David Carr is going to get to audition to be that “QB of the future” that everyone talked about when the Panthers signed him. Downer for Carr is Jake D has been playing well.
“Honestly, I do feel better on this team,” Carr said. “I’m more relaxed. I’m not being pressed to do things I don’t need to be doing. I feel like I can go out with my mechanics and all that, and just throwing the football in general, I feel like that just comes naturally and I don’t have to think about it.
“That’s freeing as far as playing quarterback. Now, it’s just completing balls and throwing to the right guy.”
It wasn’t long ago when the bye week came with a sigh of relief for Saints fans. No loss this week! SunHerald.com give five reasons the Saints are winless.
Mike, Mike, Mike. Failed drug tests don’t help your day in court no matter what it is your up for.

It was pretty obvious that Coach McCarthy was trying to help Brett Favre get to the TD record this weekend as they were going to the line with an empty backfield on the goal line. It was also pretty awesome to watch. The pretty thing about the record tying TD was that it was to win the game. That made the whole thing all good. You know he was going to get tot he record this season but it would have taken away from the feeling had it been in a loss. The Packers are 3-0 folks. More records to be had. It’s fun to watch what COULD be Favre’s last season.
Donovan McNabb shouldn’t see as much pressure for being black this week after a monster game and the Eagles winning…but that doesn’t have anything to do with it.
I wonder if the suicide rate jumped in New Orleans last night. Not only is the team looking like a high dollar AINT’s team, Deuce could be out for the season. The crew didn’t make it any easier to watch the game with the
Donovan McNabb is feeling pressure. Not because he is the QB on an 0-2 team in Philly but because he is a black QB. They naturally undergo more pressure in the NFL. I don’t want to sound like I’m not sensitive to the situation but I don’t think Donovan McNabb has felt more pressure any given day in his career for being black than Joey Harrington has felt for being Joey Harrington.
“It’s nothing that I’m upset about,” McNabb said. “It’s something about being part of the NFL and communicating with others who have played in this league at the position. That’s just something that we feel we’re kind of measured by.
“It’s sad that it’s that way. It’s nothing that’s going to affect what we set out to do.”
Calvin Johnson is not paying attention. He is a first round pick for the Lions. He is a WR in his rookie season. He has 8 catches for 131 yards and a couple of TD’s in two gam
What if. What if Ronnie Brown lost his starting job to Jesse Chatman? Remember Chatman? The guy that some say has a weight problem that used to be the Michael Turner in San Diego backing up LT. According to Cam Cameron, there is a chance of it happening. Fire-up the fantasy waiver wires!
“The best running back will play.” Cameron said Brown is young in terms of carries, adding, “We have to give him a chance to develop.”
Those Falcons just can’t catch a break at QB. Most of you have heard about that Michael Vick thing. Fans and media type gave the Falcons hell for trading away Matt Schaub, especially after the Vickcapades. Now backup, and fan favorite, D.J. Shockley is out for the season. I’m starting to think that someone, I won’t mention any names, someone really HIGH up really, really, wants Joey Harrington to have a job.
So what are their options? They have been talking a trade with the Eagles for Kelly Holcomb. There is goi
With the Patriots WR corps so stacked, it’s crazy to think that Donte Stallworth could be cut. There are only so many spots to be filled and the bottom line is that those that produce in the preseason will be the ones that stay. Although Stallworth will get some slack for being injured, every game and snap counts in this race. Two tom Brady INT’s thrown in Friday’s game against the Titans were meant for Stallworth.
“I slipped on the first one and the second one Tom threw the ball where I was supposed to be and I wasn’t exactly where I was supposed to be,” Stallworth said. “There are no excuses. It’s just something where I have to learn the way Tom plays and understand the way this offense is supposed to be run.
“I’ve been practicing for a week now. It was good to get some of the rust off, but at the same time, as the days go on you want to start making fewer and fewer mistakes. And hopefully by the time you need to get t
The Cowboys topped the Colts in Wade Phillips first game on the sidelines for The Boys.
“I thought it was a pretty good first outing,” Phillips said. “It’s not a regular-season game, but it’s nice to come in and play well at home, which you need to establish, and not turn the ball over and not let them run the ball. So I think we did some things well. Hard work can pay off. Winning whatever kind of game is important.”
Calvin Johnson got on the field for the first time and made a couple good catches for 45 yards.
Sean Payton is keeping a close eye on the D-tackle position tonight. Kendrick Clancy is getting the nod to start over Hollis Thomas.
“It’s a combination of (Clancy) playing pretty well and Hollis needing to get his weight down,” Payton said. “When it’s hot like it is now, (Hollis) is not real productive and he understands that.”
To little too late. After passing on him in the draft when he was with the Texans, Charlie C
In what we think is a very cool move, the 49′ers will be wearing throwback jerseys in honor of Bill Walsh when they face off against the Cards in the season opener.
Elsewhere with the Niners, TE Vernon Davis is apparently a hot head who isn’t going to take crap from anyone on the field. That can be good until flags start flying. Coach Nolan is drawing a line for him…often.
“It means a lot to Vernon to make plays and be a good player. I don’t want to take that away from him,” Nolan said. “At the same time, I am always talking to him saying this is (going) too far, this isn’t.”
Apparently Davis got into a scuffle with Guard Larry Allen. I can see if it was a defender but what are you fighting about on the same side of the ball?
Something a lot of people may not remember is that Jon Kitna was the mentor to Carson Palmer when he came in to the league.
“I learned a lot. Not about playing quarterback, but about being a p
Vince Young is living up to his Wonderlic scores by punching a teammate in the helmet with his throwing hand. Despite the throwing hand thing, the leader of the team should not likely be throwing punches. The upside to it was that he was sticking up for his WR’s.
“My preference is not to see my quarterback throwing punches with his throwing hand,” Coach Jeff Fisher said with a slight smile.
Dante Culpepper has arrived in Raiders camp. He got some reps but spent more time in the classroom trying to catch up on the offense. This really is a good situation for the Raiders. If Culpepper doesn’t work out he should still serve the purpose of running the offense until Russell is signed and ready to go.
“Lane made the final decision, but I wanted it to happen,” Raiders managing general partner Al Davis said. “I like to take chances like that. I don’t know what the risk is. I don’t see any real risk.”
For now, Luke McCown
I know it’s how you take it in print but by reading this line I don’t know if all the Panthers staff are on the same page…
“I think everybody does a combination of man, zone and gap blocking and some lead blocking,” said new offensive line coach Dave Magazu. “I think it’s just, what are you going to major in? And we’re going to lean a little bit more on the zone stuff.”
Andrew Walter was the only QB on the Raiders roster at one point this offseason. Now you have Walter, Josh McCown, Dante Culpepper, and someday JaMarcus Russell.
Dante Culpepper has a one year deal with the Raiders. Hopefully it does more for his resume than it did for Aaron Brooks.
“He’ll be part of the competition to be the starting quarterback,” coach Lane Kiffin said of Culpepper. “We’ll give him the opportunity and see if he can take it and if he can’t, he’ll be a backup. “He said he’s not worried ab
All the talk in the offseason has been about DeAngelo Williams and how he will excel in the new zone blocking scheme. There is reason to believe that the current starting RB, DeShaun Foster may not do too bad himself with it.
Matt Leinart had an interview in the paper about football…no, really.
“I know the expectations are high and stuff,” he said Sunday after the Cardinals’ first practice of training camp, “but I just control what I do. I’m not worried about what other people are going to say to me. I’m worried about helping this football team. That’s my job.”
Eric Mangini is learning what it’s like to have a first round holdout in Darrelle Revis.
“Every day is critical for people to be here,” Eric Mangini said yesterday of the impact of Revis’ absence. “Every day, we’re putting things in, installing news defenses, working on situational defense. There’s a lot of really good teach
I was just thinking yesterday that we could see randy Moss play his most committed football season in years being on a legit contender. The Pats have 12 WR’s that are going to be fighting for 5-6 spots. Chad Jackson is already fighting for a roster spot.
Companies are pulling Vick merch left and right. Even the NFL Shop is taking his stuff of the website.
“Donruss, one of four major trading card companies, has decided to pull Vick’s card from any future 2007 releases, according to Beckett Media, which covers the collectibles industry.”
What this tells me is that there are going to be a flood of Michael Vick Ebay items. If he comes out of this unscathed and resurrects his career, those Don Russ cards that did make it to the public are going to become little cash pots tot he Ebay card sellers.
Tavaris Jackson get his own era in Minnesota and it starts now. Here we have the canned confidence quote from a WR.
“Just the balls he throws, veteran players
As Michael Vick makes his appearance in court, the Joey Harrington era is set to begin in Atlanta. Man I bet Joe Horn has to be pissed off.
Man…these guys can’t catch a break. Warrick Dunn is going to miss some time after surgery.
Michael Bush has signed and is ready to become the guy who would have been the running back of the future for the Raiders if it were not for the bum leg.
Wade Phillips was met with a standing ovation at the Alamo Dome as Cowboys camp opened.
“There’s not any training camps like this that I know of or that I’ve been in,” said Phillips, entering his 31st season in the NFL and with his seventh franchise. “This was probably the most and the most enthusiastic. It helps because your players practice better. When the fans are out there, they’re going to do more, so I think it’s a real plus for us.”
The Sun Herald has five questions going into the Saints camp concerning Robert Meachem, Brian You
This whole Vick getting busted thing is putting a spotlight on a “sport” that doesn’t want it.
Even if Vick dodges the Federal thing, he could still face local charges.
Marcus Spears is 20 lbs. lighter and liking this new Coach in town thang.
Another Cowboy note…will someone please get a grip on the Big D Grid Iron blog or just shut the damn thing down? The spam has been all over that thing for quite some time. (Warning…if you go to the link you will see what some call “bad words”).
Rumblings this week about just how secure Rudi Johnson’s job is after Marvin Lewis said he wants more yards per carry. This should put a little spotlight on Kenny Irons in camp.
The USA Today top 25 in the last 25 years has been getting alot of smack talk. Walter Payton comes in number 3. Who the hell can be #2 and #1?
The Saints already suck in the middle of the D-Line. Now Bryant Young has fractured his foot. Who will take his place y
David Steele of the Baltimoresun.com would like to see the story of the Colts skipping town in the middle of the night to Indy put to film. I would watch that. That must of been crazy to be a Colts fan in Baltimore in ‘84 to wake up one morning and your team is gone.
The Titans have sold out every game at LP Field since it opened in 1999. The home opener against the Colts in two minutes!
“We thank the fans for extending our sellout streak to 93 games,” said Don MacLachlan, Titans executive vice president of administration and facilities.
With Fakhir Brown’s suspension there is all of a sudden a race for a starting job in the Rams D-Backfield.
“It creates an opportunity for great competition at the other corner spot opposite Tye” Hill, the starter at left cornerback, coach Scott Linehan said Saturday from Los Angeles, where he was attending a reunion marking 70 years of Rams football.

Every year there is one guy that gets all the pub in the Supplemental Draft. This year the Ravens took that guy and gave up a fifth round pick next year.
“If you would tell us that we drafted Jared Gaither in the fifth round of the 2008 draft, we’d be doing handstands and cartwheels,” Ravens director of college scouting Eric DeCosta said. “We think we took an interesting step today.”
The Chargers made a pick as well, selecting Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver in the fourth round.
“We had the opportunity to get a good football player today, and we took it,” General Manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. “Paul Oliver is very competitive, aggressive, confident player. He’s not cautious about anything he does on the field. You know how we like depth. We’ll add Paul to the mix as a Charger and time will tell.”
Sad story continues. David Pollack is going to be sitting out yet another season with his serious neck injury. One thing
Dhani Jones knows that he is walking into a deep LB situation in New Orleans. Not deep in the sense of stacked with studs, just people that have out performed him so far in the NFL.
“They have Scott Fujita, Mark Simoneau, Scott Shanle and a host of linebackers that are coming in,” Jones said last week on the NFL Network. “I will provide the depth, but also will push those linebackers so that we can compete going into next season.”
Troy Brown is sticking around for a year in New England’s crowded WR corps.
Tom Brady is No. 9 on that USA Today top 25 of the last 25 years list.
Usually a team gets pumped for their top 5 pick right away. The Bears are getting pumped for Cedric Benson now.
CBSSportsline.com has put out the annual “Heads on the chopping block” for NFL coaches.

Jason Witten’s mother has been cashing in on another woman’s bank account since November, 2006.
Linebacker Dhani Jones says that he is signing with the New Orleans Saints.
“It was a difficult (decision), but at the same time we’re excited about going to New Orleans,” Jones said. “What Reggie Bush and Coach Sean Payton bring to the table, it’s going to be an exceptional year.”
“A man of interest” in the shooting of Bronco cornerback Darrent Williams has been transfered to federal custody on a probation violation charge.
Michael Vick is going international with missing his WR’s. The Falcons have signed Noriaki Kinoshita, a three year vet of NFL Europa. Apparently this is big news since it’s all over the headlines.
Jacoby Jones was once told by Nick Saban he was too small to make it in football. Now he has a chance to start at WR for Houston. He was a 5′7″ High School senior at the time.
Not exactly new news (typing this I wonder if the word “news” comes from “new”…hmmm….) but it’s being talked about again how the NFL is looking at 45 second max on video that will be allowed for news organizations to use at a time on websites. That, my friend, sucks!
Houston Chronicle’s John McClain has shown just how hard that is to cram a story into that time allotment in THIS VIDEO.
You know how people talk about when a professional sports star should realize he is a role model and should act like? They usually say this when the player screws up but Vince Young knows it now. It’s not exactly what he was talking about when discussing his ROY campaign but it’s what I thought of reading it.
“It’s my dedication,” he said. “I didn’t want to fail. A lot of people look up to me: My family. Fans. Kids. A lot of people in the world look up to me. Here I am in a whole other state. I didn&rsquo
The Rams are going to find themselves in quite the pinch when Marc Bulger’s contract comes up. The way the guy has played they are going to have a hard time convincing his agent he isn’t worth THAT much. Surly they will ask for way to much but it’s just going to be hard to deny giving him a big dollar contract. But they may have to deny it. Patty will tell you about it…
The Court shot down Bucs fan Gordon Johnston’s challenge of ending the pat downs when entering Raymond James Stadium. Johnston argued that the foreplay was an unreasonable search. The Court countered…with reason…that it is not within his constitutional rights to watch a football game. I found this funny because it really is something that he is choosing to attend. It’s not like it’s on his way into jury duty (where they may do it too).
“Considering Johnston’s ticket was only a revocable license to attend games, there is in the Court&rsq
